Good Morning,

Question for the LL'ers, how long does hydromorphone last? That was the one question i forgot to ask the ER vet yesterday, i'm wondering if its ok to give Leo a shot of bupe right now. I looked online last night for hydromorphone dosing in cats but couldn't find much as to how long it lasts.

Leo did well last night, he ate quite a bit for me and i got up at 3 to check his BG and see if he wanted a bite to eat, he was hungry and on his way up BG wise. Looks like the half dose from last night has caught up with him.

He's still eating his breffis, purring all the while. I gave him 13 units this morning.

We had one heck of a storm here last night, lightening flashing and thunder rolling and Leo was busy snoozing on the couch. I did what Ella and Edward did the night before, running around closing windows.

I'm hoping for a good, peaceful day today for Leo, my little buddy has been thru so much lately and he deserves a break.

Sorry I can't answer your question, but I know that someone will be able to.

Leo, you take it easy today, eat your fuds, don't vomit, and concentrate on getting over this flare. KTSS will be along later to check up on you.

That's a good sign that Leo is purring and eating. :-D I don't know about the hydromorphone either. Happy Caturday!

Sheesh, sounds like you guys had the same weather as had last night - crazy storms!! Though it seems like you didn't have quite the amount of storm-induced antics :mrgreen: Lucky you!

I think the problem of duration with some of the narcotics is that duration is dose dependent. The larger the dose, the longer it lasts. Unlike other drugs where when the dose is larger, the effect is greater, that's not necessarily the case with bupe and related drugs. When Gabby has taken bupe, it's been a a BID dose.

Thanks everyone for stopping by with good healing thoughts for my Leo.

Yesterday Leo got 10mg of hydromorphone, they gave him a bigger dose to help sedate him a bit since he was not being a very nice kitty when they were examining him.

I think i'll give him a dose of bupe, i don't want him to be in any pain.

Well i watched Marje and Gus' video on how to give SubQ fluids and it was great! I just gave Leo about 50cc of fluids and he took it like a champ :-D He just sat that all nonchalant and didn't even flinch when i stuck that giant needle in.

Congrats on giving fluids! I remember the first time I did that. It makes giving insulin and blood testing seem simple by comparison.

Well Leo has had an alright day, he slept most of the day away. I gave fluids and a giant needle of cerenia that he didn't appreciate, I gave the first .10 mls of the cerenia as a fur shot, I got the other .80 mls into him! He went to sleep and I thought I'd join him. He woke me up meowing into my face......FEED ME, IM HUNGRY! :lol: he had some supper and I gave him 17 units, he's currently sleeping (again) on the step outside.

I've still got fingers crossed we don't have anymore barfing.

Fingers crossed for you too for no barfing! Sounds like he's feeling a little better. It's amazing how quickly you see a change w/ the fluids. I think of it as "flushing out the poisons" that get into their systems. Glad you had success!

More healing vines for Leo from his buddy!

On Friday, I had to give Mario his adequan shot with one of those giant needles, too (18 gauge needle, the equivalent of 25 units). He was not one of my fans after that... wouldn't even take the treats from me :sad: ...

Those Cerenia needles ARE huge. :shock: And the shots sting, :-x I've had to give those to Zener before. Now we have him on Cerenia pills, 1 mg every other day (1/4 of a pill). We order them online for not too much, lots cheaper than the injections and easier. You can give the pills if he's not vomiting. Sending vines to Leo.

@Anne and Liz, I've got some of the pills as well but I'm not sure if the dosage would be the same, I contemplated giving the pill today but wasn't sure. I had to laugh at the $3.60 worth of aggressiveness too, if he was more rotten would it be $7.20? Who gets this aggressive money? :lol: :lol:

Poor Mario getting those 18 gauge needles, I'm not sure how big the cerenia needle was but the fluids was a 22 gauge and it was bigger than the cerenia needle. Poor guy has gotten alot of needles today. What a trooper.

I have the impression that the 1 mg pill is the same as a shot but you should check with your vet on that. We would give him the Cerenia shot about an hour before his evening insulin shot because it seemed to kick in pretty quickly and he would want to eat at his shot. With the pill, it seems to have a few hours where he doesn't want to eat, then it kicks in and he's ready to eat. So we give him the pill at about +7 or +8. Today though, we both forgot and gave it to him about +11 and he's eating fine. Phew!

Yikes on that +5, i was not expecting that at all. He's been eating MC FF elegant medleys all night too, i have no HC or karo :shock: I forgot it at my parents house.

I found some Wellness Turkey and Chicken in the pouches, its got gravy in it so i'm hoping it'll bring him up. I have no idea what the carb content is in the Wellness.

I gave another shot of bupe a few hours ago as well.

Do you have any maple syrup or honey in the house?

I think I'm buying a case of gravy lovers FF while I'm down in the US. Lot's of gravy in it.

I have neither syrup or honey! :shock: I can run to the store if i need to, there is a 24 hour grocery store close by.

I've got a few of those wellness pouches, i'll test in an hour and see if the wellness brought him up.

Hi Tracy

If you heat up some water and add *lots* of sugar and simmer for a bit, you also get a syrup of sorts - might be an alternative? Can you get a follow-up BG test on this? That's quite a dive!

Ok, just ran to the grocery store for some HC FF and a bottle of karo. I gave Leo a half a can and a nice dollop of karo. I really hope he decides to come up.

Thanks for being here for me Jane, i used to be an old pro at these kinds of numbers, but not since Leo was dx as an acrocat and never while he's been on 17.00 units of juice!

I've got plenty of strips, no worries there. He's still asking for food, which is a good thing!

Wooowee he came up!! and fast too, i only fed him 15 minutes ago.

The syringes i have go up to 30 units in a single syringe, i hope Leo never gets to the point where he needs 2 syringes of insulin!

He is a very special kitty, he's quite the character!

I was thinking i'd get a +7.5, its only 20 minutes from now.

I love how cats can keep surprising us even when we've known them for years! Of course, BG-surprises can be just a taaad scary! But others are just priceless. The other day Magpie, our tuxedo girl who was very badly abused before she came to us and was terrified for a very long time of everything but me and DH, and who still remains extremely wary of strangers - well, she walked right up to the friend of iurs who's visiting us from Germany at the moment, chirruped at her and asked for a treat. I was flummoxed and delighted :smile:
