Champ has been very hungry today and I'm thinking it just may be these higher than normal numbers causing it.

Soooo.....had to head to the vet today. I was scratching Champ on the underside of his neck and he was just going crazy nuts!!! Like it itched so bad and could I please not EVER stop and here's my back foot to help you scratch just a little bit harder. I mean he was going nuts. That's not like him so I was feeling around and found bumps all over his neck and going down onto the top of his chest. Because his BGs have started to climb, I wanted to get him to the vet to make sure there was no infection and to find out what this was. They shaved his neck and, I swear, he looks worse than a pimply-faced teenager. His neck is full of welt-like bumps. The vet said it could be from anything. I mentioned that I started giving Champ different foods when he was so sick to find something he liked and I've been feeding him Special Kitty (Walmart), Friskies, and 9-lives since he seemed to like them. I asked if he could possibly have an allergy to something in these foods and he said that was a good possibility (they are made with unknown byproducts after all). He gave me an antibiotic spray to spray on Champ every 12 hours. It's called Gen-One and it's a gentamicin antibiotic spray. Has anyone heard of this med? I'm going to do some googling, but I'd love to hear of some first hand knowledge if anyone has ever used this. Paws crossed that this gets better quickly!!

Oh man.... Poor Champ!

I've never heard about gentamicin spray but it sounds like the vet prescribed it as a topical antibiotic. If you look it up on the web, it's typically used for skin infections.

Gabby has been licking which I assumed was due to allergy. My vet suggested adding about 200 - 250 mg of fish oil to her food. She said it takes about 2 weeks for it to have an effect. It may be worth trying that -- unless Champ is sensitive to fish. Although, any omega-3 oil would work.

You might want to eliminate any beef from Champ's diet as a first step. Ditto with anything that contains gluten. Those are often the culprits when it comes to a food allergy/sensitivity.

Glad to hear vet does not think it is serious. I know you will keep an eye on it. Did he shave him so you can get the spray right on the skin instead of in the fur?

Poor Champ! Hopefully you can get to the bottom of things quickly!! I have to say, good fish oil has done wonders for Willie's skin... since putting him back on raw and using high quality fish oil in his diet, his dandruff has completely disappeared for the first time in over a decade and he seems to be less itchy overall. Definitely worth a try! I'd also suggest sticking to foods that not only are gluten and beef free, but also that are single sources for protein as much as possible... if the allergy is from a protein source, it will make it easier to isolate which ingredient is giving him troubles. Fingers and paws crossed that he is looking and feeling better soon!!

Champ! U needs de KTSS to get off de vetty smell? We can come by on tonite's pizza tour... u should join us!! --Willie

Hi Sienne!! I don't think Champ has a sensitivity to fish because he's always eaten fish flavor foods with no problem. I've been wanting to get some omega-3 into Champ anyway because I heard it was good for arthritis. I googled the spray and their website says its a corticosteroid which makes me nervous to try. It also says for dogs only. I called the vet back and they said they have used it on cats before with no problems, but it still makes me nervous.

Hi Marje!! Champ was shaved from his jaw down to a little into his chest area. These seriously look like hives. They said I should spray it on him and it should dry relatively quickly, but if he is licking at it I should put Champ in an e-collar...which I DO NOT want to do.

Poor Champ, there's nothing worse than itching! I bought fish oil capsules and use a safety pin to puncture and put on our civvie kitty's food. Stinks good, I think!

oh boy - poor Champ! I know nothing of the spray, but I too would be a little leary of using it... they say it is fast acting, maybe then it might me OK. I dunno... And he was shaved? POOR CHAMP again.... Well I hope the meds work, and he feels better soon.

CHAMP!! DUDE!!! You ok man? You got shaved and everything??? That is so uncool, but I guess if it helps you get better. The KTSS will come and pay you a visit, help with that vetty smell. My buddy got shaved! ~~ Mannie

Hi Patty, sorry to hear about about the bumps on Champ's neck and the itching. Poor little guy, it has to be miserable. I hope the topical ointment helps, and the fish oil is a good suggestion. Is there one food that's just new that you can think may be causing it? Sending some healing vines to Champ.

Hey Champ, yes, the KTSS and crew will be by tonight with some pizza and to visit you, okay.

I am SOOO happy you are all coming to visit me!!! This is the third time I had to go to the vet in one month!!!! I mean, come on!!! I think pizza should make it all better, though. Yeah, I'm pretty sure it will. PIZZAAAAAA!!!!

Oh dear, poor Champ! I don't know anything about the spray but I can relate to the allergies because of Simon's allergies. I am still trying to figure out what is causing his ear and head scratching. I would definitely do a little more research on the spray since you said it is used primarily on dogs. I guess since it is a topical thing it might not be such a worry. Praying that Champ starts feeling better soon.

Re: 8/19 Champ AMPS 214, +4 251, +6.5 272 - HOME FROM THE VE

Poor Champ! Not only does he itch like crazy, they gave him a bad haircut. If Champ is on 3 different foods, it's kind of important to find out which one it is that's making him break out. By process of elimination, that should be easy to do. Any LB changes?

So sorry to hear Champ is all itchy now...poor little dude! I hope he's feeling better ASAP....

Re: 8/19 Champ AMPS 214, +4 251, +6.5 272 - HOME FROM THE VE

Hi Bev!!! LB action is good. I threw out all the "junk food" like Special Kitty, 9-lives, and Friskies. I still have a bunch of Wellness, which he started refusing to eat a while back. So guess who decided he wanted to eat it tonight?!!! Yup!! So I'm going to keep him on a no by-products diet (except for FF because he's eaten that for months with on reaction) and see if things clear up. I wish my daughter was here so I could take a good picture of his neck. It really is weird looking!! Unfortunately, she won't be back until Monday.

Hi Ann!! Unfortunately, I don't know what food may be causing it so they're all getting thrown out, except the ones he's been eating for months.

Hi Christie!! What kind of fish oil is a good one and how much would an 18 pound cat need?

Hi Georgia!! I sure how this doesn't last too long!!!!

Hi Anne!! I'm definitely going to give the fish oil a try!!

Hi Michelle!! He only gave a little bit of a shave on the neck and chest. I didn't do it this summer, but for the two summers before this one, I had Champ COMPLETELY shaved. It was the only thing that kept my eye allergies from him down. I didn't do it this year incase (GOD FORBID) something happened to him.....I wanted him to be able to be buried with all his hair!! Morbid, I know

Re: 8/19 Champ AMPS 214, +4 251, +6.5 272 - HOME FROM THE VE

Hi Amy!!! I missed your post!! Yeah, I'm a little tired of all the trips to the vet. Champ never had a problem for ten years, until he was diagnosed with FD and now.....BAM....everything at once!!!

Re: 8/19 Champ AMPS 214, +4 251, +6.5 272 - HOME FROM THE VE

Hi Patty & Champ,
Poor Champ! The spray sounds scary to me, too. Have you considered trying a simple old remedy: Witch Hazel? We use it on our skin irritations, insect bites, etc. and it really takes away the itch. I don't think it is poisonous if ingested. I use Thayer's 100% Witch Hazel (no alchohol) on my face occasionally and Rusty likes the smell of it enough that he gives it a few licks!

I googled acne + cats + witch hazel and found the following, which is a witch-hazel based remedy, but I think you could just try witch hazel by itself (make sure you get the 100%): http://www.localharvest.org/feline-acne-wash-C4548

Hope Champ will be improving soon,

Ella

Oh I know that feeling...not so much with just Trix (although she hasn't been a "cheap date" herself  !), but with my whole herd in general. I have yet to make it through a single month this year without someone going to the vet for some reason....I guess 2011 is "The Year of the Vet"!!!
