I just got off the phone with the vet. Tarragon is doing ok this morning. He is being his normal picky self for breffis, so they are sending a tech to the store to get some Fancy Feast. Atta boy, make em work for ya!

They have started the regular insulin in his iv drip. His BG at 8 am was 216, so it has come down. They haven't bothered to check for ketones this morning since it takes so long to rid the body of them. I am going at lunch to see him. It sounds like they are still thinking one more night, but will have to play it by ear.

Hope everyone has a great Friday eve! Love you all!

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

What wonderful news this morning! So Tarragon doesn't want any of that icky expensive prescription vet food? Alright -- FF all the way! Hope he continues to improve and hopefully will be home tonight or at the latest tomorrow. I know how much you are missing him at night.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

No way on that expensive wd, md, jd, whateverd. That is not Tarragon's style, or lack thereof depending on who you talk to. The vet made me feel horrible Tuesday when I said he ate fancy feast. She gave me the big long spiel about how the prescription stuff is soooo much better, etc. I pulled the food list out of my purse and started asking her about the carbs in those. The subject changed suddenly. You can't make a cat eat what he doesn't want to. Believe me, I've tried. I wouldn't let him eat that stuff anyway. The vets obviously do not have cats at home.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

YAY Tarragon!!! Wishing you a speedy full recovery!! What a great report

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

For the experts out there - what is the link between pancreatitis and diabetes and even DKA? Is it possible that Tarragon has had a chronic form of pancreatitis thats gone under the radar and this was an acute flare up?

Melissa I really recommend reading about pancreatitis. I know from the FAF board not a lot of vets really know how to treat it. So just like diabetes and this board - arming yourself with info can only help. I linked to the pancreatitis board in yesterdays condo. Here it is just in case. Maybe you have experience with pancreatitis already though.

Yay- I'm so glad that progress is being made! Good for Tarragon- hey- if he's gonna eat, it should totally be what he wants!

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

Hey T.....I hear you are on the mend now.....I'm so sorry you've been feelin so sick but glad you are getting back to your old self. And I chuckled (yes beans, cats can chuckle) when I heard that you were ordering out for lunch...making the vet tech get you some really tasty stuff. Let me know when you are feelin better and I can bring ya some of my bean's Tena Tunatinis w/shrimp. Feel better T. ~ curry

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

We are sooooooooooo happy to hear this great news! And a vet thinks the prescription diets are BETTER than FF??? Have they read the ingredients of the Prescription Diets lately? G-A-R-B-A-G-E insofar as the kd, dm, cd, rd, etc. I do believe the ad has some merit for sick cats but.....

Attaboy Tarragon....keep them on their toes and come home soon!!!

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

Karrie - I did see your link yesterday and have been reading it today. There is a lot there to absorb. I have also submitted a request to join the group. Thank you for everything. I really appreciate it.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

continued prayers and hugs from me and Tray and civvie Percival

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Update from vet

I just got back from lunch. Luckily, the vet hospital is on my way home, so I stopped to check on Tarragon on my way home. He looks so much better. They were surprised that he started purring as soon as he saw me. We rocked for awhile and talked about the big party Attie is having this weekend and how he needs to get better so he can go. He lays like a baby and watches my face when I talk. Today he reached up and touched my chin, which is what he always does at home. Small progress I know, but you gotta look at the little things. After that, I ran home to put Charlie inside since it is going to be so hot (108) again today. He kept putting his head in my hands. DH is convinced he could smell Tarragon. I think he is right.

Thank you all again!! I can never express how much the support of all of you makes this a little bit better.

Hey guys! My momma told me about the big party this weekend so I am going to try really hard to get better. She laughed at me for making them go get FF. I told her it is the only kind I like and if they are going to do the things to me they have been they need to pay up. Get ready because I will be back soon. Miss you all. - Tarragon

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

Those links really help a lot and give me some more things to discuss with the vet this evening. Thank you both for those!

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

Maggie is doing the happy dance dancing_cat dancing_cat dancing_cat hearing the lunch report on your precious Tarragon. It's a lot of progress that he starts purring when he sees you and looks better, each step is getting better.

Tarragon, you want more FF. I have a whole cabinet of FF I either don't like or it spikes me. I'll sneak some in to you tonight. Yes, yuck with the prescription fuds. Love ya, Maggie

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

Such awesome news Melissa, I love how he food striked that nasty vet food....I don't blame ya for not eating it Tarragon! Plus way to make them work for their money  hopefully you'll have him back this weekend sometime so he can be in his own territory. I love that he listens to you when you rock him......so sweet.
Get better soon T, I miss you!!!!

One of the causes for FD, well, diabetes in general, is pancreatitis. Insulin is manufactured by the beta cells/Islets of Langerhans in the pancreas. If there is an inflammation or infection present in the pancreas, which also functions to produce digestive enzymes, the beta cells may be damaged or destroyed. If a sufficient number of these cells are effected, diabetes results. Because there is an inflammation/infection present, BG levels will rise. With many as yet undiagnosed cats, their behavior may be a bit "off" but there's not a reason to suspect FD. So now, there's an infection, not enough insulin because the pancreas isn't producing it in the amount necessary, and overall metabolism gets thrown out of whack. Because of the action of insulin, nutrition isn't getting into the cells, and stored fat is being metabolized. (This is in part, why so many cats lose weight with FD.) Once this happens, a state of ketosis develops. As metabolic balances are left unaddressed, the situation worsens and diabetic ketoacidosis results. At that point, electrolytes levels become problematic and can become life threatening. Once the situation is identified, IV fluids help to get rid of the ketone bodies and electrolyte balances are slowly titrated back to normal. Pain meds are given to help with the pancreatitis and in some cases, steroids and/or antibiotics are needed, although antibiotics are generally not needed unless there is a clear infection present. Liver support for some cats is helpful, as well. Once a cat is feeling this lousy, they often stop eating so hepatic lipidosis can be a complication so nutritional support may also be needed.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

That is really good information. I didn't know of the link before Tarragon. Thank you! I also wonder if that's why Hef was diagnosed diabetic and is completely fine and OTJ now. It has opened my eyes and I will have it on the back of my mind. When a cat is diagnosed diabetic - is it helpful to run a pancreatitis test? I am thinking about Hefner down the line. No one knows if he will be diabetic in the future or if it was a one time thing.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

That is great information. Thank you for condensing it for me. I am having a hard time retaining at the moment. A little frightening though. Our vet has never even talked about pancreatitis until now. I agree with Karrie. I wonder if it shouldn't be standard to test for it if a FD diagnosis is made.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

I am so happy to hear that Tarragon is getting better. I am thoroughly convinced that Morgaine developed diabetes because she was on Hill's R/D for weight loss. She ate no other food but that and became diabetic. Nasty food and I wish there were a way to get those inappropriate foods off the market. All we can do is educate people and vets if they will listen. My current vet pushes the prescription foods a lot but she knows enough to know FD requires low carb.

The good news is that Tarragon is feeling better! Makes my day!

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

Go Tarragon!! My best wishes that he will continue to feel better and better until he is his old self again. What an awesome cat.

just fyi, it's because you're under stress. when my mom broke her leg and was in a rehab place I was taking food to her (food issues) and my dad. it was like my dad developed dementia overnight - he simply could not remember a thing i told him. "this food is for your lunch, dad. this food is for mom." three seconds later he wouldn't remember what i'd just said and would ask me again. two minutes later he'd ask AGAIN! a nurse told me that when you are under stress, your body is flooded with cortisol (to react to the crisis) and it prevents you from taking in new information. in cave man days when you were running from the bear, it probably helped you out. now, when you need to take in new tech info to deal with the crisis, it's less than helpful.

so don't worry, it will pass as mr T gets better.

and wahoo on the paw touching your face. that is a sign of a kitty who is on the mend. we're all cheering for both of you.

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - Lunch Visit

Ahhhh Cortisol, how i've learned about thy cortisol in the past two months!
lol

It can do some serious things, especially with Fight or Flight like Julie said!

Hey Melissa, can you bottle some and send it to me??

Re: 9/1 Tarragon - evening

So a hunger strike is in process. Good news is that ketones areat "trace" tonight. Tomorrow he comes home.
They couldn't get a urine sample . I picked him up and knew he was FULL. 2 minutes later he peed all over the floor. "If you want that sample, bring a syringe." That's my boy!
