Good afternoon LL!

Yesterday's Condo:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=122952

Yesterday's SS:
(NS)AMBG 62 +17.5 76 +19.5 56
(NS)PMBG 57 +17 72 +19 83

What can I say? I was going to start Rocky back on that tiny dose of insulin this morning, but then he threw me for a loop with the BG of 50. It's a great number, but I'm not sure even if he was getting numbers in the 200 and 300s on a daily basis that I would have shot it. My vet won't shoot a 60, using their glucose monitor. I decided not to give the shot. He was a little high last night, but maybe he ate a few pieces of dried, extremely cooked rice that fell out of his rice sock between +13 and +17? I'm just guessing..

Rocky DID eat all of his breakfast and was still only at 54 this morning, three and one half hours later. I fed him again at that +16.5.

In the past we have said that it doesn't really matter what you call a dose, as long as you can repeat it. But when we are talking microdosing and I am trying to explain to you all how much insulin I gave Rocky, I think it's important that we are all on the same page. I looked up microdosing in LL and found one photo that looks EXACTLY like the dose I gave to Rocky this past Friday, August 1. There was another photo that pictured what his dose was NOT.

Julie and Sandy,
According to this photo here, what I gave Rocky on Friday night was less than .10u of insulin, but more than 'some' insulin.

This photo shows the EXACT amount of insulin that I gave to Rocky this past Friday night. It says the dose was .15u of insulin:

Sandy, based on you experience with BK, you think that I should continue Rocky on this dose, even when he presents me with a 50 at what would be his normal shot time?

I'm not sure that I'll do that because i worry about a hypo right now a lot more than I worry about him needing an increase in insulin. But, based on his SS, you believe that it was simply too fast for Rocky to stop needing insulin? I certainly cannot explain what happened and why all of a sudden he started presenting me with all of the greens. Maybe it happened because of the Doxy that he took, and the correct amount of insulin that he needed, both being given at the same time?

Re: 8/5 Rocky(NS) AMBG 50 +16.5 54

i think we're to Tuesday afternoon, now, with him not having insulin since Friday. You've already got him on a trial, so i want to go ahead and give you the directions. The main concern is whether or not his pancreas had enough support to be able to sustain it, and what you will do if he doesn't make it through the trial, or makes it through but doesn't stay in remission. All of that becomes less relevant as the days go by since he's had insulin. This is already day 4 of a trial and we may as well call it that.

Start the trial on his next green preshot.

If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. It is not unusual for cats to get lots of blue during their trial, especially at first. Don't panic and don't shoot unless we tell you to.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck!

If he gets through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic, but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low-carb food and small meals for the rest of his life. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood sugar weekly for the next few months and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him monthly. His weight should remain stable. If he seems "off" or sick, or is showing symptoms of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss) test his blood sugar right away. Keep the teeth clean; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission.

If you see rising blood sugar numbers, post here before you restart insulin and ask for advice on how to proceed.

so congrats on day 4!    it's been a long haul for both you and Rocky, and I"m very glad that he's gotten to this point.

Re: 8/5 Rocky AMBG 50 - OTJ TRIAL - Day 4

Thanks Julie! I felt I didn't want to start the actual OTJ trial, but because I haven't been giving him any insulin, why not do it? So we'll see what happens, day-by-day.. :-D

It is a bit nerve racking to think of not testing again until his next shot time. :?

Re: 8/5 Rocky AMBG 50 - OTJ TRIAL - Day 4

 we hear that a lot. sit on your hands. step away from the glucometer. have a poke free afternoon and just enjoy rocky. i bet he feels good.

Re: 8/5 Rocky AMBG 50 - OTJ TRIAL - Day 4

Good luck, Tina. I felt like you had already started as well. His numbers are looking great. Congrats officially.

Re: 8/5 Rocky AMBG 50 - OTJ TRIAL - Day 4

Tina, you have done a great job, and it's so exciting that Rocky has come this far. I agree that you need to enjoy being free from testing during the day. Just don't forget to visit with Rocky when you would have been testing, and tell him what a good boy he is for getting better and cooperating with all the crazy stuff you had to do to him. You both need to enjoy this time and remember what a difficult road you took to get here.

Wishing you lots of greens and sending good luck vines for a successful trial and full remission! We'll be cheering you on!

Go Rocky!!! Congratulations on Day 4 of the OTJ trial! Look how far you two have come.

Seeing a bouncy boy like Rocky get to this point despite the struggles, sleeplessness, and stress it took to get to this point gives me (and other bouncy-kitty-caretakers) hope that eventually the bouncing can stop. :-D

Thank you so much for cheering us on, everyone! Yes, Rocky was one super bouncy kitty: B-O-I-N-G! ohmygod_smile

Just adding our cheers for you and Rocky!!! Good luck!! Take it one day at a time, and enjoy the incredible progress!
