AMPS - 495
+7 - 386
PMPS - 382

Was going to get a +6 instead, but time slipped past me a bit, whoops! And I got a call from the vet today with the curve. She mentioned concerns and whatnot, and that she may want to switch back to humulin N. Wasn't happy about that. Especially over 1 curve, and with all the stuff that was going around(getting back on schedule and noted dose increase). Hoping Tip will give better numbers for the next curve just so we don't switch back to the old insulin.

As for the food question, I'm wondering if my feeding schedule isn't working well for her. It's back on to AMPS, +6, PMPS, +4.5. Should I try to just do AMPS, PMPS and see what she does? I know multiple meals throughout the day are good for most diabetic cats, but I also know that food increases bG. So I'm wondering if that's maybe part of what's contributing to keeping her numbers high. I'm thinking of either tomorrow or the day after, giving her her breakfast, and then doing a curve, no snack, and see how that changes the PMPS.

Re: 8/9 - Tip - AMPS(495), +7(386);Call from vet, food quest

When Gabby was first diagnosed, she was quite ill and hospitalized. The internal medicine/ER vet started Gabby on Humulin N. After about a month, between my reading and with my vet's agreement if not urging, we switched to Lantus. My vet's comment was that Humulin N is a good insulin for dogs but nowhere near as good for cats. (I use a feline only specialty practice.) N may work for some cats. It does not have Lantus' duration and it's quite harsh. It causes fast drops in BG numbers. There are several cats here who have been switched off of N and done remarkably well. Take a look at Jasper's SS for an example. I suspect your vet is more comfortable with N. I would not use that as a basis for switching back to N especially since it didn't seem to be working all that well.

Tip has not been on Lantus for even a month. There's just not enough time to evaluate how well Lantus is working. In addition, you were beginning to see some response to N at over 3.0u. I would suspect that you will need to have your Lantus dose closer to that range before you see movement.

I would suggest feeding before nadir. If you are feeding at +6, there may be less insulin available to offset the effect of food.

I agree, when Tip was on humulin N, she'd see some pretty big drops on it. As much as 200 points at one time I think. It made me pretty nervous to see her drop so much. So I definitely don't want to switch back. I'm inclined to agree that it's probably what she's used to. Last time I was there, she asked me a bunch of questions on how expensive it was, if it's working, if it comes in a vial, how much was in the vial, etc. and today said she'd discuss it with another vet there, as that one uses Lantus in her patients more often.

On to food, about how much earlier than nadir would you suggest?
