Still having trouble with the AM test. I did get one at +6. It was higher than the PMPS. I'm thinking maybe I need to start a new cartridge of Lantus.

For some reason, I can't open the condo from yesterday.

Hi Denise... is this better? viewtopic.php?f=9&t=23821

Have you had the same cartridge since the beginning? The manufacturer says it good for 28 days once it's opened but people here have gotten a little more time out of it...the amount of days varies though.
It's good to notate in the note section of the SS when you open a new cart so you have a quick reference.

How is Sidney today?
What food are you feeding right now and what is your feeding schedule?
How is the testing going today?

Just a few words here about testing while you are hopefully answering...
Many of us have a special place where we test. I use a table and approach Shadow from behind. I am able to hold a folded tissue under his ear and I use a lancet device to prick the ear. Once I get the blood into the meter, I fold over the tissue and apply a little pressure to stop the bleeding.
At first it is difficult but as you continue to do it, their ears "learn" to bleed.

Of course, I have a towel that he lies on and I get all the stuff ready before I start...the meter is off to my right with a test strip...and everything is ready to go. I think the beep of the meter actually signals that we are ready to begin...Pavlov's dogs....

I had both Raja & Shadow to test back in August of last year! I was going to my vet once a week at first before I found this forum. I realized from the reading material that the BGs are not a constant thing. The number is changing all day long and giving a dose of insulin without doing a test first to see what the BG numbers is, is like driving down the highway at 90 mph with a paper bag over my head!!! I realized that if I wanted my two to be safe with the insulin, I needed those numbers and the process was non-negotiable.
Somehow, I managed to learn and then managed to test them both so many times a day. It was like an assembly line!

It is important to test before each shot. AM/PM and at least one test at night...a before bed time check. Any other tests you can do throughout the day are great! The more data you have on your SS, the better you are able to see how insulin is affecting his BGs.

My vet prescribed 4 .0u for Shadow twice a day. Raja was prescribed 3.0u twice a day. I followed the advice and Raja got very sick on the 5th day. That was before I was home testing. Once I joined the forum, the people here looked at her numbers and suggested a much lower dose... 0.6u~~not even a full 1.0u!!! :o She might have died had I continued to give her the full 3.0u and not tested her!! She went OTJ (off the juice) 4 months later and she never went above that 0.6u dose but went down the dosing ladder that entire time! Shadow is a different story..he is my problem child. And yet, we started over here, following the Protocol. I was told to "Start Low and Go Slow" Shadow has never worked his way up to that high a dose since we have been here and is currently on his highest dose at 2.5u.
Many vets prescribe a higher starting dose it seems.

We when increase the dose, it is because the numbers we get on our SS warrant an increase and then we usually go up in increments of .25u at a time.

I hope you will get a chance to read the starred stickies at the top of the page if you have not already done so. This is a lot to take in at first, but we are here to answer all your questions....okay?

Thank you for trying. It still won't let me. It keeps telling me it doesn't exist. Oh well, if that's the only problem I have today, I'll consider myself lucky  .

I feed Sidney and my civie Bacall right before his morning insulin, about 8 am. They both get 1/2 FF. He usually finishes hers off. If he eats more than that, he just throws it back up. Since I haven't been home testing, they both have been getting 1/2 c of Purina Pro Plan Hairball at 8pm. She has long hair and is 18. This is the one food I've found where she doesn't leave me "presents" every morning. He gets a few crunchies during the day. He cries for them. They all have me trained very well. I do plan on going to all wet within the next week.

The testing went great this afternoon. I usually just sit in the middle of his bedroom floor with him, lay everything out, brush him, play with his ears and then test. In the mornings though, he will not get still and runs around his room wanting breakfast.

I know I'm not completely following everything, but I will. There have just been a few roadblocks along the way.

Yes, we all know about roadblocks.
One suggestion is to try testing in a different place. I never though my two would let me do this. But our kitties surprise us all the time. If you don't mind my saying so...i do think that the middle of the floor might not be the best place for him to get into a "routine". If you have a desk or a table that you could place a towel on and then put him on the towel. I kinda lean over Shadow's back and he stays lying down for me. But it takes practice. For both of you that is!
He will soon understand that he needs to give you a number before he eats. Many people find a nice treat that they give right after testing...a piece of boiled chicken or freeze-dried chicken broken into small pieces. The kitties love the treats and they learn very quickly. (I never got into giving mine treats but many people do and it really works!)

You will find that it is a tool that will help you so much. I can't say enough about how important it is to be able to test your kitty.

Have you read the STICKY: LANTUS & LEVEMIR - NEW TO THE GROUP? PLEASE READ... viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18139

It is very important. In particular, you should read the HYPO TOOLBOX section. Since you are on such a very high dose for Sidney, it is important that you have high carb canned food with lots of gravy. The gravy is given to bring up the numbers should he go low. Has your vet discussed HYPOS with you and told you what to do in the case of lower numbers? You might read that entire sticky and come back if you have any questions.
You can find a list of canned foods here on Janet & Binky's food chart... http://binkyspage.tripod.com/canfood.html
find one that has 18-20% carbs and keep some separately to use in case you need them, ok? And Karo syrup too...
