Upped the dose .25. Numbers are a little higher. Is that because of the dose increase?

Charms is full of it today! Hard to get a hold of that ear for testing, and he is way too wiggly for that huge dose of insulin even with a yummy treat in front of his face! That is all good news though, I am not complaining! - Sam

Hi, just stopped by to say hello. I'm a newbie, so no dosage advice from me. Love those blues and greens in Charms' SS! It's so great when they start acting like themselves again :-D

fyi: I use extra strong reading glasses, plus a cheap magnifying glass, plus digital calipers to measure small doses on those tiny syringes (mine don't even have half-unit markings). The calipers are cheap, easy to use, and really help to keep those tiny doses consistent. I got my 4" ones via mail order from Harbor Freight.

It must take a while to get the entire 8.75U into Charms.

Come on Charms, no being a wiggle worm when you are getting your shot. We want to make sure it all get in, so you will feel better.

The higher numbers today could be a bit of a bounce from the lower numbers yesterday. He might have dropped more last night after you got that +1. Don't know for sure.

You are probably seeing a bit of New Dose Wonkiness or NDW. That is something moght not have noticed before Charm's SS turned all pretty colors.

I didn't notice a lot of difference in time to inject 8.75 units. As long as you have a good fold of skin lifted, it seemed to go in almost as fast as the smaller doses. But then the syringes I use it seems to have to press a bit to get it started, then it all goes smoothly. I know some people here shoot the cat when the head is in the food bowl keeping them fairly still, but Neko wolfs hers too fast so I put her on my lap.

Just a few questions -

Susan - thank you for stopping by! I try to read as many other condo's and absorb as much information as I can (so much to learn!) so I hardly get a chance to post in other condo's, so thank you for the support! I have two questions, there actually is a Harbor Freight store near here, but can you explain how to use the calipers. I know I have probably used up my quota of dumb questions on this board, but when I followed the link to them I was not sure how they work. Right now I have contact lenses in, and I use a pair of reading glasses, but maybe stronger reading glasses and the magnifier will help. Thank You.
Also - one of my other cats Oliver, has been coughing and sneezing for weeks, my vet put him on two different antibiotics, right now I am injecting him with baytril for 20 days, but it does not seem to be working. I have been wondering if it is actually allergies and not an infection, I saw that your Sammy is on Zyrtec, did your vet prescribe it? How well does it work?

Deb - I did get other BG saturday night I just forgot to put them in Charms SS! It is updated now!

Wendy - You are right about not seeing the bounces before, all I saw was red ,red, and more red! Now I am spoiled by the beautiful colors and greedy for the greens! I am not great at the shot thing, but at least I am no longer hyperventilating each time! I gave a lot of fur shots in the past, so I probably inject way too slowly still. I am wondering if when Charms was first diagnosed and he was on Prozinc, if all the fur shots caused that type of insulin to not be affective, I knew nothing about feline diabetes then , other than give him a shot twice a day. So I now I am wondering if all those fur shots were acting like deductions, do you know if the Prozinc acts like the Lantus, and would I have been better off staying with the Prozinc? Charms was up to 6u and when we switched and his +6 Bg, the only test I ever took , was never lower than around 360. Just curious what you think.

Here are a few of my thoughts. It seems that more kitties go OTJ here on Lantus than they do on Prozinc. They also seem to get better control sooner. The Lantus is a depot type insulin. Lasts 14-18 hours so the doses overlap and we get that nice long duration that helps our kitties more. The Prozinc is an in-and-out type insulin. Used up in 12 hours or less usually.

Some kitties do better on one insulin than another. ECID. Some caregivers can work with one insulin better than another. ECID.

Could he have done well on higher doses of the Prozinc? Maybe. I would not switch back at this point. I think the switch to Lantus in combination with the higher dose is helping Charms a lot!
