Fur shot last PM - so frustrating!!! Little stinker launched away as I was hitting the plunger. Old bandaids. GRRRRR! We were doing so nicely!

He woofed all his food and would have eaten more, but I kept him to his schedule and didn't add anything. I figured I didn't want to add insult (more glucose) to injury, even if that leaves him pretty hungry this morning. Is that a bad assumption or bad thing to do? Should I feed his additional hunger? He will get more around +5 today so I'll wait.

Sorry about the furshot.
They really stink.

I myself wouldn't hold back on the food, it's not like you are keeping him from earning a reducie today.
It also depends on when he ate last before the shot.
Hungry cats aren't happy cats.

When I postponed food before diabetes, mine would go sulk and hide.
But now with diabetes, I try to give food often enough so that she isn't suddenly hungry right in
the times I want her to go a while without, like that evening pre-shot test. She isn't able to make
it if I don't give her some at +7.

Okay, that makes sense. I'll try that. We have the feeder programmed to give some food at +3, I'll probably give some more at +5. Sometimes he doesn't eat what we put out by hand until much later, sometimes up to pre-shoot, which I didn't like. Which is why I got the feeder. But that means he better figure out that if he doesn't at the +3 and it advances to the +5 meal, that the +3 food is Gone Forever! :o

Go storage shed! Leo's +5 is 214... a shocker! I was hoping for pinks, but a nice solid yellow! Yay for Leo! Mommy's boy! I'll aim for a +10 or +11 tonight.

Fur shots are so frustrating. It looks like Leo is doing okay now, but you may see higher numbers later because his shed has to refill. Hope you have a good Saturday.

Please get an early test. Leo's been surfing but his numbers are heading down. I figure getting the early test so you know where the numbers are heading will keep you prepared.

As for feeding Leo as much as he wants and when he wants food, you may want to look at Jill's post on feeding.

Wendy - yes ... a blue surf in progress! I'm on guard because he was nearly black this morning and zoomed to blue. Big dips like that have tickled his liver, so I'm ready for anything. I think he'll be lower at his nadir, but he should be restocking the shed so who knows. I don't know him well enough yet.

Sienne - yes, if his numbers are ever like this (well, until I get comfortable with how he reacts) I will test early on preshot values like this. I just tested and +2 is 161. I'll be up at +5 to retest. I cut back on his feeding as advised a few days ago, and just started using a feeder to spread the food out a little. Before the diagnoses, he would eat frantically, and it's like he KNEW food wasn't working but he was compelled to keep chewing anyway. So no, I won't put that much food out. I haven't read the entire post you referenced yet, but I will. Thank you for the reference.

He gets 3/4 can at shot time (it was previously 1 can), and I had been giving 2/3 can in frozen chunks at the same time. That would help spread out his food as it thawed. He would eat them much later as they thawed, but sometimes not until +9 or so. I don't think he liked the texture or something after the freezing. So I tried giving the second meal at room temperature at different times, which he seems to eat (or at least sample) as I put down. That seems to work better than the frozen. So now I'm taking the second meal (2/3 can) and making it closer to 3/4 (easier to measure!) and splitting it into 2 smaller feedings at +3 and +6. It's in the feeder now and not frozen anymore = PetSafe Feeder. The feeder has 5 compartments in a circle and it rotates on a timer. I have the feeder rotate the +6 meal away at +9 so if he didn't finish it, he doesn't get to graze before his AM reading. So that should shift his hunger to the start of the cycle so the pre-shot tests are more "fasting" values. I hope that explanation made sense!

So it would be like this ...
PM 3/4 can by hand
+3 3/8 can fed automatically
+6 3/8 can fed automatically (but rotates any remaining +3 food away)
+9 no food (rotates any remaining +6 food away)

The only drawback is if he gets lazy and doesn't eat either meal, it will go away and not be available to him later. I'll be checking to see if this happens.

Thanks, Melissa - you too! I see you are in OK, you're probably getting some Zzzz now too.

Leo is *shockingly* very stable in the blues ... I was waiting for a nadir that would keep me up in the wee hours, but happily I can go back to sleep! Mommy loves you Leo!
