I hope not as well. I think the vet started insulin too soon. A diet change should have been tried first. If he’s going into remission you will soon know if the negative changes go away that he might have been diet controlled from the beginning. He will still be a diabetic bit one controlled by diet rather than insulin.
So should I stop insulin for awhile even if I see numbers over 100 again? Or what do you suggest?
Diet change alone was never presented as an option. His glucose was very high when he was first diagnosed. I am ashamed to admit that I didn’t recognize the warning signs (even thought looking back they are so obvious) for quite a while. I think he had untreated diabetes for well over a year.
He had all of the symptoms— excessive thirst, increased urination, incredibly sticky pee, increased appetite, weight gain, decreased grooming and dandruff, difficulty jumping up on things, I could go on and on. I will never forgive myself for not putting it all together sooner than I did.
I brought him to the vet for various symptoms I just mentioned over the year. However, my vet dismissed them all as part of the aging process. He never even tested blood. I believed him. I should’ve known better.
I was feeding both dry food and expensive wet food that I thought was healthy. Turns out, it had a RIDICULOUSLY high carb content. The lowest one I was feeding was 18%.
My recent concern is that he seems noticeably off on insulin lately. Almost like a shell of himself. He doesn’t do anything but sleep. However, I didn’t see any of that for the first month when I was treating a much higher dose.
Now, every time I give him insulin his entire personality disappears. I worry about how much he’s sleeping and how deeply he sleeps.
Of course, if it’s better for him in the long run and will save his life, I don’t want to stop.
I don’t trust my vet anymore. Actually, I don’t have a vet anymore! So I’m going to trust you and do whatever you suggest.
Thanks again for everything!
