Racci finally pooped this morning around 9:30 after not going at all yesterday! Her bg came down overnight and her bottom looks a little better. She ate 2 breakfasts early this morning but didn't eat much of her breakfast with her shot. She also let me brush her this morning without as much fuss as usual. I caught her lying in her litter pan again though which is not a good sign. I'm getting mixed signals from her so it's hard to say if she's doing well or not today.

I have the house cleaners due any minute so have to go. Will ttyl.

Hi Jane! Happy Fursday to you too! Yay, is right! I was glad to see the poo, the better looking butt and the lower bg = all signs that she feels better! Since she's been hiding from the cleaning women all day, I don't know how she's doing now. I'm going to have to go get her out of the closet for another test soon. I got her to eat a little in spite of them being here last test by letting her eat in the closet. :lol: I hope she's still nice and green and feeling better.

Is it possible that the kind of litter has anything to do with her butt sores? I was reading the litter discussion in punkin's condo and I wondered about that. Yay for poo! Detective Poo is always on the lookout. :lol:

Hi Liz,

I suppose anything is possible. I've thought about that and was going to try another one of the natural litters that didn't clump or powder. I just need to get out to the store and see which looks most appropriate and is still affordable. The pine is all natural with no additives and I keep it really clean scooping every time she uses it so I don't think it's the problem but I need to try just in case. Thanks. I'm just afraid to get another clumping litter after our last experience with it. I wound up cutting and scrubbing and brushing those poor little legs and feet for half an hour with her screaming and limping with it all stuck on her and in her toes.

Thanks for your concern about Gabby. On occasion, she'll throw me a high number like that. She's not a human food junkie so there wasn't any contraband. it's possible there was a fur shot but I just think it was random because she could.

Liz, Does Sweet Wheat clump or get powdery? With her asthma, powdery litters are a problem too.

Also, I'm wondering if the corn cobs or wheat are counterindicated for Racci because when I asked the vet if I could use cornsilk for powder on Racci she said not to use food products because of this type of infection. I'll have to ask her about those litters before I get them. The one I was thinking of getting was the newsprint. Have you ever tried that?

What a lovely day for Racci! And poop finslly :-D I'm glad her bum is better and hope she will eat and feel better. Poor sweetie!

Hi Sienne,

I'm glad it turned out to be just Gabby being a cat. I got a little worried when I saw that high number. I've seen her pink but never higher than that.

Gabby doesn't like people food? Racci always wants to smell or taste everything. She usually doesn't eat it but always wants to check it out. She gets mad if I don't have cream cheese with my breakfast because that's her favorite human food. I share it with her by putting it on my finger when eating a bagel or toast for breakfast every day.

She seems to be feeling a lot better tonight. She's cheerful and ate well. She's still holding back on pooping. She's used to going 2x a day and didn't go at all yesterday and only once today so far. When I look at her bottom though it doesn't look as bad. By tomorrow the Orbax should really start helping. It will be the 3rd day. Thanks for asking.

Hi Melanie

FWIW, when one of our cat needs to be kept inside for a while (recovering from a dental or other surgery, etc.), we use just normal soil in the LB, since that's of course what they're used to (because they normally go outside). I wonder if Racci would try that? It hardly clumps (though wetness does draw little, slightly firmer bits of soil together), it doesn't flake or powder, and it's untreated by chemicals. Is there a nursery near you somewhere, where you could ask about their soil? The nurseries here sell it in variously sized bags. It actually smells really nice, too, like a forest floor after the rain, earthy. Depending on where the LBs are in your house, you may find you need to put newspaper underneath them, in case Racci likes to dig/cover quite vigorously.

I realize Racci is not an outside-cat (right?) and so wouldn't be "used to" digging in soil like our cats are, but I thought it might be worth a shot anyway.

Hi Jane,

That's an interesting idea. I never thought of doing that. I used soil for my ex-feral cat, Midnight when trying to train him in the beginning but never thought of trying it with Racci. He was murder to lb train. Had never used one before and was an adult. Doesn't it make the floors dirty? It would probably make a mess out of Racci too. Her white fur would be all dirty especially if she wet it. It would probably be healthy though. Karre is black so you don't see it but Racci would get really dirty. Midnight was black like Karre and looked just like him in fact. Racci is pretty easy going about litter. She doesn't usually complain if it's different.

I garden so I'm familiar with the soils. I could get a good grade organic soil. They're a beautiful texture. I'm sure she would love it. Too much I think. :lol: I catch her lying down in her litter sometimes now. I bet she would do the same with that. :-D She does like to dig.

Thanks for the idea! Good thinking but I don't think it would work with Racci or my blond wood floors. I also wouldn't want dirt in her infection. I've been thinking of trying the newsprint litter. Have you eer tried that?

Good points you're making there, Melanie. Though Luca (mostly white) and Henry (milky ginger and white) both dig outside, even in the rain, and haven't ever been dirty. Goodness knows how they do that!
I hear you about dirt coming into contact with the infection, of course, and about the lying down in the soil, and the light-coloured floors. (Could you just put a soil-filled LB in a tiled bathroom or other tiled area, to see if it helped, and to keep the mess to a minimum?

We've never tried newsprint litter ourselves, but our local animal shelter use it a lot and most cats there seem to like it.

Actually, my Calli (ga) never looked dirty either and she had the same colors as Racci (her mom). She was just a good cleaner. Your light kits are probably good cleaners also. Racci is spoiled because she grew up with Calli cleaning her all her life so never had to do it herself! Now that Calli is no longer with us, she still only cleans the spots she can easily reach and it's complicated by her diabetic neuritis and arthritis so I have to do it and she doesn't like it from me or the brushing afterwards.

The only tiles I have are downstairs on the entry level and on the lowest level and Racci has a hard time with stairs. I have her box in my bathroom now but it's also blond wood. The people I bought the house from did the whole house in it except a few entry rooms that are tiled and bedrooms that are carpeted in light beige. Since it was in good shape I didn't change it. I could probably throw an old sheet over the carpet in the guest room to try it but I still don't want dirt getting in her infections.
