Good morning LL
Muffin is feeling much better today. Thank you Libby for the info on the Metacam, I'll research it some more today. I'm not going to give her any more of it since she feels better, unless the vet says I should for some reason I don't know about. Matter of fact I'm going to go call them right now...brb.....Hmm Dr says give one more dose today - what do you all think? Putting it in my title. Also I took her dose back up to .75 this morning, and I'll be around most of the day for testing.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

You said that Muffin seems to be feeling better today, right? What are your thoughts about giving it to her today? There have been some reactions to that drug and well, as Libby said, she never heard of it being given just because a kitty doesn't feel well...
I hope someone else will post here...can you hold off giving it to her until you hear more about it?
how do you feel about that?

sorry for bumping yesterday's condo, but I don't see one for today yet. I asked about the Metacam because I haven't seen it used this way before, it's an anti-inflammatory and is sometimes used as a pain med for cats. It's a drug with some potentially serious side effects so I would do some research before giving it to her.

It has its place, like most drugs there are times when it is definitely indicated, but I haven't seen it used just for a cat that feels a little yucky.

An internet search will give you lots of information....have you read anything about that drug yourself yet?

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

I'm still feeling I don't want to give it to her, so I won't unless someone here convinces me otherwise. I really feel that sometimes our kitties are prescribed something just to make US feel like the vet is doing something for them.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

we've used metacam in the past for my late arthritic kitty Spazzie and we never had any problems with it. mind you, her kidneys were routinely checked to make sure they could handle it but like was mentioned, i've never seen it used just 'cause kitty was feeling yucky. if Muffin is feeling ok, i'd be hesitant to use it too really. i'm not around much so don't know if Muffin's kidneys were checked before doling out metacam or not?

i will also say i've been given it numerous times for other kitties for after surgery pain, i.e. spaying stray girls, but since their kidneys weren't checked first, i just shook my head yes to the vet and went home and used my stash of bupe instead. needless to say i think i have a few syringes of metacam still hanging out in my cabinets.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

Anne...MY sentiments exactly. Have you read any of the websites on it? If people on here are reluctant to say "that's great' when you talk about certain meds, then it is time to stop and think about it. And what Libby said about it would certainly make me stop and think...
I am glad she seems better today.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

Pat - she was feeling yucky yesterday after her vaccines the day before, and not wanting to eat, and her bg's were higher than normal, which I would've expected them to be lower since she wasn't eating. I called the vet really just to ask if the higher #'s could be due to vaccines and her not feeling well, and they told me to come get some metacam; that it should have her feeling better by today. She actually was feeling quite a bit better by last night whether from the metacam or just because she would have felt better by then anyway, I don't know.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

My vet thinks Convenia is a miracle drug too...and cannot understand my wanting to give oral ABs for 2 weeks while that drug is available. From being on this forum, those two drugs, Convenia and Metacam make my ears perk up...(getting more like my kitties everyday! YIPES!) :o So many bets prescribe both...and I wonder if the kitties would just be fine with nothing, but as you said, they prescribe something so the Beans will feel better.
My two go through days when their eating is off...then they are okay the next day. (with no drugs)
There have been cases where things go just fine with those 2 drugs. But then, there are other times with other kitties that things go very very badly. ECID, right? My personal thought is that I would rather not take those chances. But that is my personal opinion.
How is Muffin doing now?

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

Metacam has been associated with acute renal failure in cats. My vet was contemplating using it for pain and inflammation associated with Gabby's dental and I refused. Personally, I don't think it's worth the risk. There have been a couple of cats here, notably Carolyn's Latte, who almost died from Metacam administration.

This link on metcam has considerable information. Note that the strongly recommend that for vets prescribing Metacam, there needs to be a monitoring schedule for kidney and liver function.

Re: 8/14 Muffin amps 101 Metacam?

Ooh, thanks for the link Sienne. Muffin's doing great, I'm not going to give her any more Metacam. Thanks everyone for weighing in.

We carry Metacam and convenia where I work but my vets do not use either on a regular basis. Hope she keeps feeling better I myself would use metacam with extreme caution and I am a vet tech I myself would not use it for my cats I am a afraid of its side effects but this is JMO only. Great numbers for Muffin today
