Good afternoon! This is Jetta's first official condo. I got her spreadhseet up and running last night and we ran to the vet for a BG Check since I haven't gotten my meter just yet. Today's reading is the best we've had yet!!! Go Jetta! dancing_cat

I really realize the importance and necessity of home testing after today. She came down 100 points since yesterday's same time reading. Have a good Saturday everyone!

Hello!

I was not able to see Jettas ss from the link. I'm not sure why, hopefully someone with better technical knowledge than I have will be along.

Yes, home testing is very important. You want to make sure Jetta is safe. Hope you get you meter and test strips soon, it will make all the difference in the world knowing Jettas blood sugar ups and downs.

HI and Welcome to Lantus Land (LL)!

I wasn't able to open Jetta's SS either  I hope your meter and test strips get there soon.....as you can see the importance of hometesting. You are in the right place....so ask your questions...and keep reading the stickies at the top of the page, tons of great information. Sorry you have to be here, but glad you found us.

Thanks, I'm sorry I'm here too but so happy to have found this place! We had a really scary first few days this week (DKA) when dx'd, so I'm glad Jetta's here and not over the bridge.

I fixed her link.

Anyone with CP experience? Jetta got a pain injection on Tuesday (buprenorphine), but nothing for pain since then. Should I get another injection for her or just gauge how I think she's feeling? I know Pancreatitis is painful, so I don't want her uncomfortable if she doens't have to be.

wow - looking at her ss she has constantly come down since the beginning. boy i hope your meter arrives quickly - we don't want her to go too low. i don't know how tight your budget is, but if it doesn't come in your mail today it won't arrive til monday at the earliest . . . i might go get one. i don't want to alarm you, but it makes me a tad nervous. glad you went and got her tested today.

if you can't do that, i wonder if lowering the dose a tad til the meter arrives would be a thought. i'll ask a couple of people with more experience to give you opinions on that.

often kitties seem to go lower at night, too.

your question re: CP - you can add that in your subject line by editing your first post subject line. then folks with experience will see it and stop in. there are so many of us who post daily that no one can get to everyone's condos every day. a question in the subject line will flag it, though.

Jaclyn:

I want to reinforce Julie's point. You're seeing good numbers on this dose. I'm concerned that you have to run to the vet to get a BG test AND that you can't test at night. While the newbie kits are mailed out quickly, I'd really like to encourage you to do one of two things. Either as Julie suggested, lowering Jetta's dose. I don't think this is the best strategy given the recent DKA episode. The other alternative, if your meter didn't arrive today, is to get a meter. If there's a Walmart near you, their ReliOn brand meters and test strips are inexpensive and many people here use them. If there isn't a Walmart nearby, you can probably find coupons for a free or deep discount on a meter on the web. Unfortunately, strips at a pharmacy are much more expensive than if you were able to purchase on-line. Both because of the DKA and that you're seeing lower blue numbers already, I want to encourage you to start home testing ASAP.

You're absolutely correct -- CP is painful. Aside from a shot for pain management, did your vet instruct you to do anything else? How is Jetta eating? I would suggest you speak with your vet about getting some buprenex/buprenorphine. This is an opiate that is often used for pain management. It can be administered orally by squirting the dose into the cheek pocket (or by injection). This is a post on pancreatitis that one of the vet techs that used to post a great deal here wrote some time ago. Pepsid (famotidine) is one of the meds that most of our cats that have been through CP have used, especially if our cats are nauseous or off their food.

Hi again,

Now that I can see your ss, I agree with both Julie and Sienne. Try and get a meter ASAP. It's too risky to be giving insulin without monitoring. Do you have some high carb. food on hand? If not pick up a few cans. Janet & Binkys food chart can help you find which foods are high carb (18% and higher).

Also,, since Jetta was recently DKA, you should be testing her urine daily for ketones, using Ketostix. They generally can be purchased at any pharmacy but you may want to call ahead and make sure they have them.

Boy I sure set off a few panic alarms!! I just bought a meter. I'm about to test her... but I just made her really mad ginving her her Cerenia tablet. I''m going to have some major making up to do!

hi jaclyn! didn't mean to set off panic alarms - i'm not as experienced as the rest of these folks, but i could see enough to see that you needed some more information.

how are you doing with the home testing? it takes a little getting used to - and sometimes it's hard to get blood for the first couple of weeks til their ears grow more capillaries. everyone on here has a bag of tricks they use to have more success. if you need ideas, believe me, just ask and you'll get inundated!

you can see that many people update their kitty's BG numbers throughout the day - others will keep an eye on your subject line and pop in if you need help.

oh, and do you know about pill pockets? i had to give punkin cerenia too, and an antibiotic. the duck and pea pill pockets are safe for diabetics. it's like a play-dough that you wrap around the pills. punkin spent 18 days with me pushing the wrapped pill down his throat, then on day 19 he woke up and said "that's the best thing i've ever tasted. let me have it." and for the next 12 days i wrapped the pills and threw them on the floor. he gobbed them up. silly kitty.

glad you got a meter. i feel better. :-D
