9/1 Pearl OTJ Trial Day 10 PMBG 95

Good morning!

Yesterday we had a poop disaster, and Pearl stopped eating. Her PM cycle was all kinds of wonky (due to no food, some 11% Gerber, stress from primary care giver (me), possible pancreatitis). \

Today started off ok - she slept with me, and she DID eat at AM -3, so her AMBG is very nice. Makes me wonder if there is indeed a pancreatitis or not - in any case, I am treating it as such.

But, false confidence. Since -3, she still won't self-feed and won't let me assist feed any longer. So, I went to her vet to get more A/D (11% carb ugh but she will eat it in a pinch if I need her to). I really don't know how far out-of-the-woods we are today.

I also "by chance" checked her Wellness Beef/Lamb/Venison on Amazon. As many of you know, this is Pearl's food of choice (3%) and she does very well on it. The majority of her FD journey has been on this food, but then it stopped being produced and I haven't found it for MONTHS. (Initially transitioning her from that food to her current "CM FOOD" was some challenging - even though the CM FOOD is lower carb, it results in higher BG for her). Well....long story short. I called Wellness again today, they told me they have now decided to halt production on the 3oz cans (as well as the planned halt on the 5.5oz cans), and that they will not be producing anymore - no hope for future, which until now they had insisted the 3oz cans would resume production. They also said they never resumed producing it during COVID.

But.....Amazon has some now (after months of finding this food nowhere in the entire US including Amazon). The only thing I can think of is the Amazon found a stash somewhere in their ware house. So I am in process of buying the entire lot (I did call amazon and confirm they DO have the food). So, 45+ cases and credit card debt....here we go.

I did just now open one of the 2 remaining Wellness cans I have (saving for a rainy day emergency - which funny enough, today is both). Pearl GOBBLED up her food. So, it's not that she won't eat anything, which was good to see.

I hope her body acclimates back to the 3% Wellness very well and it doesn't mess with her remission. This whole situation has shown me though that she does have a STRONG shot of being and staying in remission, she has had a lot of drama that can tinker with a BG during her OTJ trial, from Pred days to possible Pancreatitis to changing foods several times - and she still comes back down to Green.

If she makes it on this OTJ trial, believe it or not her celebration day will be her 16th birthday.

Surf safely today kitties.

I have heard of cats that only eat one food going on a hunger strike. It’s why I vowed to never feed just one. Pearl has carried it to an extreme. I hope that is all it is. I wonder what is going on with Wellness. 3% should not cause her to spike. :bighug:

45 cases!
Well at least getting her food in the future is one less thing you'll have to worry about!
Very interesting she gobbled it up. What is her normal food %?

I hope that is all it is. I HAVE started going into the office for longer hours and more days, I am hoping she is just upset about that somehow.

The Wellness won't mess her up - historically. But going back to the Wellness after being off of it - I don't know if that will mess with her. In her unregulated FD days, she couldn't go over 0% without a food spike early on. So her Wellness was actually the food I used to keep her afloat and from going below 50! As she became more regulated, she was able to tolerate a little more carbs, and the Wellness became really excellent for her. It is a great hydration level for her too - no constipation worries on it. So I am hopeful the transition back to that food goes ok.

Her current "CM FOOD" is only 0.62% carbs, but there must be an ingredient in there she reacts to mildly with the IBD because it always keeps her BG about 10 point higher than the Wellness used to.

I hope I am making sense today!

LOL I don't know if they have 45 cases. After about 25 the ship dates started stretching waaaaay out. So I may have already maxed out on what they have in their warehouses.

So Pearl is very carb sensitive. When she was first diagnosed with FD she could only eat 0% food wihtout a huge BG spike. Her Wellness 3% is what I used in place of a MC food. Over time, she was able to tolerate more carbs as she became more regulated and the Wellness was very good for her. Interestingly better than the current CM FOOD which I hypothesize has an ingredient in it that causes her BG to ride a little higher. Does this make sense? My brain is flying today.

Oh you're making complete sense :)
That's crazy sensitive. I think I've read that they can be very carb sensitive early on. Surely 2.5% more now won't cause much of a spike. But I can see how that's cause for stress since you're trying to run a tight ship, with all these variables liable to mess up remission.

LOL when we first started, I didn't even know the Wellness was only 3% carb. I thought it was 13% (un-updated Dr. Pierson spreadsheet for this particular food). The first time Pearl started going below 50, @JaxBenji commented on her condo and somehow she knew the true carb percent (perhaps from using it before herself?) so it was really fortuitous that I had been using it in place of a MC and afterwards found out how LC it really was - I mean, I would never had done that had I known it was a LC food. So that is how we found out that Pearl was uber-carb sensitive! Cool, by-chance story :)

Margaret, I'm giving you an Awesome Mama award! You deserve it dear lady:bighug:
Ms. Pearl is about to be 16, like my gal, Tina. I hope 16 will be sweet, like it should be! Your post yesterday had me both laughing (great story telling) and crying (you worrying about some loss connection with Pearl's BFF). I pray all will settle down soon, and that Pearl will gift you with a nice remission. Sending all kinds of good wishes . . .

That is fascinating. Susanne was probably, "ummm, that's not MC!!!" LOL.

Thanks so much, Jan! I'm getting pics ready to send to @Camille and Cyclone today for Pearl's OTJ party - I am trying to choose some sentimental ones with BFF Whisper and some really funny ones - Pearl is a comical cat. I'm just moving forward in faith (trying) that we are going to get to OTJ, and on her birthday. I think that would be so neat. Last year her birthday was the day her worst "trial" ever started losing BFF, and health-wise with so many compliations - Pancreatitis, Peritonitis, etc and eventually FD. It would I think be very meaningful to celebrate the end of her "trial" on the same day :D :D :D

I sure hope you've cracked the case open and that Pearl is done with pooping and onto eating properly again. Happy day 10! So close. I like that you would have a double celebration.

I hope Pearl feels better and continues to eat for you. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Thank you so much! She has had some improvement today, but I still don't know what has set her off so badly. Historically, this doesn't happen much at all and when it does there is a medical reason. Who knows, maybe it all happened so I could find her Wellness 3% food and buy the Amazon stock out? I am looking for wisdom to have answers on her situation!

Oh my gosh. Don't make me cry now.

Oh wow, Margaret. You have been through the ringer!! I hope you can get that Wellness food soon... and that it gives you some time to find another food that Pearl really likes! I hope she will eat for your in the meantime. It will be so special if the has her OTJ celebration on her 16th birthday! That is so sad about Whisper. I am sorry. And they were really close. Keep on keepin' on, girl! You ROCK! (you seriously do!)

You are an amazing and dedicated Mama.... we started this journey at almost the same time and I have learned lots from you two. I am so happy Pearl is doing so well. She wouldn't have made it this far without you.
Missy and I are still going strong... had a few setbacks the last while but doing my best to get her back on track. I hope everything works out with the food you found.... 45 cases is a lot... I would have done the same thing LOL! Good job my friend!
