9/10/22 Kaia head shaking

Question.. Kaia had DKA in Feb. She has been doing really well... but it seems every once in a while I catch her head bobbing (kinda like seizure activity) her Ketones seem to be ok. Her glucose has been hard to keep down. I'm wondering if its an ear infection? The last time I couldn't get it down she has an anal gland infection. Should I worry about DKA? Do her numbers look OK or are they still too high? Any advice is much appreciated!!

How often are you test doing for ketones? If you could post the results of the ketones test in the remarks column of the Ss that would be helpful.
Once a cat has had DKA you need to always keep that in mind and if he/she is not eating, vomiting, has an infection, has higher numbers, lethargic or is generally not herself always test for ketones.
I don’t use Prozinc so I will tag @FrostD to see what she thinks of the dose.
Are her teeth OK?
If you think she has an ear infection I would take her to the vet. And I would also try and video the head bobbing to show the vet.
 
Is she still on ProZinc?

I would go back down to 2U. Since she's getting the dry food you have to follow SLGS and take reductions when she goes below 90, and that happened a few times.

Remember increases are only 0.25U, and only when nadirs are above 150. Increasing by 0.5U when she was having nadirs in the 70s is dangerous.

Went back and read all the threads - wasn't clear why you're using a sliding scale.
 
So a sliding scale is not a good idea? I don't know what SLGS means. I was just trying to keep her from getting super high numbers ( over 500)
 
You are chopping the doses up , we don't base the dose in the pre ***** we base them in how low her BG is dropping , that's why you need to choose a dosing method, which will have to be
SLGS because you are feeding dry food also
Hold the dose for at least a week:
  • Unless your cat won’t eat or you suspect hypoglycemia
  • Unless your kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L). If kitty falls below 90 mg/dL (5 mmol/L) decrease the dose by 0.25 unit immediately.
After 1 week at a given dose perform a 12 hour curve, testing every 2 hours OR perform an 18 hour curve, testing every 3 hours. Note: Random spot checks are often helpful to "fill in the blanks" on kitty's spreadsheet. The goal is to learn how low the current dose is dropping kitty prior to making dose adjustments.
  • If nadirs are more than 150 mg/dl (8.3 mmol/L), increase the dose by 0.25 unit
  • If nadirs are between 90 (5 mmol/L) and 149 mg/dl (8.2 mmol/L), maintain the same dose
  • If nadirs are below 90 mg/dl (5mmol/L), decrease the dose by 0.25 unit
