Please keep Claudia and Rocket and all the other kitties in LL that are sick in your thoughts and prayers today.

Simon's AMPS is much better than yesterday's number. His tummy is feeling better and he is back on the Wellness chicken and turkey (no more fish for him!).

I have a question about my civvie, Cleo. When we started with the wet food diet in November of 2010 when Simon was diagnosed with FD, she weighed a little over 19 pounds. She is now down to 14 pounds. I am worried that this might be too much weight to lose in 7 months. Before November, all she would really eat is dry kibble. She is now more active and comes out from under the bed. Before, she wouldn't leave the bedroom. Now I can find her all over the house. The only problem is that she is drinking more water. I have tested her BG and it is normal (usually in the low 70's). Is the weight loss something to worry about? Can drinking more water be a sign of something else? I do need to get her in for a senior blood panel (she is 13 years old). Any advice is welcome!

Glad to see Simon is good numbers and no tummy upset, YAY!

Not sure what to say about your civvie. You should ask your vet what her ideal weight should be for her breed/size. Fingers and paws crossed she is fine.

Hi Georgia

I'd say the weight loss could be partly the food switch.. was the kibble hi-carb and
not one of the few locarb dry ones?

But the drinking more on wet food sends up a flag combined with the weight loss. I'd get Cleo
checked for hyperthyroidism, which is included in the senior panel. Drinking/peeing more and losing
weight (is she hungrier too?) are very common HT symptoms. Good luck!

That is a lot of weight but I expect she's fine. The water is a clue and you should get proactive blood work done for sure to make sure - I'd want to make sure the kidneys are okay. No vomiting/frothy or clear?

Cleo was eating dry kibble that was high in cards so the switch to wet food definitely would make a difference. I am concerned about the drinking water and don't know anything about hyperthryroidism so will check it out. I'm going to make an appointment to get blood work done. Thanks for the help!

Morning Georgia - I would agree with the others. I would expect the weight loss with the food switch (my civvie did the same). The more water intake could be indicative of something else. I too would have the BW done.That should tell you if there is anything else going on. Good luck!

Yes I also am in agreement with the others I think its the food switch but would get a senior bW panel just to make sure all is ok

I ended up taking Cleo to the vet this afternoon to get a check-up. Vet agreed that she needed a senior blood panel done to check her kidneys and other things. Also did a urinalysis. Results will probably be back on Tues. Cleo did have some dermatitis around her mouth and nose. The vet asked if she eats out of a plastic bowl. He said that plastic often causes skin irritation and to pick a ceramic or stainless steel bowl or he even feeds his cats on a paper plate. I didn't realize that is a problem and I have been feeding Cleo and Simon out of plastic bowls for a long time. I am switching immediately and throwing those bowls out. Cleo also has some ear allergies and is now on Zymox (with the steroid since she doesn't have diabetes). Cleo was the perfect patient even when they had to stick her 3 times.

Simon is doing great tonight and is a nice green number. He even was nice to Cleo when she came back from the vet. Only one hiss and then he was fine.

What a lovely PMPS # Simon! I'm also happy to hear that his tummy is feeling much better today :-D .
I'm glad that Cleo was the perfect patient today and I wish you nothing but good news when the panel comes back next week.. My kiddos only get ceramic or metal bowls, although I had no idea that plastic would do that either. I'm glad you found out now. I hope the dermatitis heals quickly. Your kitties are very lucky to have a bean that loves them so much :-D ;-)

Nice AMPS and PMPS for Simon.......fingers crossed that all of Cleo's tests come back normal.

Plastic is definitely problematic for all sorts of reasons...glad you guys made the switch! We always use ceramic, so we can microwave the bowls.

Lovely numbers for Simon today, and positive thoughts for Cleo's BW results!!!
 
Hi guys - what a nice cycle tonight for Simon! Love all that green!

I hope all Cleo's tests come back with great results. Positive thoughts for your girl! Isn't it great when they are model patients while at the vet? I too have heard that plastic bowls can cause all sorts of problems... And I've been using them for years... guess I too should find better ones!
