Hi Everyone,
Well, it looks as if Rusty still hasn't settled down with regard to his bgs. I got home after he had eaten his lunch, so won't test him again until +9.

My climb of Mt. Colden was a failure! The pace was too fast for me, my pack--weighted down with water for the 12-mile hike/climb--was too heavy, and I need to get more fitness back before I attempt this mountain again!! But it was a beautiful day and I got more than half way (got into the steep part of the climb). The trail was rocks, mud, and boulders. One of the guys went back with me as far as the place where the trail got easier and then he went back up to meet the others on the summit (actually the false summit, about 1/2 mile from the real summit). But it was a beautiful day and I'm glad I went because I got to see how much I have gotten out of shape since the summer began!!

Rusty is taking his "down time" in his basket. bbl,

Ella & Rusty

Hi guys .. rusty, what are you doing up there? That's not where you usually hang!

Sorry to hear your climb did not go as well as you had hoped, but it still sounds like you had a nice time with nice weather .. On our honeymoon Peter and I went to the smokey mountains .. we decided to try and get up to the top of Clingman's dome .. which is the highest elevation in the mountains .. we couldn't do it! ohmygod_smile We were so beyond out of shape, and I'm not kidding when I say the path is a SMOOTH PAVED PATH   we STILL couldn't do it! We were so out of breath and it was so hot and humid, we were panting like animals .. we got about halfway up, and a woman in probably her 70's or 80's came bustling down the path, encouraging us to finish the walk .. we nodded and smiled .. as soon as she passed us, we turned around and followed her down

BUT! On our 5 year anniversary we went back down there and conquered that path!!

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack your condo!

Hi Ella -

So sorry that you have to abort your hike. But that I understand, I've been there too. Sometimes things just are what they are. It is good though that you knew your limits today, and more importantly respected them. I have no doubt that you will try again. The boulder climbs are a challenge: easier to get up that down. I had one of those last summer: huge boulders, with intermixed smaller rocks, and it was a struggle to even find the route, the cairns were difficult to see. About half way into that portion I just stopped and thought: this is insane, time to turn back, as I knew it would he twice as difficult to climb back down.... I don't regret that decision either, as the portion I did do was outstanding - I am sure this morning was for you too. It is so nice that the one guy went back with you. Good man! And I hear you on the weighted pack with water.... been there too. :-D No worries - you'll be back.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

And Rusty - down you go!

Hi Ella, half way up MT. Colden still sounds pretty awesome to me. You got out and it was a beautiful day, and now you can see what you need to do for the next hike. What's with these kitties and the higher numbers, Maggie and Trixie at times, too. I don't know what they're eating at these parties, and tonight is another party on Rusty's porch.

Hi again,
Thanks for all your encouragement (bean encouragement and kitty encouragement). I did have a really nice walk on the way back to the trailhead. I figure I did about 7 or 8 miles in all. On my way back I could take my time and look around at the splendid woods and didn't have to spend the whole time looking at my feet. The destruction last summer by Hurricane Irene is awesome: it took out Marcy Dam and left huge piles of boulders and rocks that the water had hurtled downstream.
Devon, I love your story about the climb in the Smokeys. It gives me incentive to go back to attempt Colden again!
Michelle, your boulder story is classic. We climbed in the White Mountains (New Hampshire) once, above timber, in hot sun, and the trail was all boulders.

Rusty had a good afternoon with some outdoor time and some play with his bell balls. Today looks like one of those "rest" days and he seems to be coming down now. I understand that the kitties had a party on the porches. Good!

After I had a late lunch I walked downtown and got my hair cut. Edward and Rusty were lounging in the garden when I returned. Rusty only seems like he's lounging: he is ready to spring to life at the sight of the chipmunk or a squirrel. The birds he leaves alone.

Everyone enjoy the evening. I'm off to a few condos before I finally collapse.

I hope you are done with that yellow floor, Rusty. Blues and greens are where it's at. Sometimes a hike like today's is good motivation for future training. ;-)

Ella,
You are an inspiration to me! You did an eight mile round trip hike halfway up one of the high peaks with a heavy backpack, and made it back again BEFORE LUNCH! Then you went and got your hair done

Keep on coming down Rusty!!!! Glad you had a fun play day, though.

Ella...what an adventure! I am sure you are in better shape than you think with all the rowing you all do! We are also big into hiking but I know I am out of shape since Gracie's FD. We just don't have enough time to do the more intense hikes we used to do two or three times a week....some of them would be six/seven hour hikes and we have alot of mountain trails around here....the elevation is pretty good for Southern AZ. Our house is in the foothills and sits at 3,000 feet so once you get above that, it's an interesting hike for "flatlanders"   You can always tell if someone is from areas where there are no hills or mountains.

Have a great night!
