Papaya has been on her trampoline a bit again lately so I'm glad to see a slower drop to green this morning. She was a bit picky about food this morning and I had to put a bit of the 14% turkey & cheese on top of the regular food to get her to eat any. Later I offered the chicken Friskies which she turned her nose up at last week, and what do you know, she loves it today! I guess she just wants variety. I've got five cans of different flavours/carbs wet cat food in my fridge, which I have room for, but is going to be interesting when I'm on holidays at my parents' place later this month since their fridge always seems to be packed. That is one thing I liked better about Fancy Feast - the smaller cans meant I could change flavours without having a lot of leftovers in the fridge!

Enjoy your weekend, especially if you are in Canada too and have Monday off :-D

nice day Papaya!!

so when you travel and go to your parent's house.....what do you do with Papaya? just leave her at home with a few plates of food out?

hahha

okay.....I know you would never leave your baby!

but, how does she travel and how does she act in different surroundings?

Are you parent's supportive of your managing Papaya's diabetes? Do they "get it"? Or do you get the eye roll?

Morning Kelly! Ironically, we always had cats at home growing up even though Dad preferred dogs, because the reasoning was "cats are easier to look after, you can leave them for a few days". Yeah right!!

Papaya isn't too bad about the traveling. It's just over a four hour car trip. Last time I felt bad because with her neuropathy I don't think it's comfortable to be crouched in the carrier for the whole time, plus she is very stressed about even seeing the carrier never mind being in it, so I just piled the back seat with quilts and let her loose to burrow in. She was much quieter for the whole trip and I felt better because she was comfortable. I know it's not ideal since there's always the what-if you stopped and the cat got out, but she's really about as mobile as a throw pillow at the moment so I'd rather just know she's settled in for the ride. She has been to their place enough that it's familiar ground, and I think since they visit a lot they're very familiar to her too, so she is not stressed about being there. In fact she loooooves having carpet to claw since my place is all hardwood

As to my parents' reaction to my looking after her, it's quite interesting. As I mentioned Dad was never a big cat fan, but ever since I came home from Taiwan with Papaya he somehow has a real soft spot for her. Just after I moved back it was just Dad home alone with the cat while Mom and I were away for a few days. He knew she always slept with me and felt bad for her sleeping alone in my bed while I was gone, so he moved in there and joined her! That SO would have never happened with any of the cats we had growing up! Now with the diabetes, Mom doesn't say anything against it but if I mention anything she just greets it with bored silence until the subject changes so I don't think she really approves of all the fuss. Dad, though, always asks "How is Papaya? How is her blood sugar?" and is quite fascinated by the testing and dosing. He's always really loved chemistry so he was blown away by the tiny doses of insulin I have to draw, and was telling me about syringes he used to use for gas chromatography in which there's actually a wire inside the needle so they can measure tiny volumes. So at least someone is interested!

No worries, Melissa . . . there are a lot of people & kitties on this board! besides actually I have a Chinese name, and my surname is pronounced like Ann . . . so you were right, in Mandarin ;-)

I'm so happy dad likes Papaya, I use to build similar things like the gas chromatography called Dampers for air planes I worked for a Nasa program in my 20's very interesting. Well I hope you get things figured out but her numbers are looking so good

That sounds like really interesting work, Linda!

Papaya has decided she would like to try another reduction, having just dropped below 40 despite being fed increasingly high carbs hourly since shot time! I'm actually kind of glad to see it; with the bouncing lately I was wondering if this dose was still a tiny bit too high for her. I guess she wants to keep up to all the other kitties climbing down the dosing ladder  Well, we'll try it (although I suspect I'll be shooting through a bounce in the AM!) and see if she can maintain all these greens on 1.5 units.

Amy: thanks for my laugh for the day......

but she's really about as mobile as a throw pillow at the moment

you have a way with words girl.

I am glad you have the somewhat support from your parents, especially your dad. What we are doing....managing our diabetic cats is really such a full time job.....for some of us...especially at the beginning...it does become an obsession and such a traumatizing experience really.....to have the support of those closest to you is so very important. you have to have a sounding board.....a person who "gets it" and would never roll their eyes.....a person who roots for you. a person who really really wants to know if Papaya pooped or not. ha. true though.

which is why this board is so fantastic! I mean, your mom may just give you the polite nods ....but we truly care and wonder what Papaya's numbers are!!! We are happy when you are happy and we feel your "yuck" when we see those Blacks.

and days like this.....are great days for Papaya....and we are THRILLED FOR YOU BOTH.

she is not the easiest kitty to figure out and I think you do an amazing job!

It sure looks like Papaya was tired of that 1.75u dose. Congrats on the reduction.

Re: 8/3 Papaya AMPS=226 +7=53 PMPS=113 +3.25=65 +4.5=37

Thanks, Kelly . . . it's true about this board. Even people who are close to us may not totally "get" the time we put into looking after one kitty, but everyone here understands completely.

Thanks, Sienne! I can't believe she got done with that dose so quickly, only 11 cycles, but I am comfortable with the reduction since (apart from the bounces) she was still getting a lot of green on the 1.75.
