Good morning,

Day 3 (+58) without insulin. Beautiful number this morning - 47!

One silly question - I was told that there are problems with accuracy in Fructosamine levels on cats taking Lantus. Looks like your kitties have their Fruc levels taken. Anything I need to know?

Hope everyone (and their kitties) have a good day today :)

Edit-Forgot to mention that I switched Jynx back to the FF, and he's back to eating without a problem. I had tried to give 50 Evo/50 FF last night, but he just picked at it. Figures! Just bought a case of Evo!

Re: 8/18 Jynx AMBG 47

fructosamine tests are for people who don't test at home. it measures about 2 weeks of the recent BG numbers and gives some sort of average.

everyone i've seen says it's a waste of money if you're hometesting. your own ss tells the same info and you've already paid for the tests.

and way to go jynx! looks like you might be on an OTJ trial! did someone give you directions for that yet? small frequent meals, test am/pm . . . and keep posting!

once a cat has been diabetic you must continue to feed them lowcarb foods.

Am I doing the correct things for an OTJ trial? I haven't changed his feeding times. He currently gets fed LC wet every 6 hrs (2 oz., 1 oz., 2 oz., 1 oz.), and I'm testing BID. I did give him a sm amount of chicken deli meat in the evening as a snack, since he didn't eat his full breakfast yesterday. I give him Purebite freeze dried chicken snacks occasionally. He also gets a Fortiflora packet daily, split among meals (to keep his tummy happy).

The vet will want a Fructosamine level soon. I'd also like to see his 2 week average, in case I'm missing anything throughout the day. I'll have Hematology class (for small animals) this fall, so guess I can run it myself ;-)

Re: 8/18 Jynx AMBG 47

sounds like you're doing everything just fine.

i don't understand why anyone would do the fructosamine when they're home testing - perhaps the vet could explain what s/he would learn that isn't obvious from the hometesting. of course there's no harm in doing it, just cost.

Re: 8/18 Jynx AMBG 47

Way to go Jynx!

You are dong just fine. Test 2 times a day, the times that would have been your PS times. AMBG, PMBG.

Regarding fructosamine testing - save your money...

Does your glucometer have a button to press for the 14 day avg??? there you go.

Re: 8/18 Jynx AMBG 47

One of the vets had told me that the glucometer does not give the actual value (for protection against overdose), during a separate conversation not related to the Fruc levels. I don't think that this sounds correct. Also, I think that I saw a posting here dispelling this myth. What are your thoughts?

Re: 8/18 Jynx AMBG 47

i think i'd save my money. my meter has a 7, 14 & 21 day average that it will give me for free . . . i think you already have the info you need.

Jynx is having difficulty having a bowel movement. He took a couple of bites of his dinner, and then went to the litter box. When I came in to check on him, he was scooting his butt to release a piece of stool - wet on outside, but hard. His rectum is protruding out slightly. I'm wondering if my poor baby is extremely constipated. It's only been a short time since he was taken off of the dry (W/D), and moved to wet (FF,Evo). I checked, and W/D has 2.2 grams of fiber, whereas FF has only 0.4 grams.

Am I thinking along the correct lines, I wonder. Has anyone had similar experiences? What can I give him to help out?

Fiber doesn't play as much of a role in a cat's much shorter GI tract. Are you adding water to his canned food? that always helps. You can also give him 1/8 to 1/4 tsp Miralax (found at any drugstore) mixed into his food. It draws extra water into the GI tract. If he gets impacted it could be a problem. This will at least give you a bump.

Hi guys - congrats on day three of trial - awesome!

Regarding fructosamine testing: I agree with Julie:

The miralax does help. as with Ann - at least this will give you a bump.

I don't currently add water to the wet food. How much would I add?

I'll call the vet tomorrow, but was wondering if there was anything I might be able to add to his food tonight.

Thank you.

Edit - I'll pick up some Miralax tomorrow, and give it a try. I'll prob still check with the vet, in case of an obstruction.

Re: Need advice, please 8/18 Jynx PMBG 57

Oh, just remembered reading about adding canned pumpkin to the wet food. Has anyone heard this?

Edit - Found it on the FAQs :)

"If you're feeding dry Science Diet W/D, any dry food with a similar fiber level will do the trick. If you're feeding canned Science Diet W/D, Science Diet Feline Light is similar, or you can feed any good quality canned cat food and add extra fiber in the form of psyllium (1/4 teaspoon mixed with 1 tablespoon water) or canned unsweetened pumpkin (1 tablespoon)."

Re: Need advice, please 8/18 Jynx PMBG 57

Oh well, thought it sounded like a good idea  He's not having it (strong willed, like all cats!!) That's why we love them. LOL

Re: Need advice, please 8/18 Jynx PMBG 57

if a cat is blocked, adding fiber may not be the best idea. adding water and miralax to his food is probably a better choice.

another thought...
if his rectum is protruding a little his anal sacs may need to be expressed.

Re: Need advice, please 8/18 Jynx PMBG 57

i add about 50% water to the canned food. i have sometimes added as much as equal amounts of water, but it truly does fill up the litter box!

i've just given a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (not pie filling, plain canned pumpkin) but punkin doesn't like it. many kitties do.

i've seen the recommendation on psyllium too - i think it was on dr lisa's site http://www.catinfo.org - that is a very good site. dr lisa is a vet and she does online consultations. several people here use her. take a look on there for other ideas.

Re: Need advice, please 8/18 Jynx PMBG 57

Thanks, everyone. I'll hold off, and just add water tonight, until I'm sure he doesn't have a blockage, or something else going on. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

I love this site. What a life saver, literally!!
