Good morning,

AMPS 231

Butch was yellow with some blue last night. Once again, Butch was picky with his AMPS meal, so he finally settled for FF 4% 3/4 can and finished the 1/4 at +1.5

Hopefully today he will gently slide into the blue and greens and ease up on the high bounces

Hope everyone has a wonderful Sunday and safe surfing!:cat:

Hope Butch slides down today, Madeline. And I hope he’s willing to eat for you at dinner time :bighug::bighug:

Hi Madeline, just popped in and thought I’d offer a few thoughts. I tend to find that both my diabetic cat, Maverick and my civvie (not diabetic) will eat only about 1/2 can of FF at the am/pm meals. If I understand your notes (good job keeping track of feedings ;)) it looks like you are trying for closer to a full 3 oz can at each meal? Since Lantus tends to onset for most cats around +2, I would say it’s not as much a concern if he’s only interested in 1/2 a can at mealtimes (which is quite a good portion), since if you feed some small snacks at +1,+ 2 and +3 that will offer fresh carbs on board as the insulin onsets. I’m not sure if you’ve seen this post, but you may find it helpful, since I see that Butch is a bit of a bouncer. Using Food to Manipulate the Curve

Thank you, Staci!:bighug::bighug:
Butch stood flat in the low yellows with a bounce into the pinks:mad:
He was still driving me nuts tonight with his PM meal, but I am going to try breaking it up like Christie suggested:)

Hi Christie. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the post. I appreciate it very much! :bighug::bighug:
I am happy to know that 1/2 can at mealtimes is a good portion because l was trying for full 3 oz can at each meal. I will break it up +1, +2 and +3.
Butch does tend to be picky with his flavors and I need to change them. I sometimes have to crumble Purebites dried freeze chicken or turkey on top of his food.
Yes, Butch is definitely a bit of a bouncer. If Butch has a high preshot (300s), would I still feed at the +1 (if number is still in the 300s)?

I do that, too. I take her meal and pull out 4 ounces and divide that up for a snack at +1,2,3.
So she’s getting some of her “meal” later as the insulin kicks in each cycle. My hope is that the carbs help to soften the blow of the onset and hopefully lessen her dive.
I use the automatic feeder for each of these feedings so I have her used to using the feeder. (That way if ever I need her to use the feeder it’s something she’s accustomed to eating from).

I know the picky eaters’ scenario well, I have a smorgasbord of different foods in my pantry that could rival a small pet supply store :p.

Yes, that’s right. The idea is to offer snacks at the first part of the cycle to help flatten the curve a little, since bounces can happen when kitties drop too quickly as well as when they get to lower numbers they aren’t as used to.

Hi Christie. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the post. I appreciate it very much! :bighug::bighug:

You are very welcome :):bighug:

Good morning, Staci. Thank you so much for sharing. I appreciate it! :bighug::bighug:
I am usually home for the +1, +2, +3, but it is a good idea to get him use to the automatic feeder. I do have one, but it has two compartments. I am going to try this with Butch. I feed 3 oz can so I will divide that up.

Good idea. I use it when I’m home or go out. Every day. I just thought I’d train her instead of wanting me to hand it to her.
I have a Cat Mate C500 with 5 spaces. And it has cooler freezer packs with it that I use.

By the way I made an error in my post earlier. I pull out 4 tbsp of feed and divide that between 3 snacks at +1,2,3. :banghead:
