Good morning! Hoping to hear from the vet soon with the lab results. Im working today, so I will update tonight with info. Chi Chi left a healthy poop in the lb this morning, so that usually means lower numbers. Mom is still dealing with her hiding issues though, so she may or may not get many test today. Have a great day everyone, and continued thanks for the vines for me and Chi Chi:bighug:

Good news! The vet called today with the lab results and she said looking at the results you would never guess she is 14 years old..everything looks good. Her kidney numbers are all normal, so she is good to go on the dental and the mass removal at the same time. She still suggest skipping the xrays which will knock off about 30 min from the total time under anesthesia, so she can get as much cleaning , extractions etc. done in as litle as possible time. I asked her about what she is using, and she said probably propofol, and isoflurane. She discussed in great detail about how she will monitor her. She wants to put a bp cuff on her, and with some kitties it doesnt fit snug enough and keeps setting the alarm off, but since Chi Chi is a big girl, she thinks it might stay on. If not, she said she will have the doppler ready to check her intermittently. She said not to give any insulin in the am, and she will check her bg during and after. She doesnt want to have to worry about a glucose drip in the midst of everything else. She also said I should not pick up her water bowl after midnight, as the original instructions were. She wont be doing the surgery til later anyway, and wants to make sure she gets water if she needs it during the night before. She did say she would start earlier if possible(1pm is the time slot for her) to allow her to monitor her recovery afterward longer. They only block so much time for each surgery, but she feels like thats not going to be an issue, and so far we are the only one on her schedule. But it is a week away, so Im sure that will change! We spoke for about 20 minutes or so, and I feel reassured about it all now. Also, she wants to get a urine test(cant remember which one) to rule out any UTI, since sometimes they can be asymptomatic(sp?), and she hasnt had one since Sept. She wants to give her the best chance to go OTJ as possible, by eliminating any infection and pain. Ok..that was long! Thanks Amy and Elise:)

Isoflorane is what you want her to use. For induction I guess she uses propofol for induction and I don't know anything about that. It's good she will monitor BP and she also needs to be kept warm. It sounds like she is in very good hands. Congrats on the great bw. That is a relief.

My vets use propofol or alfaxalone for induction. Lots of members recommend alfaxalone as it seems to be more gentle and less harsh on BGs, but it isn't used as widely in the US. I spoke with a friend who is about to start her clinical year after vet school, she has experience with both and said it's always seemed that propofol and alfaxalone have similar actions and both are used on patients that may be higher risk for that reason. She made me feel more secure that propofol is an excellent option if the vet chooses it over alfaxalone--I figure, you want the vet to use what they're used to using!

ETA: How often can I say different variations of "use" in one sentence? Hah! I wanted to add in a three-cheers for good bloodwork vines! Glad that ChiChi can get everything done!

I missed your other posts, so sorry you had such a scare with ChiChi but it is great to see those labs and there is a plan to handle the problem. Sending tons of vines for the both of you, prayers for her dental!

I am loving this vetty report! Sounds like pretty awesome news all around :)

Sending many many dental and mass removal vines to you and Chi Chi....I will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers!

Ummmm..... You really want pre- and post-dental x-rays. There is no way to know if there's anything going on below the gum line (pre) and if there are extractions, x-rays are the only way to insure there's no remnant of a tooth remaining. Please take a look at the post on dentals.
