Good morning all! ~O) AMBG is 63 (+58 !)
TGIF !! Tucker woke me up at AMBG time.... with his wet nose in my face. I guess he likes his "me" time in my lap checking his BG! Both Sophie & Tucker were excited to have breakfast, but then gave me the "what's this ?" look when I put their plates down. Hmmmm.....
Hope all have a great day and start to the weekend!

niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!
time to put "Day 3 OTJ ~ AMBG 63" in the subject line of your first post!

Re: 8/3 Tucker- Day 3 OTJ ~ AMBG 63

My mission today: Print various info sheets for vet to read, including Tuckers SS. I will make an appointment to see him and discuss this whole thing with him. Including:
- "Intensive blood glucose control is safe and effective in diabetic cats using home monitoring and treatment with glargine"
- "Dosing protocal for cats on glargine or determir using daily home monitoring of blood glucose concentrations to adjust insuline dose"
- "AAHA Diabetes Management Guidelines for dogs and cats"

I was a bit superstitious about putting "Day 3 OTJ ~ AMBG 63"...... didn't want to jinx it!

:-D :-D :-D

When I think back to how Bandit was the first two weeks of testing, vs. how he is with testing now, I can't help but laugh (even though I was in tears at the time). He would spit and claw and struggle and I'd have to wrap him in a blanket inside a basket just to get it done and the whole time he'd be jerking his head all over the place trying to avoid the poke.

Contrast that to his biweekly BG check last night, where the moment the glucose meter beeped on he bolted downstairs, jumped into his "testing" basket, lied down and started purring and looking at me expectantly. You can NEVER underestimate the power or treats!

I am really, really glad you're taking that info to your vet. It's going to help every diabetic cat that walks into that office from now on (as long as the vet reads it, of course!). Good vets love it when you bring them educational materials they haven't seen and continue pass them on to their colleagues. Bad vets get angry or dismissive because they don't like admitting they didn't know something.

Chris

I'm not sure we've given you the OTJ trial instructions so here they are:

  • Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).

  • If he is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time, just feed small meals and go about your day. If he is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3 hours. If his number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then his pancreas is working!

  • After 14 days in normal numbers, we have a party :-D

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give him the support he needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck on your trial Chris!!! Hard to believe this is the same kitty who, a little over a week ago, was sitting at the vet being shot up with 6 UNITS (!!!) of Humulin; and even after being held captive for an entire week, the vet still "couldn't get his levels regulated." Kudos to you for being so proactive for Tucker, and especially for having the courage to try to educate your vet on this important topic. Paws crossed for a successful trial!!

Julia, I hope to make it a constructive talk with the vet. If he won't listen, I will be very persuasive! Going armed with info and stats will make a difference too.

Thanks Marge! That info helps a lot. I want to make sure this works, so I'll do what I can.

Boy, I've been very lucky so far with Tucker. Although it seemed like forever, It's only been about a week+ .
Now tomorrow I'll be steam cleaning the LR wall to wall carpeting!

Melanie,
It is hard to believe. He would have been dead if I followed the vets advice and gave 6U that first night at home. Pro home testing for sure!
Vet wasn't there this evening, so will have to go back again.

Hmmm..... PMBG was 65, +6 (+76) was 104. He did throw up a lot. Wonder if that caused the increase. ??

Chris, have a look at Karre's SS, and his numbers during the first (2008) OTJ trial...

That 104 is purrrfectly fine. No worries. Remember: Meter variance. Momentary stress. Hairball. Momentary bad mood. Along with vomiting and being grumpy about it and a little stressed about it, there are lots of factors that can cause that "rise" (Ha!) into the blues. You're fine. Tucker's fine. Think green!
