It's hopeless. She will not eat. She will appear interested, put her head in the bowl, start to lick - and then snort cuz she's congested. Once she snorts - she turns her head away and will not touch the food. So - force fed nearly 1 Tbsp Wellness this morning and a little bit of a cypro. The force feeding is not ok with me nor Kasha.

This sounds to me more like pain - last night seemed more like nausea. Maybe it's both. I don't know - but we're both miserable.

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103

Have you called the vet yet and told him about her not wanting to eat since this last treatment he did? You may have posted in a condo but I have been so behind in condos this week I may have missed it. If not I would call them up and tell them whats going on and see what they say

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103

Kasha (and Krys) I am sending you lots of healing white light and feel better snowflakes.
I think, with that low of a PS and not eating, I think you don't have to give insulin. I don't know, so don't listen to me.
Hope the cypro works and she decides to eat on her own today. (((Kasha and Krys)))

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103

She already got her shot and since I force fed the Tbsp Wellness - well, that's that.

I am waiting for my vet to call me today - they know what's going on but my regular vet was off yesterday. Yesterday they told me to stop the clindamycin (duh) and give her 100 ml squids and some food if she'd tolerate it. I got about 1/2 Tbsp in her at snack time (around 2:30 am).

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103

if she's not eating because she can't smell her food (from your condo yesterday) maybe it's time for an appetite stimulant? When Emma was very sick a few years ago her vet prescribed mirtazipine and it definitely worked. If I remember correctly she got 1/4 of a pill once every three days. I think it's also supposed to help with nausea. And it's cheap - you can get it at your local pharmacy.

Hope things get better for you both!

sending healing vines to Kasha
I'd demand the vet do something about this, its been going on too long, the poor girl must be miserable

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

There's no need to demand - my vet called first thing and we have an emergency appt this evening at 5:40 pm (because I'll be off work then). She's thinking we'll give her a Cerenia shot (other people here have used that, I believe) for the nausea and a shot of penicillin to get some antibiotics in her (I asked for the penicillin because I'm nervous about her not having any antibiotics in her for 2 days). Then, I'll go back to giving her the azithromycin tomorrow since she seems to tolerate that.

I did give her some cyproheptadine this morning to encourage eating, but she just licks at food and then turns away - it could be nausea. The vet doesn't think it should be pain, based on what she did - she said she didn't root around or anything - it shouldn't be very painful at this point.

When I left for work today, her BG was 132 (+1.5) - food spike or stress? Not sure. She is awfully light on her feet when she's running away from me, though...

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Awww Krys, I hope the new med will work for her nausea. She must be miserable not being able to eat.
I know how frustrating all this is for you, seeing her unhappy.

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Sorry about the situation with Kasha...very troubling when they won't eat...sigh...hopefully the vet visit tonight will help...wishing you well...

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Good luck with the vet visit and with the Cerenia shot. I have found the Cerenia to be very helpful for nausea. Keep in mind that it will wear off after 24 hours, so you may have to take her back for another shot. I also use oral Ondansetron for nausea issues. Have you tried Mirtazapine? If the cyproheptadine is not working, the mirtz might help.

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Given the way cats will tolerate and hide pain, I'd see if the vet will give you some bupe for pain. I'd use the "Humor me." approach. Gabby has a Fentanyl patch (no more patches -- they are murder to get off) after her dental/extractions. The patch was off in 5 days but I really don't think she was back to herself for a while longer -- probably close to 10 days. I don't think the pain was acute but I do think there was some discomfort. Keep in mind, every time your vet has messed with Kasha's mouth, it has probably irritated and inflamed the site.

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Sorry I have no advice to offer, I just hope Kasha feels better and starts eating very soon. Still sending healing vines for Kasha and hugs for Krys! :YMHUG:

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

I think the idea with the Cerenia is that the A/B (clinda) is what caused her nausea and that if we can get remove the nausea for 24 hrs, maybe we won't have an issue. I will ask about the mirtz - I had read that is should be used with caution in cats with kidney issues (she has been borderline for years so I'm not sure if I'm overreacting here) but I also read that it has been used in CRF cats - so if they can take it (with reduced dosage), I think it's an option. I'm a little worried about mirtz side effects - Kasha is crazy restless when under the influence of anything, it seems. But it would be nice to have on hand over the weekend when the office is closed - in case I need it. I'd use cypro if it's just an appetite thing, but the anti-nausea effect of mirtz might be better if this situation continues.

I'll also ask about getting a couple more syringes of bupe. I can give her some and maybe just have one or 2 on hand "just in case".

Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

If she does have the agitation side effect with mirtazapine, I understand that cyproheptadine can be given as an antidote for that. Bear also had the agitation side effect to mirtz, and he can't tolerate it. Others, though, swear by it.

Re: 8/27 Kasha AMPS 103 Cerenia?

Sending all kinds of vines to Kasha. I hope the vet can get her on track tonight.

Sorry - busy evening so I didn't have time to post till now...

Went to vet and got Cerenia shot and a shot of amoxycillin. Her temp was normal. Vet showed me how to suck snot out of her nose with a bulb syringe so I went out and got my own tiny bulb syringe to do this at home (yes - Kasha just loves it. Not). Her tooth socket is healing well, but I did get 4 doses of bupe to have on hand in case I feel we need it and I got a prescription for mirtz. My vet was not familiar with mirtz and she was pretty excited to learn about it - she got out the reference books and looked it up - gave Kasha the appropriate warning (no driving or operating heavy machinery, etc.). We have a prescription for both the 15 mg pills and the 7.5 mg pills - depending on what I can find at the pharmacies. I'm hoping we don't need it, but it would be nice to have on hand to add to my in-house cat pharmacy.

When we got home, Kasha still didn't want to eat so I force fed 1 Tbsp wellness and gave her shot. I didn't want to get too far off schedule. Before I went out for the bulb syringe, I held some food in front of her - she still didn't want anything to do with it, so I smeared some on her mouth and she licked it. Then she started licking at the food and I'm not sure how much she actually got down, but I was happy that she licked at it for quite some time.

I just went out and got some fried chicken. Going to see if that interests her at all... if not, it will interest me.
