Autumn and Maxwell are going to camp this weekend. The local hospital runs a summer camp for kids with diabetes and have asked me to bring the cats and give a presentation on testing and shooting. They're even making both cats a camp tshirt. Now getting them to wear them might be the trick. Cassanova doesn't get to go because he won't wear his harness and string, bad kitty no summer camp for you.

CAMP!!! That's hilarious!!! .. yet so smart!

My BF tried to put a santa suit on Bing this winter - really bad idea

Go Autumn and Maxwell!!!

Ya I'm pretty sure the tshirts are gonna be a no go but hoping they will tolerate them long enough for a camp picture. I've taken Maxwell before when they've had really scared newly dxed kids which is how they knew to call me. Plus it worked out that this weekend I'll also have my Dr's sugar dog so Solomon will also be going..the kids should love him as he's a big plush Golden.

I'm jazzed because the kids love the critters and the local paper is covering our presentation as well as my rescue will be bringing 4 adoptable Sugarcats for a meet and greet. Would love to see extra sweet kitties go home with extra sweet kids.

We did this with the rescue a couple years ago with some diabetic seniors and placed all the diabetic animals.

How did you train the cats to accept the harness, Mel? I am wanting to do that with Lizzy, but dont know what age to start introducing it?? Cant imagine finding one small enough for her now, and it wouldnt fit for long anyway.

Re: 8/8 Autumn amps-203, Cassanova amps-143

Maxwell came trained. But for everyone else I start with just letting them wear the harness around the house. Once they except that attach the leash and let them drag it around for awhile. Now no one actually walks on a leash except Maxwell. Its more you follow them around. With Lizzy do it like testing training. Put harness on ...treat. check for a toy breed puppy harness that's what I use for Arabella and Mariposa. They're tiny.

Mel- that diabetes summer camp sounds like a wonderful idea, for kids and kitties both! How cool is that? :thumbup

I've only had my "inherited" diabetic cat, Alice, for a little more than a week, but I'm pretty sure she would fall in the "no camp for you!" group!

Hi all,

It doesn't take long to train a cat to wear a harness and a leash. I was going to fly a diabetic to a new home, and I had about 10 days to adapt Oscar to the harness and leash so I could take him thru security.

Like Mel said, put the harness on unbuckled, then buckled, then try the leash. Lots of treats and sometimes lots of noise. Maxwell came from my vet. But, no, I didn't train him to walk on a leash.

Actually, all cats probably should be able to wear a harness. Great in emergencies.

Going to camp is so great! What a wonderful idea and so much fun for you.

One of our cats walks fine on her harness but only until she wants to get out. Then she can slip out of it in a split second no matter what do. We haven't found one that we can keep on her, so we stopped trying. She goes in the carrier!

They so need to get my internet hooked up at the house so I can actually see what I'm typing at 7a.m. lol
