Yesterday on Ruby's First Enema.

Thank you so much to everyone cheering us on yesterday as we did our first at home enema. :p It would never have occurred to me to do it at home if it weren't for the great vet tech who comes to help me with Ruby. He went above and beyond what any other cat sitter would have ever done in injecting the enema fluid and giving her a good massage. The whole thing lasted 10 minutes and Ruby emptied herself within 2 hours. It would have cost me a good deal of money to do it at the hospital, not to mention the waiting and the kitty stress, so I am grateful to him and his fondness for Ruby. Started .5 ml of Lactulose in her food this morning in the hopes that will keep things regular.

After a steep drop in BGs yesterday and understandably not wanting to eat after her harrowing experience, Ruby did eventually eat and came back up to safety. She seems more comfortable now and is at her usual window perch waiting for her mourning dove and squirrel friends to show up.

Hope everyone has a good day and all of the kitties surf safely! :bighug:

Good morning Katherine :) Hoping today is a much less eventful day for sweet Ruby and like Dolly enjoys watching for her squirrel friends, I know I love watching them except when they start eating our patio chair cushions  So happy to see good numbers and that she is eating again. Have a good day ( at work I would imagine). Enjoy your business trip tomorrow. Hugs to all :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Hi Katherine, that's such great news! I'm glad the vet tech was there to help you.
He really seems to love love animals!
She must feel so much better, I hope the lactulose will keep her regular
Nice to see those greens!
She must be saying to her self that you violated her :p you know I'm only kidding.
I hope you all have a nice night ♥:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yay for poop!

@Wendy&Neko is right, and we have done at home enemas as well. It is a good strategy to get ahead of things, before needing a manual extraction at the vet. (Vets really don’t like to do enemas, in my experience, and take a wait and see, and medicate approach. That can cause bigger problems later, in my (non medical, kitty mama) opinion. Our take action time is 36 hrs without a poop because of Cosmo’s history. Other kitties may be a longer take action number. I think you had mentioned that Ruby vomited during the procedure? This ‘could’ be that the fluid may have gone in too fast. If you ever needed to do this again (hopefully not :)), you could try depressing the plunger a little slower. We did have a long, slim tube at the end of our plunger when we did them. Thankfully, Cosmo has been completely regular on his own for more than a year (yay!!!)

For anyone reading, you do need a specialized cat enema system/fluids, you cannot use over the counter human enema kits on a kitty. Not even infant enema kits. They can be toxic to cats.

As for the leakage…yes, it happens  It does stop, I promise! We gave Cosmo some regular bottom dabs with a soft tissue and tried to set him up on a blanket as much as possible. Cosmo is short haired, so that helps us some. A longer hair kitty may need some more help and clean up ;)

I hope the lactulose works well and so glad she is up and active this morning :bighug:
