Gus appears to be doing very well, but his new vet called yesterday with the results from his labwork. He's a little anemic, his kidney function is impaired and his urine had a higher red blood cell count than was expected. On our last visit, the vet injected Gus with an AB that is new to the market. It's a time released (good for 2 weeks) solution and is better for acro cats because they don't have to be pilled. I didn't know that when acros are pilled, it is important to have them drink or eat some food so that the pills don't stick to the lining of the esophagus, eventually causing problems. However, the vet is rethinking the AB based on the lab results. He suspects that Gus may need a broader spectrum to resolve the infection. So, my poor guy has to go back to have another urine and blood done in order to see if/how much improvement there's been. Gus is fine while he waits for the vet, but gets super upset when he's held done for the samples to be taken, he actually hisses and growls! Also, this vet wants to compare his glucometer to mine so that he can tell if we're comparing apples to apples. He said that he believes that we can turn Gus around and get his blood and kidneys back to a good level. As I see the level of care that Gus is receiving now, I want to strangle that other vet for not caring! I'm grateful and thankful for the attention he's getting now, I just wish he didn;t freak out so much. Sorry for writing a novel here but that's what went on in our house yesterday.

Re: 8/5 Gus AMPS 258 Vet Again Tomorrow

I sure hope everything is okay with Gus!!! My vet, while I like him, has never even mentioned comparing glucometers. When I ask if he received the link to Champ's SS, he says yes and he looked it over, but then he doesn't talk about any of it and never asks me any questions. He diagnosed Champ with arthritis, but never mentioned taking x-rays to make sure of the diagnosis (I believe he has arthritis, too, but still). I'm glad this vet seems very thorough. I'm sorry Gus doesn't take well to the testing....makes it just as hard on us, I think.

I do hope you have a good day!!!

Re: 8/5 Gus AMPS 258 Vet Again Tomorrow

sounds like you've got a gem there! i like him from here!

do you know what the name of the AB is? just thinking i might need to know it for punkin.

yes, pilling can be a problem with acrocats. i suspect punkin might be sometimes having a little trouble moving things down his throat because sometimes he acts like he's working to get food out of his mouth. that's one more reason why i feel pretty good about watering his food. in some of the info here it also points to intubating with a smaller tube on acrocats because if the tube causes their throat to swell you don't want it closing up, just fyi. i think those comments were in the thread here on lantus that patti posted not too long ago called "acromegaly, what we know" i think.

good luck with gus tomorrow - perhaps he'll get used to this new vet and calm down. we can hope!

Re: 8/5 Gus AMPS 258 Vet Again Tomorrow

Sorry that Mr. Gus isn't feeling well! Fingers and paws crossed that the vet visit goes well and a successful treatment plan is quickly put in place! Was the antibiotic called Covenia? I'm at work and can't dig for the link right now, but Covenia is a medication that can create problems for cats. You may want to do a search on here and read folks' experiences before deciding if it is right for Gus in the future!

Scritches for Gus!!

Hope Gus has an easy day at the vet!! Oh dont we know what that's about!!
Our lady vet is very good, but of the 3 in the practice, I like her the best..Youngest, smartest, tries not to miss anything-I like that...Moonie usually pees on the vet tech, but I dont think she is violent
Hope you get good results & a good experience! Hugs from uS!!!

Bev: I bet it was Convenia. It has been noted to have many problems...in fact, Gracie went into anaphylactic shock after receiving it. Jaye wrote a condo earlier this week on the reaction Chester had to it. Here is her condo:

CHester and Convenia

Why did he give him an AB? Does he suspect a UTI or kidney infection (pyelonephritis?). A better choice is baytril and if it is the latter condition, they are usually on it 6 weeks. Will Gus eat pill pockets?

How advanced is his kidney condition? It's important to find out if the anemia is due to the compromised kidney function or not. If it is due to declining kidneys, you can give a multi B vitamin and also methylcobalamine (methyl B12) like we give the neuropathy cats.

Good luck at the vet.

Hi Bev - it is nice when we find a good vet, one that cares about the kitties an individuals. Good luck with the followup appt. I hope things go well. Always fun when they don't ant to give up their samples isn't it. Mannie doesn't either...

Very nice pmps for Gus. Surf well!
