Thinking about everyone that is weathering Irene this morning. My aunt and uncle and their dog were evacuated from an island off the end of Long Island yesterday. They are hiding their dog from the hotel people since it is not an animal friendly hotel. Luckily it is a miniature dacshound (I can't spell!). I haven't heard anything from them yet but hoping they are safe and sound.

Simon had really nice numbers yesterday (mostly greens). I am still experimenting to see what is causing his scratching. I tried the all turkey diet but that didn't help. For the last few days, he has been on an all fish diet and seems to be scratching less. But there are 2 other variables that I changed so now I don't know which one is helping. I switched his litter to Worlds Best Cat Litter and also started him on an anti-histimine. Today, I started him back on turkey/chicken again to see if that is the culprit. Meanwhile, his ears look really good and he doesn't have any red marks from scratching too hard.

Cleo also was scratching her ears but I started her on zymox and that is helping her alot. The zymox didn't help Simon when he was on it last.

Hi Georgia, I hope you can learn the source of Simon's scratching by testing the fuds. I use World's Best Cat Litter and love it, clumps really nice! Sending some be safe vines for your Uncle and Aunt and dog. I'll bet a lot of others have done the same with pets. Hotels should make an exception with the hurricane for people to take their pets.

Ok, Simon is scratching his ear more this afternoon. I'm wondering if it isn't the turkey since I just started him back on it today after a few days of a fish-only diet. Stay tuned for more of the never ending food experiment!

Glad Simon got into green yesterday. I hope you find the exact culprit on the allergy. Poor boy!! Also hope Cleo is doing well.

Hi guys - so sorry to be so late in posting. Good luck finding the allergy culprit. I have a civvie that also has a sensitivity issue... I thought I had it all figured out, and then BAM: back came the over-grooming etc... guess In really didn't after all. it is so hard to find the item that is causing the scratching. I hope that you are able to narrow it down.

I ope all is well with you aunt and uncle, and that they were successful in keeping their pup hidden. oh what a challenge!

I honestly don't know about a solid fish diet for a male cat. A steady diet of fish can lead to crystals.

This is some info that my vet sent me. Gabby has been licking in patches and has been thinning her fur. When she had her annual, her eosinophil level was high which is indicative of allergy.

From my vet:
There are several options—there is a product called Allerderm which is applied once weekly to the skin which can be quite helpful for itchy or dry skin. Additional fish oil omega-3 fatty acids, 200-250 mg daily, are often helpful, but may take up to 2 weeks to really have an effect. Antihistamines are often helpful—we seem to have the best success with Zyrtec, which is over-the-counter, or hydroxyzine which is a prescription medication.

We have Allerderm here, but you may be able to order it online. Zyrtec dosage is ½ of a 10 mg tablet by mouth (in food…) twice daily, or about every 12 hours, try for 7 days. Watch for drowsiness or restlessness, although side effects from Zyrtec are not likely or are very mild. Use plain Zyrtec, or cetirizine, only—no combo meds. The fish oil product we use is AllerG3, or you can use human products.

I've been using human fish oil for about a week. Aside from Gabby really liking the stinky stuff, she seems to be licking less.
