KT had his first Lantus injection this morning.

AMPS 407
+2 - 379 - may have eaten 10-12 pieces of hard food within last 2 hours. He did eat a WHOLE CAN of FFeast Ckn/Beef pate.
+10- 293
PMPS 209

I hope I see a smaller number at +4! ETA: Missed it....

EDIT TO ADD: I have to share a funny - KT now comes running when I shake the TEST STRIP CONTAINER! His treat bag doesn't make much noise but the test strip plastic container sure does....

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379 QUESTION

Question - KT's +4.5 is 359. I was kind of expecting at least down to 200's....why might it not be coming down? He's been sleeping...

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379 QUESTION

Don't expect big changes yet. The first 5 - 7 days of Lantus are given to building the shed. In other words, not all of the insulin is available -- some of it goes into storage in order to give Lantus it long acting and cumulative effect. You're going to have to forget everything you know about insulin. Lantus acts very differently than Humulin N. N is harsh and it yanks numbers down. Lantus is a long-acting insulin that is a depot-type drug hence it's long-acting nature.

We also link our thread (we call them condos) from the previous day to today's condo. It makes it easier to go back to find something than searching the entire board. Here's KT's condo from Friday.

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379 QUESTION

I haven't had a chance to welcome you to Lantus Land. So glad to have you and KT here. We'll be happy to answer your questions and help you out as KT's shed fills and you start to see some activity.

Also, because I know you don't know this and we wouldn't expect you to, once a question gets answered, we usually clear that out of the subject line so everyone knows you are taken care of. Sometimes you would keep it in if the responder suggests you get other opinions but Sienne is one of our best on answering questions.

Hope to see you here in LL every day!

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379 QUESTION

So he'll live in these 300's for days? Guess I didn't understand that part well, thought since he was already on insulin it wouldn't be quite so hard on him. ALL this is new to me....didn't really know much about diabetes much less how it works in cats. Poor baby...he feels so crappy.

I have recently been were you are now...worried, frustrated, bummed out, etc. (See her chart around late July/early August)Casey's numbers were not as high as KT's, but I still had all the same feelings. I started to see subtle changes in her before I saw major changes in her numbers. She is now showing better #'s and seems to be feeling better each day.

You are seeing some inprovement in his #'s. I know it is difficult but hang in there, stick with the protocal, and things will get better. :YMHUG:

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379

Thank you all....he's such an absolute angel thru all this. I just hate seeing him not feeling like my wooly-booger.

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379

Oh I just SO want him to get down in at least the 100's. Should I do just a AMPS/+6/PMPS for the next 2 days or should I test more often? I plan to do a mini-curve next weekend or so. Is that too soon? If I don't need to be poking him, I'd rather not but if we DO need to poke, we will....

Do you know when KT will be reaching his peak/nadirs yet? ECID so not every cat hits their peak at the +6...some hit it earlier or later in the cycle. I decided to test Casey more than just the PS and +6's and by doing this I found that she hits her nadirs around +4.5.

Just a thought: Since you are concerned about testing KT too often, I am thinking you may want to spead the test times around while he is still in higher #'s. This may give you an idea of when he will be at his low points in the cycle without a high risk of him going hypo while finding out how he will react to the insulin and food.

I am fairly new at this, so I am not sure if the others would agree with me or not, just wanted to share what has worked for Casey and I.

No, this is his first day on Lantus. In Sienne's post above, it will take 5-7 days to see the changes. That made me wonder if it did any good to test more often than the 3 times right now.

ANOTHER QUESTION: If all of it isn't being used, will the numbers the next 5 days tell me more than he's no where near hypo?

Re: 8/27 - KT on Lantus - AMPS 407 +2=379

Hmmm....I just looked at KT's SS, he made it to the "yellow brick road"...cool ... what time is his shot time?

Think of the "Shed" as a storage shed or a reserve shed. This shed serves a purpose of the cats internal defense, thus it gets filled first. So, at first, it is mostly being stored for future needs and it looks like KT is using some now too.

When I first started Casey on Lantus, she had subtle/soft curves that stayed relatively high...for her. Then she had steep curves, and now the #'s are getting lower with smoother curves.

It looks like he is slowly working his way down. (When Casey had steep curves, her BG#'s that followed seemed way out of wack...aka she was having a rebound/bounce.) So far, especially being your first day on lantus, KT is looking good!!
