This is the second day in a row that Simon has started off the day with 115. Not too bad of a number. This is day 2 in the turkey experiment. Simon was 3 days on fish and his scratching was a little less. Yesterday, he started scratching more so I'm giving it another day or 2 with feeding him turkey to see if that is the problem. Overall, he is his usual happy, purry, contented kitty.

Funny story: Last night, I started hearing what I thought was a cat crying in the bedroom. I got really concerned and started calling for Simon and Cleo and then I realized that the sound was coming from my DH! I never knew snoring could sound so strange. He really sounded like Simon or Cleo crying, although they were stretched out on the bed, oblivious to anything. New type of snoring for him so I might be sending him to the sleep clinic soon!

I hope everyone has a good Monday especially for those who are having to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. My aunt and uncle are safe and their house was spared any flooding although they are without power for awhile.

Good to hear your Aunt and Uncle are safe.
That's a funny story about you DH's snoring :lol: . Hope for the sake of your beauty sleep he sees to it and get's it fixed.

Sorry for laughing at your DH's unusual snoring. :lol: :lol: :lol: Does he have sleep apnea?

If I get some time today I'll google elimination diets for cats. Since Simon is diabetic this won't be as easy.

Yes, Iorwen and Karrie, I definitely want my DH to get to the bottom of why he is snoring. I believe he probably has sleep apnea but I'm sure you know what it is like trying to get a guy to make an appointment at the doctor's office. I'm just going to have to schedule an appointment for him.

Karrie, thank you for helping with Simon's allergy problem. If you find out anything about types of food to try, let me know. Thanks!

Nice start for Simon today! Hope you get the itching figured out. It is always something huh?

Funny on the snoring. I have a DH, a black lab, and two cats who all snore like crazy. I like the sound of snoring. It lulls me to sleep. However, if your DH's has changed, it might not hurt to get it checked out. My sister has sleep apnea.

Hi guys .. I hope you can figure out what is causing simon's ears to itch so bad .. poor little fella, that can't be no fun .. I hope your DH get's his snoring checked out .. sleep apnea can be very dangerous .. Glad to hear your aunt and uncle were safe in the storm!

Here is some info on a feline elimination diet. Since both Cleo and Simon are scratching - I doubt they'd have the same allergy. If you have a magnifying glass I would look for mites.

There is no reliable diagnostic test other than a strict food elimination diet. Serologic testing and intradermal testing for food allergens have proved unreliable. The ideal food elimination diet should be balanced and nutritionally complete and not contain any ingredients that have been fed previously to the animal. Many diets contain novel protein or carbohydrate sources (eg, lamb and rice). However, it is often misunderstood that if any previously fed ingredient is present in the elimination diet, the animal may be allergic to the novel ingredient and the diet trial will be a failure. The key point in any food elimination diet trial is that only novel food ingredients can be fed.

Food elimination diets can be difficult in cats because many cats are reluctant to change diets. Cats should not be starved or forced into eating a new elimination diet due to the serious nature of hepatic lipidosis that may be induced by prolonged anorexia.

I'm not sure what happened to Simon tonight with this 183. A little higher than normal for him.

Marje, I do remember the 3 Stooges and the snoring! Luckily, DH is not that bad but getting close. I do need to make sure DH gets in soon because I know sleep apnea is pretty serious.

Sienne, oops, I forgot to link Simon's condo. Thanks for reminding me. I usually post early in the morning before work so I tend to not be totally awake.
Simon's vet put him on the fish oil the last time he saw the vet and he has been getting it in his food for about 3 weeks. I got a product from the vet called Actis Omega from Sogeval. It is a spray and Simon (and Cleo) love it although it stinks the house up. Simon is also on an anti-histimine but not Zyrtec. He is on Chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton). I wonder if it is safe to switch to Zyrtec if he is already using another anti-hist? I'll ask Simon's vet. I'll also ask about the Allerderm. May definitely be worth trying if your vet has had success with it.

Karrie, thanks for all the info on the elimination diet. I wonder exactly what type of food they put cats on and if it is good for diabetics? I'm going to try and look in Simon and Cleo's ears but the vet said that neither one had ear mites. Simon's ears look totally clear which is strange because I just don't know why he is scratching, although it is more the skin around his ears that he is scratching. He does have hair loss around his ears on both sides which is one of the symptoms of allergies according to one of the articles you sent. So confusing. I have been avoiding taking Simon back to the vet to discuss all this stuff because of finances, but I guess I can't put it off any longer.

Hi Georgia, good luck with the food experiment and Simon's allergies. I hope he start s feeling better soon. Glad to hear your Uncle and Aunt are okay. Maggie also has a high PMPS, what is up with our kitties. Have a good night.

Hi Georgia - good luck with the food experiments, and the allergies. I too would like to thank karrie for the links. One of my civvies has a sensitivity issue, and I am having the hardest time figuring out what she is allergic too....

I am glad that your aunt and uncle are ok. good news!!

It's hard enough to try to figure out allergies in humans much less in nonverbal cats!!! Good luck. I know it's going to be a challenge.
