75 blood sugar read. too low?

Sophia is diet controlled /FF/ and when I told the vet this morning that she was 75 on my people meter he said that was a little low. I was so glad and now I am concerned.

She had a blood test at the vet and we will find out how much it is there,,,,, she... like always... behaved like a crazy cat /they know her as the cat from hell/ and the vet said that she was full of spit and fire....

He also said that her heart and lung sounded good and he was amazed because she has hyper-t too.

Do you think 75 is too low??

I have no idea why your vet would say that 75 is too low... you are saying that Sophia is receiving no insulin, correct?

Maybe ask your vet how come my civvie, Booboo, has tested usually around 42 - 58. And just so you know, my Booboo is also CRAZY but healthy.

No. That 75 is a TERRIFIC number.... big pats for your Sophia.
 
Normal range is 40 to 120-ish, same as for people. Perhaps he needs to review!
 
This is possibly a case of the vet not realizing that people meters used on cats will generally read lower than the lab tests. Somewhere around 80 is the low end of the normal range on a lab test.

Using a people meter, 75 is great for your cat.
 
Usual range for cats is 64 to 170 and for dogs is 70 to 138, humans, 82 - 110 and up to 140 after food.
Maybe the vet is thinking that the human meter is reading cat blood like human blood? Surely not!
 
Thank you. I am glad to see that little Sophia is OK.. My vet says starting 80 is normal.. but it looks like he is not quite informed anymore... now I am waiting for the big test with all the nos and will inform you.

Be sure to get a copy of the test results, all the numbers, so you can look up the values for yourself instead of trusting your vet's interpretation.
Even if your vet is right about something, it's good to have copies of results at home so you can compare the new numbers with the old numbers.... you can see what ones have improved or worsened.

The normal reference values can also vary from lab to lab, so his claim that 80 is the low normal value could still be accurate. My money is on this being another case of the vet trying to apply his labs reference values to the numbers from the human glucometer. I know my vet was initially very uncomfortable with the 'low' numbers I was getting until I showed her the values to aim for with a human glucometer.


Getting a copy of the blood results is a great idea. The blood report should also list the labs reference values.
