These are terrible numbers for Charms. ( Especially after yesterdays ) Possibly he ate some of the other cats food - Epigen. I keep the dish covered when I am outside, but when I came in today, the cover had been knocked off and all the food was gone! The Epigen is very low carb, so could this have affected his numbers this badly? He was very, very energetic this morning, Purred me awake at 3:30am and then again at 5:00. Please let me know what you think about todays numbers . Is this normal?
I think I am supposed to raise by .5 in the morning, but please let me know for sure. Thank You - Sam

So you're thinking that Charms is going to be consistent? You are forgetting the single best explanation for just about everything: He's a cat! They are inherently unpredictable.

The dry food may be contributing. I don't know the carb count on Epigen. I think it's probably higher in carbs than you think
Ingredients: Organic Chicken, Chicken Meal, Chicken Giblets, Vegetable Protein (consisting of one or more of the following: Potato Protein, Rice Protein, Corn Protein, Wheat Protein), Poultry Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols as a source of Vitamin E), Eggs, Yogurt, Flax Seed, Apple, Beet Pulp, Plums, Inulin, Dried Wheat Grass Powder, Dried Barley Grass Powder, Krill Oil, Dried Kelp, Taurine, Oregano Extract, Sage Extract, Rosemary Extract, etc.
I don't know if the grass products are considered carbs or not. The items that I bolded are all carbs. Based on the guaranteed analysis (which is not completely accurate -- you need "as fed" values), this is at least 13% carbs.

When I switched my other cats to Epigen , in case Charms did sneak some, I emailed the company and asked the carb content and this is their reply :
" Good Day,
Thank you for your recent e-mail.
Other than meat and organ glycogen and plant fibers, there is no carbohydrate in Epigen™. There are no starch ingredients as in all other dry diets.
Wishing you and yours the best of health,
Jenni

What do you think of that reply and what does it mean as far as carbohydrate content ?

Sam

I think you need to call them and ask them for the "as-fed" or "dry matter basis" values for:

carbs
fat
protein
ash
water/moisture
fiber

Alot of times, they can give you all but the carbs. If they do not give you carbs, you add all the rest together and then subtract from 100. Whatever is left over from 100 are the carbs. THEN you have to put the carbs, fat, and protein numbers into the calculator below that will tell you the real % calories from carbs.

Thank you for the info. Without the ash content, I calculated the carbs at 13.7%. That seems very high , since this is advertised as starch free, and no carbs. I think someone else advised me that it was higher than I thought , I will have to go back and reread some of my posts.
