8/26 Snuggie: not eating, is the rule no insulin despite BG?

Been a while since we posted here, we were on the acro board and Snuggie was doing great!

Long story short he’s been constipated since Sunday and isn’t eating - hasn’t eaten since early this morning. Didn’t eat all day at the vet during his enemas. Ate a little at dinner but threw it up.

so just confirming that the rule is no insulin if they’re not eating despite the BG? I’ll take a PMBG anyway.

we had just decreased to 10u after getting two readings below his reduction point (acro cat on cabergoline so we have a safety margin above 50)

I have no idea what my last post was - I’ll try to find it but am trying to spend time with him in case he needs to be sedated tomorrow to deal with the constipation (CKD, we are trying to avoid it but it may be necessary).
 
You have my sympathies big time! Ruby did not want to eat after her enema. I gave her a some anti-nausea meds and a shard of cyproheptadine and that helped. Did he successfully poop after the enemas?

Not yet. He got a few tiny nuggets out but not the whole shebang… patiently waiting! So I’m not sure I want to entice him to eat too much more if he’s not passing anything…
 
I don't think no food means no insulin. That's mostly a rule for newbies. Lev doesn't kick in for a while, so if you can get anything in him, LC, MC, dry food, that might be better than skipping, but I'm not so well versed in high dose kitties so take what I say with a grain or two of salt!

I skipped this morning already. Ugh. I have the blood ketone meter now so I’ll check that
 
I think you should shoot. If necessary you can use honey. Can you syringe food if he absolutely won’t eat?

I just noticed you give Normosol . I was given that when Tiffany left the ER. Boy did it sting. It took weeks fir me to be able to give her LRS after that. Snuggie doesn’t mind?

I agree and I will shoot. We have some food he will eat - problem is if he will keep it down. But I have one cerenia pill left and can use it tonight.

funny you should mention normosol vs LRS - he now has LRS due to a shortage of normosol and tolerates it SO MUCH BETTER!

Yes. Elise and Jill, I was wondering about this when you said Snuggie will only tolerate about 50 mL of fluid before he gets restless - but that he was tolerating the Lactated Ringers solution much better yesterday and you were able to get 1”0 mLs i to him. How’d it go today?
 
Oh man. I hope he can poop. A lot of cats will stop eating if too constipated. But we already talked about this yesterday. I will be repeating myself!
 
Even cats undergoing anaesthesia, who cannot eat anything, can usually get at least half a dose. So, not eating does not mean no shot. Insulin is used in the body for more than combating the carbs in food. And with Levemir, you've typically got about 4 hours to get food into him before the insulin onsets. Plus with him being so high, he'll be more dehydrated, which in turn makes it harder to poop.

Sending vines for Snuggie to poop soon. :bighug:
 
He was on normosol just per vet preference. I’ll makes sure they know he tolerates LRS way better!

497 PMPS so I gave hon full dose: He didnt eat but I have a literal buffet of foods out for him and will set alarms for key times to be sure he’s ok tonight.

He’s my best friend. Thank you for all the support - I’ll report back when I can -‘or when he poops!
