8/10 OT Seresto flea/tick collar warning

I know some of you live in areas of the country where you need to stay on top of fleas and ticks. You might find this information and the petition to the EPA about Seresto flea/tick collars beneficial. Sounds like it needs to be avoided.
I don't believe it is just the Seresto collars. My cat has a reaction to all of the flea control products. This includes Revolution, Advantage, Frontline, etc. Phoenix starts panting and has fast respiration and heartbeats for up to 18 hours after applying. The symptoms start about 3 to 4 hours after applying.
You really need to monitor your pet closely the day you apply it.

I would love to be able to use these products but I don't want to lose my cat. Another thought is how many of us would use a pesticide on ourselves especially when it goes throughout our system?

I agree with you, Susan. Thankfully, we don’t have any fleas or ticks here and my cats are completely indoors. But I do know other members use some of these products.

The fleas are terrible here around Dallas. It is hot and humid. The only thing I found that really works is olive oil. I comb it through Phoenix's fur like guys used to do with Brylcreem back in the olden days. It suffocates the fleas or they jump off. I don't saturate him. Like they used to say, a little dab will do you. My vet approved my using olive oil and Phoenix loves the taste. It also makes his fur soft and silky like when us women have a hot oil treatment on our hair.

Thanks for the tip from Dallas re: olive oil. I do not need to use anything on Cali as she is 99% indoor now. However we recently rescued our neighbor’s outdoor cat who climbed 25, up our black walnut tree and stayed/cried to us for 3 days until he came down. We had owner, called fire dept, tree guys, and finally a private rescue. That guy was enroute when TUX came down and claimed our home as his. He refuses to go home. So...we need flea protection for him [or me ]. I actually use the bonfire BAYER Seresto large dog collars for tick control for my horses. I called the manufacturer R&D about these collars for off label use and possibility of making a longer one for horses. TICKS carry deadly diseases in addition to the familiar LYME disease. These collars proclaim 8 months usage and they worked without any ill effects on my older horses. However I will find alternative solution for my visiting kitty. Incidentally do the cats lick the olive oil off of themselves?

Yes, they will lick the olive oil a little bit. My cat loves it. Here is how I apply it. First, I brush Phoenix with a flea comb to remove any fleas. Then, I dip the flea comb in the olive oil and brush it through his fur. I usually only treat the area where I see fleas. I put in on his head, chin, cheeks, down his back and on his tail.
You should be able to see the olive oil kind clumping his fur together. Then, I get my slicker brush with the very fine bristles and brush him all over. This works the olive oil into his fur and your cat will not be able to lick much of it off.

I do use a flea comb once a day when he comes inside for the night. Usually, I will only find a flea or two that might have jumped on him. Usually, they are already dying. I put the olive oil on as needed. If I find a little flea debris, I will apply olive oil only to that area. Your cat's fur will become very soft and silky. I know it sounds like a lot of trouble, but it really only takes a few minutes every day.

Also, I keep a small bowl of the olive oil in the refrigerator and use it until it is all gone. The cold partially solidifies the olive oil and makes it easy to spread on Phoenix's fur. Please keep this inside a zip lock freezer bag or an airtight container because it will get flea debris in it.

I can't spray my yard for fleas. Phoenix came down with pancreatititis about 2 years ago and the vet recommends not spraying. It never worked when I sprayed anyway. I live on five acres and there are always cats, possums, ducks and other wildlife on my property.

You will be surprised how well the olive oil works. Good luck with both of your kitties and have a nice day.

Thank you so much for that information and especially detail. Sounds perfect and this outdoor “visitor” begs to be loved and groomed. Any type olive oil I should not use? [rachael ray always said EVOO on cooking shows].

best of luck to you and Phoenix also in your sugar journey.‍⬛

Sounds right. Years ago my daughter brought home head lice. We did the same on us and went on vacation. Killed the critters & eggs on us & by the time we returned, all were gone. THANKS!

I use EVOO as well but I think any olive oil would work. I wouldn't use the flavored ones, though.
