Morning LL!

Day 8 of rabies watch is here, yahoo!!! We are out at my parents place with my sister. We've had enough of the quarantine and have decided to say screw it!!! Leo has been doing great and no signs of rabies. Mousing has been going well too, he caught a mouse the other day (it was dead) and brought it over to where i was standing, he set it down, picked it up flung it in the air and was batting at it, then his brother Toban came over caught it, and ran away with it and ate it. See what happens when you play with your food?

We had a kibble incident yesterday, i walked out on the deck and someone was munching on dog kibble. I picked up the dish and put it away, next thing i know Leo's inside eating cat kibble   Geez, i had a sit down with him and tried explaining that kibble was the devil and kibble is the reason why he's here in the first place, and i told him if he keeps this up he's going to be on the juice forever. He obviously misses the crunchies. I wonder if he understood?

Looks like you caught him before he got too much! At least he's only trying to eat cat food--a couple nights ago Bandit somehow managed to open my brother's closed door and got into the remains of pizza and chicken wings. RIGHT after we start his OTJ trial, of course! He also tried to scale a wall mirror (I don't even know how to describe it) in order to get at the remains of a bowl of egg salad. Luckily, my boyfriend caught him while he was trying to figure out how to balance on the frame.

So glad Leo is ok! Did they get test results from the bat?

OMG your Bandit is sooooo crafty when it comes to food, and congrats on the OTJ trial!

No the bat wasn't tested, by the time we made it to the vet and the idea of testing the bat came up it was 16 hours later and that bat was laying on the lawn cooking in 30 degree C weather, plus i would rather not know if it was positive for rabies.

Thank goodness i caught Leo before he ate too much kibble, he's become incredibly fussy these last few days and is refusing to eat any Wellness and is turning his nose up at FF. I bought him some Sophisticat and that seems to be a hit!

Hi Tracy, yay for Day 8, and soon it will be all over. Leo has been sneaky with the kibble; his numbers are really nice, so lucky you caught him red handed! Hope you are having a nice day and weather not too hot!

Of course he understood you! He heard Leo, blah, blah, blah, crunchies, blah blah blah. That's what you said right?

Poor Leo just wanted a taste. C'mon mom. Bravo for saying screw it to rabies watch. Leo is just fine and should be allowed to go throw dead mice darn it.

Great numbers for the big guy today! Hope you are having a blast with your sister and have a wonderful evening Tracy!!

leo loves his kitty crack! i'm sure your scolding convinced him to never eat it again. ;-)

glad you're coping ok with the quarantine. almost over. :-D

Re: 8/18 Leo AMPS 131, +4 77, +5.5 112

I'm just really glad Bandit is back to living up to his name! I was so worried about him for a while. These past two weeks especially he's been double time scheming for food, just like his old self. You saw my post about the ice cream incident.

Every time I take him to the vet, the first thing she asks for is new Bandit-stealing-food stories. She said they get retold in the office all the time. :-D

Re: 8/18 Leo AMPS 131, +4 77, +5.5 112, +7 65 & Dental ?'s

Ok so since i'm on holidays until Sept 2 i was wanting to take Leo in for a dental, of course Leo's vet is on holidays as well, so Leo's vet asked the locum vet to take care of his dental. Well she just called and he's scheduled for a Monday dental, i'm kinda freaking out and totally forgot to ask any questions. She just said that blood work will be taken while he's under, his previous blood work shows that his kidneys are working fine, but his liver numbers worried her, but she attributed it to him being diabetic and she was sure his numbers would be much better now. She said with him being so close to remission not to give him his insulin the day of, and that she usually suggusts giving a half dose the day of. What other questions should i ask? I'm kinda not wanting to take him in this soon, more so for my sake (i'm freakin!)

Day 8 - woohoo! I just knew Leo would be fine!

I think Leo and Trix are in cahoots...I had to peel her off a kibble bowl this morning, too. I know she only got one or two, but man is that little cat strong when it comes to kibbles!

Julia - Bandit is very, very impressive at his craft    !

I know it has to be scary to have the dental done (I'm still holding out), but now seems like a perfect time since you'll be off work for a while and Leo is doing so well on such a small amount of insulin. I say go for it, though I would ask our expeienced people about giving him any insulin on the day of the dental and also about feeding beforehand, too.

Re: 8/18 Leo AMPS 131, +4 77, +5.5 112, +7 65 & Dental ?'s

This is a link to the dental info that my vet makes available and describes their procedure. They are pretty state of the art when it comes to dentals.

Below is the info we suggest you get from the vet. It's similar to the link above.
1) X-rays: either before or the day of the procedure. Also x-rays after to make sure there are no tooth fragments left after an extraction.

2) Bloodwork: prior to the dental to rule out anything that would prevent the procedure

3) Pre-anesthesia sedation/induction: Ketamine (some has been recalled), propofol, valium. Induction should be with an IV drug vs. a gas.

4) Anesthesia: Sevo or Isoflurane (these should not be used for induction, however)

5) Cardiac monitor: pulse oximeter or cardiac monitor

6) IV catheter for fluid access

7) Post-procedure antibiotics if necessary. (See Dr. Lisa’s commentary)

8 ) Pain meds: administered post-procedure and to take home: Buprenex, no metacam due to the potential for renal failure. A fentanyl patch may be excessive for the purpose of this kind of pain management.

9) Blood pressure monitoring (Doppler or Cardell monitor)

10) Warming: make sure there is a means of circulating warmth vs. one warm spot. The latter can cause burns.

Awesome Sienne, thanks!!!! Great information you sent me for sure, i'll make sure and print it out to take with me when he does go in.

I've cancelled the appointment, i chickened out. I don't know this new vet and have only spoken to her over the phone, i'd much rather wait for our regular vet, which means it probably won't take place until September.....which suits me just fine! :-D Plus side is, she quoted me $500-$800 depending on how many toofies he needs pulled, 1 of his canines for sure as its been broken since he was just as slim, trim kitten. I'm just worried about his mouse hunting, we can't get all of his teeth pulled......how will he hunt?!!?!

I tested Mr. Leo's BG at +11 and he was 58!! :o Grandma was cooking some chicken for supper and she fed Leo quite a bit of raw chicken in between his +11 and his PMPS, so that brought him up a few points, but he doesn't want to eat his supper!

Hi guys - YAY! Leo is sprung! Love the mouse story...  Good luck with Leo's dental - I am sure he will be fine. Sienne has some great info there. I need to get Mannie looked at too, I am sure there will be much complaining from him...

Honestly, after the experience I just had with Bandit's dental I don't think I'll ever rush to get one done again. His big issues are with tooth resorption, but in hindsight I wish I had waited because I think the whole ordeal would have been less traumatic if the teeth were a little bit further gone before they were pulled. The only reason why I wanted it done right away was because I was afraid his teeth would cause him to go out of remission, but then looked what happened. If dental problems aren't complicating his diabetic treatment (which to me it doesn't look like), then I think waiting a little bit is perfectly fine.

Leo will still be able to hunt with less teeth...Bandit caught a HUGE rat with just his lower canines left. He also decapitated one of his toy mice (that is filled with what appears to be concrete, I still have no idea how he did it), so he'll do just fine.
