not sure what that 305's about - started a new vial last night. maybe he got lower than usual during the night or something? i don't know.

he did make a great escape though. apparently my son left the downstairs slider open and he and anya got out. anya got recaptured while she was still on the deck, but punkin is an experienced sneaker-outer and knew to go fast. he went for an adventure for a couple of hours. that's the first time he's been outside in at least 2 years. the funny thing is that all i noticed this morning is that his hair looks better and more groomed. maybe he ran through a sprinkler while he was out!

clean plate club membership maintained for him and anya this morning. all is well.

Well again I've been MIA - but have so been thinking of both of you. So Mr Punkin sure can move yet! bcatrun_gif Not bad for a kitty with acro! yippee! oh wait - he wasn't supposed to get out but yet - he left Anya in the dust! :lol: Glad tho both are home safe and sound.

Thanks for visiting Champ's condo while I've been going through all this mess. When I feel impotent and unable to solve a problem, like getting a stubborn, sick boy-kitty to eat, it really throws me for a loop. He's doing so well with the insulin that if something else ends up getting him, I'm going to be inconsolable. It really does help having you give me words of encouragement and I really do appreciate you!!

Pink and orange? Not a good fashion statement Punkin! Hopefully it was just the excitement from the great escape. Tess is pretty silly about the whole thing. As soon as she gets out she flops down to roll on the pavement, pretty easy catch! :lol:

had a nice chat with Dr. Lunn at Colorado State University about the SRT that zaps the tumor on an acro cat's pituitary gland. i think for now, at least, we won't do it. she said it's especially helpful for cats who are getting enormous doses of insulin, or who can't get their cats regulated. she said it definitely improves the quality of life but it doesn't necessarily extend the lifespan. they haven't been doing it long enough to be certain about that, but she couldn't say that it would. she also said diabetic cats often have kidney troubles and it doesn't seem to prevent that. she said the average time after diagnosis til they die is 1.5-3 years, which would make punkin 15-17.5 - which is a pretty good life.

so . . . we're looking at a cat who is almost always between 100-200, who is currently getting 14 units BID (which while more than average is not out of the ballpark big) and who has an excellent quality of life, his complaining about the servants notwithstanding! :lol: i guess i'm not hearing a compelling reason to do it and she said it's perfectly acceptable to just treat with more insulin.

i feel a little better about it and think this is an ok decision.

now i think i'll go comb the wild man's fur!
 
I don't know why I didn't understand that the acro shortens their lifespan. I thought it just meant their type of diabetes would need lots of insulin and they will never go in remission. It sounds like Punkin is doing so well, though, so maybe he'll be an exception to the rule. I hope so anyway. I'm glad Punkin has you...
 
punkin is a lucky fellow to have such a loving home! Perhaps he visited the kitty bakery on his adventure and had a dozen catnip donuts!
 
Is punkin a grass muncher? i find that willie will have higher numbers after snacking on the grass in the back yard (a/k/a helping the bean mow the lawn).

i think your decision re: the tumor treatment sounds reasoned and wise. punkin is a lucky boy with a wonderful life. well, except for that bit about you starving him... :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
Glad you were able to talk to the specialist and support your decision 100%. QOL is what it us all about and I definitely don't think Punkin lacks in that area. :lol:

you made me feel better about not being able to treat Jazzy. :smile: Her QOL is good and I'm comfortable with treating whatever complications arise. If Punkin is happy and you're happy then all is well!
