Hi Everybody :-)

I gave him 1.0u this morning, based on .25u per kilo and trace ketone concerns. We managed another BG reading at +4 (444), and the number is higher than AMPS (442). Does this mean I did not successfully inject the insulin? Breathing deeply... steep learning curve!

Also, he is doing something new, peeing on the bed (and he is peeing large volumes!). This started yesterday. I slept only half a night last night, changing sheets and blankets, argh! But my only real concern is figuring out what the discomfort is that is making him do this.

Congrats on getting the +4 test. With respect to your question about the numbers, there is a 20% variance in any number due to the meter. Frankly, there really isn't any difference between a 442 and a 444 especially since you don't yet know where Reuben's nadir (low point in the cycle) is. Ideally, nadir is at +6. However, it can be earlier or later than the middle of the cycle. And just to make this whole adventure even more exciting, the nadir can change.

There are a couple of possibilities regarding outside the litter box behavior. Reuben could have a urinary tract infection (UTI). The only way to know this for sure is to have your vet do a urinalysis. The other possibility that immediately comes to mind is that it may be the result of the higher numbers. When cats are diabetic, two of the symptoms are polyruria (excessive urination) and polydipsia (excessive thirst/drinking). These are abbreviated PU/PD.

Thank you Jill :-)

I'll keep an eye on the urinary situation;

I have doubts about my injection technique. I`ll watch more videos.

Reuben gets so upset when I do the ear prick that he pees in the burrito towel, should I be worried about this?

I can`t find ketone measuring strips of any kind, anywhere (I`m in Mexico). Having them sent from the US would take weeks - if they even got here - and I need them Now. I bought some 6 weeks ago and had them sent and they haven`t arrived. I think I should start sub Q's, and at least he is getting antibiotics. (Clavamox - 5 mg twice a day.)

This noon and midnight injection schedule is horrible, how did this happen?!? yikes... Can I inject the insulin half an hour early next time with no problem? (If it's even going IN?)

Okay, day two was better than day one. yeay.

With Reuben's numbers this high, you could shift his shot time an hour early. You will need to monitor, though. Can you try to get a test during the PM cycle? With your current shot schedule, I'm guessing it will be hard.

What time do you want to shoot?

I think you mentioned there are strips that are used to measure a number of different things, ketones included. If you can find those, it's fine. Is there a pharmacist you could talk to? I'd even think about calling a hospital pharmacy and asking if there's a product that's available in Mexico that you can use. Ketostix is the name of a product manufactured by Bayer. There may be something similar that has a different name. If you ask if there's a consumer product that can be used to measure urinary ketones, a friendly pharmacist may be able to direct you to a similar product.

If it helps, here's what Ketostix look like:

Hope you find some, or an equivalent!
