And the fun begins......

Timing is a funny, funny thing. Right after Boo was diagnosed at the beginning of August, I had a 3 week break from work - the timing could not have been better in getting adjusted to the diagnosis, figuring things out, etc. Plus one for us..... Score: Jessica & Boo Radley 1, Diabetes 0.....

I had to go back to work this week. Boo's number have been consistent.....boringly, 200's consistent. Today is the first official day that neither my husband or I were home to test. We've known this has been coming, so we've been working with a "sitter" to train her on what to do, etc. We've practiced time and time again, role played scenarios - everything.

Sure enough....my consistent Boo throws her a 99 at 9AM after being almost 300 3 hours earlier. 99...no big deal, big drop, something to watch, but no big deal right?

She's panicked already I can tell, so I try to reassure her that we're in great shape and that we'll just test again in about 15-20 minutes (keep in mind, I'm in a hospital, critical care, trying to be available to my sitter and not miss a beat at work).

20 minutes passes, no numbers, 30 minutes, no numbers, 45 minutes, no numbers. When I finally do get a hold of her 1 hour later, she's sobbing...she can't get another stick, she's tried countless times, she's given him the whole Tupperware of chicken breast treats trying (close to a pound of chicken!!!!) and he's bitten her twice already. Add to the cluster... in less than 10 minutes, I have to go into a procedure.

So...in the end, I surrendered to the circumstances and advised her to go ahead and slowly feed some HC through the morning since testing was out of the realm of possibility until I got home. We'll never know if today was "our day" to take the first reduction, but Boo's safe and other than a petrified sitter....no harm done.

Plus one for diabetes....Score: Jessica & Boo Radley 1, Diabetes 1.....Game on!!!! grr_red grr_red grr_red grr_red

Hi, wow that was quite a drop to 99! Your poor petsitter. I can understand if she's new to it all and to see that drop. Boo Radley got a whole pound of chicken treats out of torturing the ps. I'm trying not to laugh. There is always tomorrow. That was the best thing with the hc since she was having a hard time with getting a test. Hope tomorrow will be easier on her.

Oh, Jessica.........I'm sorry, and I shouldn't laugh.....but my goodness, that story was really funny! Gotta admire your petsitters attitude....she tried and Boo got lots of chicken. :o :-D

I hope things go more smoothly tomorrow.

It really is funny I know....or at least I can say that now....;-) ....I'm not sure who was more on edge when it was all going down. I wanted to help her sooo much and not being able to...ouch!

As you both have said, tomorrow's another day and heck...we always have tonight

those are the episodes that suck to live through but make the funniest stories afterwards! glad you all survived it. boo was making a very personal statement about being left behind with a petsitter all day! and he got a whole lotta chicken out of his statement!

AND you get to do it all again tomorrow! i sure hope it's better! if the petsitter is desperate, there's always burrito-wrapping him. there are youtubes on how to do it - we had to wrap punkin for about 2 weeks before he gave up and let us test him.

I can completely relate. Gabby won't let anyone except me test her.

Ummm.... By the way, are you familiar with positive reinforcement. I suspect Boo Radley is going to keep up the antics if there's chicken involved. You better inform your petsitter that bribery = positive reinforcement and she just gave your cat a lot of positive reinforcement for not getting tested.

I know we all do it differently. I used to give Morgaine a treat even if i didn't get a test out of her but I have now learned to not do that. She only gets her treats or her meal if I get that test. She doesn't always want to cooperate but I just wait it out with her and she gives in. Food is her great motivator. I doubt, at this time, that she would let anyone else test her though so that is a big factor in this situation.

Are you kidding???? I showed Boo the scoreboard as soon as I got home.....he said he was back on board!! Tomorrow he writes an apology to sweet Abby the pet sitter

Oh Jessica...this must be the week all good kitties fight back... Stella is fighting her shots (not the tests) something must be in the air....

Sorry you don't know whether you should reduce...but it will be very apparent in the next day or two I am sure. Good luck to the sitter!

PS. I am with the others... no test... no treats! ;-)
