Phew on seeing some green this morning! She certainly had me feeling a little anxious with yesterday's "+3". Trix is very much in a Fancy Feast mood these days...we'll keep running with it until she tires of it, then we'll switch back to Purina One.

The trip to Penn for my Dad's second opinion yesterday went well, all things considered. We really liked this doctor, too, so now we have two very good oncologists on board. The best bit of news that came out if it was that she said this is absolutely NOT pancreatic cancer. I think that one scared us the most, as we lost a non-blood related relative to pancreatic cancer in the 80s, and it was horrific - not that any other cancer is good, either, but that experience left an unforgettable mark in our memories. This doc did confirm/agree with the local doc's diagnosis: my Dad has a very unusual case of 3 primary cancers...rectal, stomach, and prostate. He has some lymph node involvement, but no mets to other organs or bones. But, she still put him at Stage IV...I guess because of the multiple primaries, which make a "curative" approach pretty impossible - ie, he is not a candidate for surgery or radiation because of the multiple primaries. But, he will start chemo very soon (still waiting for the hospital to schedule the port installation). The other "good" bit of news is that she said this protocol is usually well-tolerated; it's good for both the rectal and stomach cancers (the prostate cancer is a non-issue); and that for some reason most older men don't get the nausea from this protocol. Like every other doctor out there, she cannot believe my Dad is almost 82 - his BW is near perfect, as is his "physical presentation"....he just does not look his age, inside or out. But, despite that, she did say that these cancers are really most likely the result of age. She also specializes in geriatrics, and she said it is important to not undertreat, just because of age - if someone is in great health like my Dad, there is no reason to not pursue a decent regimen. She was very kind and caring.

The other interesting thing: I've mentioned before my Dad has no symptoms at all, and that finding this was a fluke brought on by doing an MRI because his urologist was strongly urging him to do radiation for the prostate cancer. That MRI brought all this other stuff to light - it was a huge, completely unexpected shock. This doctor from Penn said the prostate cancer is absolutely not life-threatening and he shouldn't let anyone ever touch it in any way, because the benefits don't outweigh the risk. Yet my Dad was just about to do radiation for it at the urging of his urologist. Interesting twist of fate....

So that's where we're at. Hopefully he'll start chemo very soon, and with any luck and a lot of prayers, maybe this will become a thing of the past, despite the staging....

Thinking of everyone today...sending extra prayers out to Dyana and sweet J.D., and Liz and Anne and Zener.....

Amy

It looks like you and your family are going to be in excellent hands! It is great that you found an oncologist who specializes in geriatrics and takes the approach of not looking at age but your dad's overall health for how aggressive they should be with treatment.

Sending lots of vines and hugs and good thoughts to your entire family!

As for Ms. Trix, about time you let that green shine through lil lady! Let's keep those greens up!

Morning Amy ~O) ~O) ~O)

WooHOO! Look at that +3, Good job Trixie. Enjoy the lagoon today. Nice too on the fuds, eat well little one.

Continued positive thoughts, healthy vines, all of it, for your dad. I am very glad that you liked the new oncologist. Very nice that you feel you can trust the opinions given. Hugs to all there.

Have a great day today. I hope all goes well.

Nice start for Trixie! Woohoo! That is great news about your dad. Pancreatic cancer is a horrible one to get so it is a HUGE sigh of relief that that is not what he has. The prostate cancer is pretty common and very mild in most cases. I am so so glad you talked him into going to Penn and found a wonderful oncologist. Sounds like a great plan forward. ((((HUGS))))

Well done, Trixie! Great news from the oncologist, I'm glad you went. What a great team. :-D Thank you for your prayers for us. We're hanging in there. :-D :YMHUG:

I'm glad you are blessed with such good doctors and that there is no pancreatic cancer. I am sending vines to your dad, and to your family, that everything goes smoothly and you all can breath easier very soon.

Thank goodness for good doctors for your dad. It sounds like he is in the best of hands. I was nervous when pancreatic cancer was brought up and I think that it is not is the best of all possible outcomes from this visit. I'm sending prayers for the treatment to be easy on him and remission soon. The cure will be next but if not remission is realistic I would think.

:-D :-D :-D

Amy, this is such good news about your Dad. Thinking of him and wishing him success with the treatments.

Hugs, scritches. Trixie, keep up the good work!

that is all great news, amy. i know several people who lived years (like 9+) after being diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. So be hopeful! I too am celebrating the not-pancreatic cancer. that is a bad one. we've had 2 friends die with it and it's devastating.

Continuing to send all my best thoughts your way!

Thank you for all the support, everyone...my LL family is amazing!

I am currently feeling positive right now, too, after yesterday's visit. It's still scary, but we do have two good doctors...I have to admit I'm both amazed and impressed.

My FIL lived for 7 years with Stage IV melanoma after being given 2 months, so I truly do believe in miracles. I just have to keep reminding my parents of that, but I could tell at least my Mom felt a bit relieved after yesterday's visit. We have a long road ahead of us, but at least we feel like we're moving forward.

Amy,
I am glad the Penn appointment went well and that you got such a nice doctor.
Sending prayers to your Dad.

Hi, Amy, what a great WDR (Whole Dad Report)! :-D :-D :-D
I agree with others, it does sound like he's in GREAT hands.
Continuing to keep him in my thoughts ~ as well as you and your family :YMHUG:

Hey, TrixieGirl, nice numbers!! Keep up the good work!!

Hi Amy,

I am glad that you have a good feeling about the doctors. Let's keep hope up. We will continue to thank God for a full recovery for your day. That your dad's body responds quickly to the treatment.

I'm so very, very glad it is not pancreatic cancer. I've lost a good friend (young) and my uncle to it. It's scary stuff and one of those cancers that one is not likely to live long with although my friend had three years, most of it with a reasonable QOL. I'm so happy you found a great doctor! Dancing for you all today!!! Because your dad is so healthy otherwise, I hope that it will give him strength with the treatment.

I am so happy to read it's not pancreatic cancer, I lost a cousin to it last month. Little dancing going on here, as much as you can in such a situation. It sounds like a great doctor team and a good plan going forward. Lots of keep on keeping strong vines to your dad.

Way to go Trix. One less thing to worry about. :YMHUG:

I'm glad the Penn visit went well and it is not pancreatic cancer. It sounds like your dad has some great doctors to help him. Keeping your family in my prayers.

What a relief to have pancreatic cancer off the table. It is definitely the scariest kind. I have read about lots of studies saying that it's best not to treat prostate cancer in patients over 75 - it's very slow growing and they are most likely going to die of something else before it gets bad enough to kill them. QOL is more important in that case.

I'm excited that you have found yet another doctor that you all like and trust. You really hit the jackpot, I think, and I feel very optimistic about your dad's future. That he is in such good shape going in is a very big deal, I think. Sending lots and lots of good vines for him, and prayers all around. :YMHUG:

Little Miss Trixie, you are a very good girl to give your mama a pretty green number when she is so stressed. Keep up the good work, Missie!

Oh Amy, this is some great news in the sea of scariness. I am so happy that you all have 2 doctors that are competent and professional and informative. Sending more prayers of strength and healing!!!! Trixie, you look good, too! ;-)

Absolutely, Amy. This is good news. No mets is fantastic. No pancreatic cancer is beyond great.
Doctors you're comfortable with and trust, a plan in place. Now, prayers for treatment. Sending all the light I can muster that your dad has a great response and an easy time with any side effects.

Kind of a silly thing about the port. It's inserted right below the collar bone. Mine was put of the left side. Right where my seat belt rests. Wish they'd put it on the other side!

Trixie. You look marv-ah-lous in green. Wear it often.

What a relief about the pancreatic cancer! And so glad to hear the meeting with the Penn oncologist went so well! Trusting the doctor is half the battle, I am soooo glad the Penn doctor made that point about the prostate cancer and will be focusing on the right things! You, your dad and your family will continue to be in my prayers and I am continuing to send tons and tons of hope, healing and positive thinking vines! Amy, please remember to take time to take care of yourself as well, these are stressful times, hugs to you! Trixie is being such a good girl, that's also a big relief! :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
