Well, we finally did it! We made the switch from ProZinc this a.m. 13 hours from Buddha's pm shot of ProZinc, he got a fat 1u of Lantus. 1u of u100 insulin in u100 syringe is a very small amount! And since Lantus is clear it's kinda hard to be sure there was anything in the syringe. How does one even see bubbles? My eyes are getting old. lol

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335

I asked the same ??? its so hard to see and when you have to start measuring between lines thats even more fun I bought a magnifying glass and use it for every dose no matter what and welcome to LL and to using Lantus Buddha   take time to read all the stickies at the top of the page if you have not already :-D

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335

I know what you mean Donna. We switched from ProZinc recently too, and Lantus does look like almost nothing in the syringe!

Welcome to LL, I hope Lantus works great for Buddha!

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335

Hi Donna & Buddha! A warm welcome to LL!
It's so great to meet you two...here is your link to your previous thread or as we call it here, your "condo" viewtopic.php?f=9&t=22565
Each morning we post our AMPS with our kitty's name as you did this morning. Good job! We also link to our previous days' post so others can click on it and see what transpired. It makes it a little easier here...we do have many kitties and this keeps it less chaotic and easy. If you have any questions or updates during the day, you make post them in your daily condo..one condo per kitty per day.

I hope you will have much success with Lantus... I read in your profile about DKA and was wondering when that occurred...
At the top of the page there are a few starred stickies that have needed information so I encourage you to read them all and ask as many questions as your might have.
Do you have High Carb cans of gravy on had for any low numbers that you might find with Buddha?
there is a list of things to have in your HYPO kit in the sticky above... Sticky: Lantus & Levemer New to the Group lease Read....

If you are home today it would be good to get some BG tests done. We ask that everyone get a before bed time check each day as well as the AMPS and PMPS. Any other tests will be important information for you so it would be wonderful to help fill n the blanks with spot checks. ok? By the look of your SS you are already doing a great job of keeping good data! Excellent!
Enjoy your new insulin Buddha! See you later!

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335

I went to see my doctor today for my annual check up (everything is good, thank you!). So I asked him if he had any free samples of the opticlik pen. And he did and he gave me one. It came in a solid looking case. The pen is rather nifty too. So that's how I'm going to store the Lantus cartridge that's in use. I think it will help protect the insulin from fridge spills and temperature fluctuations too. I have a smallish fridge and a largish family and we eat at home mostly, so my fridge is filled to the brim almost always.

Has anyone ever tried using the pen's dosing device? Or is it not very accurate with tiny cat sized doses?

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335

Welcome to Lantus Land!! How could I not visit a cat named Buddha  --Donna, lantus comes in vials, cartridges, and the lantus solostar pen-The pen is convenient as I have mine standing up in my fridge, takes up very little space, and is easy to use(bit more expensive)-You do not roll, shake, or mix the lantus at all, it is fragile, but you will be happy with the results..And you can have some good control with it.

That's not such a bad number for a newbie-Just please monitor him, if you can, at least at +3,+6.PMPS, and before bed-That's a mini curve(the very least I do daily)--
Ask questions, read the stickys on top of page, & someone is here to help 24/7--Good luck, Oh I forgot, you have the Great Buddha with you
:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D --Welcome to LL!

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335 +3 393

I was a little surprised that the pharmacist didn't offer me a pen device when I asked for cartridges instead a vial, but I guess that is a separate prescription. The cartridges just look naked without a cover. Hopefully the pen won't look like something the kids want to play with.

Buddha was named, in part, because one of the cats he "replaced" (and by replaced I don't mean in my heart, there's no replacing a GA cat in my heart, but there does seem to be an emptiness about my house without a couple of cats underfoot) was named Loki. I loved Loki to pieces, and while it is entertaining to live with a mischievous diety, it's also rather exhausting. So I picked the Enlightened One as his successor thinking that we would live a quiet, contemplative life. But it hasn't exactly worked out the way I'd thought. My next set of cats (many, many years from now) will be called safe names like Whiskers or PawPaw.

We are well stocked with lancets, strips, Ketostix (a new box of Relion brand and many left of past prime Bayer brand -- do I really discard after box has been open 6 months?), fancy feast in low to high carb varieties, and there's always honey or maple syrup in the house.

DKA was before the switch from Vetsulin to ProZinc, late November last year. Buddha's never been regulated on ProZinc, numbers high or low or in between, but the Ketostix texts have never changed color. I can tell when Buddha has a couple of bad days in a row. I'm hoping it won't take long to fill his Lantus shed.

It's good to see other former PZI-ers doing so well. It gives me hope.

Re: 8/26 Buddha AMPS 335 +3 393

Welcome, Donna & Buddha. I was wondering when you would get here. I think everyone answered most of your questions, except the one about the pen's dosing devise. That is not accurate for our small doses. I had the same problem with 1 unit feeling like nothing, but now that we're on such a large dose, I don't have to worry about it anymore. Just go buy some reading glasses - that's what I use.

I hope Buddha does really great on Lantus and that you can get him regulated soon.

The pens measuring device does not do well with small amounts -- like half or quarter units or some of the shaves and fat doses we use. Best to use a syringe. The syringe is far more accurate.
