AMPS 276

He's really not liking the Royal Canin food that I bought for him at the vet Monday. Kind of a good thing because it was $100 for 24 cans and I can't afford that at all. He won't eat the food unless I put Fancy Feast on it.

Going to get the Instinct rabbit flavor when I get paid on the 20th, more affordable. Hoping he will like that kind!

Does anyone have any suggestions on a rabbit or another "unusual" meat wet food that's low in carbs but affordable, and has NO fish? I went by the advice from last week of getting the Fancy Feast flavors without any fish in them. I am thinking that the scabs and the throwing up are due to fish allergy, even though I have given him fish flavor food before. But I am praying that's all it is. The vet told me to put him back on flea meds, even though I don't think its fleas. I have to wait until the 23rd of this month to put another round on him, so until then, I am going to give him his usual every Saturday oatmeal bath, it seems to be working a little bit regarding his scabs. He is still puking, but since Monday, hes only puking usually during the night, and its not all hairball and mush, sometimes its liquid, sometimes its mushy hairball, but that seems to be getting a tad bit better! His scabs are healing slowly, and I am not noticing any big new ones since getting him off anything fish flavor, so within the last couple days. But he's limping on one leg; I am thinking due to the scabs? Scared that it could be feline diabetic neuropathy...God I hope not, Bubbas doesn't need any new problems.

Also, I am doing some research and saw that Purina Beyond Grain Free has a duck and sweet potato flavor, the carbs are low...and the price is reasonable, is it ok for a diabetic cat to have sweet potato? Also, I keep switching Bubbas' food, trying to find the best food for the best cost and I keep finding better and better, is that not good? And could that be a reason for throwing up?

Hi Katrina, any food change should be done slowly as to avoid intestinal upset.
I know Koha https://kohapet.com/collections/shop-all-cat has limited ingredient foods. I think that some of the Tiki Cat foods (After Dark) may be limited ingredient. You might also want to look at Dr. Elsey Clean Protein https://www.drelseys.com/product-types/food/
You may also want to check at a local mom and pop pet store around you if there's one. Stores like that usually are more helpful and carry single cans so you can try them out.
You could always make your own food. @Hendrick Cuddleclaw started making food for his clan.
I would strongly suggest that you focus on finding a food that Bubbas will eat without throwing up and work his insulin needs around it.

I love making food for the kits. I use E-Z Complete powder and primarily buy pork loin, chicken breast, turkey thighs and chicken thighs. It gets pretty expensive but I am feeding 7 cats daily.

for just Bubbas, it would probably be cheaper than many of the expensive special diet foods. One bag of E-Z Complete powder (large size) is $59.95 and that makes around 260 servings. Then you would have to buy meat to cook or use raw like I do.

Thank you for the advice!!! Yeah, I don’t switch foods slowly like I know I should due to me only being able to afford exactly what I need every two week, than when I get paid again I have to spend money on just exactly the cans I need for him for the next two weeks, so I don’t have money to get extra cans of the original food to be able to transition him into the new food for a couple days. But it I switch again, I will do that! I’m back to given him fancy feast, the non fish flavors with no fish at all in it whatsoever. Which seems to be going good. And yes I have been thinking about making him food myself! I need to do some more research as the only thing holding me back is being afraid I make something he can’t have or put something in the food cats can’t have, and I’m screwed on food so I just wasted all the time and energy into making it lol

Thank you! I will definitely have to do a lot of research before I start making my own, but I’m definitely interested in doing it!!!
