AMPS 272, B-0HB 2.3, 11lbs 13oz. Not a great start, borderline DKA. Someone's getting fluids this morning. He's been very fussy since he got home and is being kind of a picky eater this morning.

Maybe the numbness is wearing off after his dental yesterday? I had a 'dental' yesterday...and mine sure has!

Hope he starts to feeling better soon :)

I gave him 200ml fluids this morning. They didn't give him an antibiotic but they did give him an injection of cerenia and pain med. He seems like he's feeling pretty lousy, he's been very low energy today and he was very needy last night. Probably coming off the pain med and a little sore, unfortunately they said not to give him his normal pain stuff until this evening. I also think he's dealing with a bit of a sore throat from the tube it looks like they used. His meows have been a little bit lower pitch than usual.

Urine strip glucose 1+, ketones trace. Not going to freak out about the ketones since it looks like he probably went higher over night and is coming down now and this is just them getting flushed out with the fluids. I'll do a blood check again at +6.

205@+6, B-0HB 1.6. Ketones still dropping thankfully. He's still really lethargic though. Going to give it about another hour and a half and then give him some bupe

Why would he be in pain if he only had dental cleaning, no extraction? Do you think it can still be hurting? I'm glad ketones are going down and that you're on top of it. This is scary.

If they did a deep clean, which I think they do, they really get in there and it can be a bit painful. He had a little bit of gum recession, not enough for any extractions, but enough that they're probably a little more sensitive than usual. It was also a big shock to his system with all the drugs and fasting. It's also possible that the pain meds have already worn off and he's just waiting on more, he seems more lethargic today than he did last night so I'd say that's a definite possibility.

This is scary.
It was the first time it happened but we've been through this enough times now that I barely blink at it. I've got sub-q fluids at home and I'm very practiced in giving them now and we've seen multiple times that they flush out the ketones very effectively.

I gave him his bupe about an hour ago and he seems to have perked up a little bit. He apparently got up at some point and came trotting out of the other room looking guilty and now he's loafed on his mat instead of being passed out on it.

This describes a dental -lousy the next day, and I've heard that sad meow. Our vet gives 2 extra doses of Onsior after dentals, which help. I typically use one the next day, and save the other.

Glad Sebastian may be feeling better now!

195@+9, B-0HB 1.2. Looking good. Watched him go poop too and they're looking a lot better, no longer dried out and looking pretty normal.

PMPS 172, B-0HB 1.2, 12lbs 3oz. Look at that BG coming down finally. Weight coming back up too. Didn't want to eat dinner yet but I gave him a snack at around +9 so he's probably still a little full.

Oh so glad the dental is over! No extractions! Yeah. Just calculus and inflammation is enough to cause higher numbers. And , he’s all ready coming down.

I’m not surprised to see the higher ketone reading after a surgical procedure even though he did not have an extraction, he had general anesthesia and fasting. Bubba first started throwing ketones after his right eye was removed. Very common. fasting ( not enough calories) not enough insulin ( instructed to not give the morning of) and higher numbers.

You are a good caregiver and will keep a handle on it. I’m sure , in the presence on no more gum inflammation, his numbers will continue to improve.

Looks like Sebastian wants you to stay up with for a while tonight. Finally!

200 ml per day of fluids seems like a lot for his size. Is that what the vet suggested?

126@+2, 173@+4, 179@+6. Not looking good at +6. I saw that he still hadn't eaten hardly any food so I tested his blood ketones and got a 3.0, then noticed his mouth was all wet, then found the puddles where he'd thrown everything up. Blended up some turkey pate and gave him a syringe, threw that up within a couple minutes. So I gave him an injection of cerenia and some fluids and I'm going to give that a few to settle in and then try to feed him again.

Like what the heck. He'd been doing so well.

Yes

Food seems to be staying down now. Got about 1/2 5.5oz can in him. Going to give him a little time to digest and soak up the fluids and check back at +9 for a ketone check and feed him a little more

218@+9, B-0HB 3.5. He threw up again. Fed him some more, hopefully it stays down. Not a whole lot else I can do at this point. We'll see how he's doing in a few hours at shot time and if he's not showing any signs of improvement I'll be taking him to the vet.
