8/27 Radar - earned his 3rd reduction for the week last night!

Radar had an active cycle last night and went down to 35!! He did not have any symptoms but my heart was racing as I tried to get anything with carbs in him. He does not like honey. Gravy makes him ill. He does like ice cream but not when it's cold :eek: so I heated up some chicken and put ice cream on it. I've never been so excited to see such a weird combination be consumed. So that's the 3rd reduction earned this week. :woot: It looks like he's going to bounce to the moon now so maybe we can have a calm night or two so I can sleep.

Are you following SLGS? I agree - the 35 meant business. Please remember, though, that often, if reductions are too close together you may be seeing the influence of the depot not having caught up with the reduced dose and, as a result, the reduction doesn't hold.

Your point is well taken. :) Yes, I am following SLGS currently. I am aware that with all these reductions in such a short period of time that the depot is "messed up". As a result, it's hard to figure out which dose is actually the "correct" one for him at this time. It seems to me that the best thing to do is keep monitoring closely and give him a few days to settle down so I can see what the current dose is actually doing. Please share whatever tips you have... I'm sure I will need help, as the days unfold, deducing what to do about his dose.:bookworm:
 
You're experienced with managing Radar's numbers. At least at the moment, I think the numbers in the 30s trumps pretty much any other consideration. All I would coach is that if it looks like the reduction isn't holding, to bring the dose back up.
 
OK...chicken and ice cream...hey, it worked! Good job! (it was just plain ice cream right?)

It's tough when they start sliding down the dosing ladder and it seems every time you turn around you are looking at low numbers that scream 'Feed me'.
It's like driving downhill with one foot on the gas and the other on the brakes.

We had weeks on end of that sort of thing (being high dose meant we had a much higher starting point and a longer way down ). Have s look at BKs ss during February 2009...reduction after reduction, skipped shots, BCSs...once a BCS became the new dose!

Since ECID it is important to pay close attention and go with the flow keeping safety first.(I was extra careful since we were in the,at that time, uncharted waters if IAA.)

I'll add my voice to Cheryl's; if it looks like the most recent reduction does not hold don't hesitate to return to a higher dose. :cool:

Yeah numbers in the 30s are serious. He hasn't dipped that low since we were on Vetsulin two years ago ... and then I knew nothing about managing low numbers. I just knew that a cat who is sleeping with his mouth open needed attention right now. There's nothing like experience to get a person moving quickly. Thanks for the guidance. I will watch for signs of a failed reduction and take him back up if needed once his bouncy bouncy self settles down.

Yes, the ice cream was plain vanilla. :cat: :woot: Thanks for sharing your experience. It helps to see what someone else did in a similar situation. Last time Radar went hurtling down the dosing scale we were on Vetsulin and I could reduce his dose twice a day if needed. It was like being on a roller coaster with no seat belt. This time the depot makes things much more complex and so I really appreciate the assistance. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Kitty safety is of course my first concern. :cat:
 
Congrats on the reduction. Post SRT, and probably with IAA breaking, Neko also did the down dose charge. Exciting times, plenty of chocolate for the beans. :) If he keeps at this, you might want to consider a BCS at some point to accelerate draining the depot. I "cheated" and did 0.5 unit decreases until they stopped working, but it was rather unique circumstances.

Have you ever tried HC that used potato for carbs. Neko's tummy complained at wheat, so I used some of the higher carb Weruva line. Grandma's Chicken Soup was over 20 carbs.

Good to see he liked his EZComplete chicken. :cool:

I'm almost out of my precious Canadian maple syrup and am feeling unwilling to share it with Radar because he just doesn't appreciate it the way I do...:rolleyes: I guess I'll have to break down and buy some at Trader Joe's the next time I'm there.

Awesome suggestions, Wendy. I think I will do a BCS next time so the depot will drain a bit more quickly... and keep me a little more sane. :smuggrin: I have not explored using potato for carbs... I will get some Grandma's chicken Soup for next time.

I was also thrilled that he enjoyed his 1/4 teaspoon of EZcomplete chicken. I'm having quite a time trying to get a second protein to rotate into his diet due to his very sensitive tummy. It seems that everything I find has "something" that bothers him or he just won't even try it. I'm still hopeful that he will accept the Primal pheasant or rabbit. :arghh:

Maybe a bigger bottle. Hopefully he doesn't need it to much. Smokey got sick from the gravy and honey. He loved the syrup right off the spoon.
