Hi LL,

I've had a little bit of flu and have been feeling sorry for myself instead of writing to you all. Angie has mostly been doing well but I was a bit disappointed about her pmps last night.

Our last condo, from two days ago, is here.

RECAP

Saturday:
amps=99
+3=67
+4=79
pmps=113 (moved forward 1/2 hour)
+3.5=76

Sunday:
amps=86
+3=70
+4=77
pmps=142 (moved forward 1/2 hour) :sad: She had been under 120 for 10 cycles even with a skip and I was getting hopeful.+3=72
+4=83

Today (Monday):
amps=103
+4=74

Angie had 4 glucosamine injections (Synovan) at weekly intervals over the last four Saturdays. I've just found some research that glucosamine is linked to increasing insulin resistance.

This article found an increase in insulin resistance in rat cells: Rossetti et al, 1995,
This article found an increase in insulin resistance in rats given glucosamine: Marshall et al, 1991
This one found an increase in insulin resistance in humans with known blood sugar regulation issues: Pham et al, 2007.
This one did not find a significant increase in non-diabetic humans: Yu et al, 2003

Has anyone researched this further? Has anyone seen an increased need for insulin after long-term glucosamine supplementation?

My thoughts are with sick kitties and worried beans.

Grace

Re: 7/8 Angie amps=103 +4=74 glucosamine and insulin resista

Hi Grace

Sending you healing vines. I did not get a chance to look at the studies yet but will try tomorrow. I am not aware of a connection between insulin resistance and glucosamine. I will have to read the studies.

You can also PM Jill and see if she knows anything about it.

Right now Angie's numbers do not look to me like there is any insulin resistance going on. If there were, you see high, flat numbers.

Hope you fee, better soon! Hugs!

Re: 7/8 Angie amps=103 +4=74 glucosamine and insulin resista

Marje - thanks again. I didn't think that Angie has insulin resistance - she's doing well on 0.1 units. I just was wondering how much of an issue glucosamine is and if there is a better option?

I also just remembered that I wasn't home for her meal prior to her higher pmps and when I got home. At dinner that night Jezin managed to eat her dinner and his by pushing her away from her bowl. She may not have got her pre-pmps snack to bring her numbers down.

Re: 7/8 Angie pmps=131 glucosamine and insulin resistance?

in response to grace's PM:

yes, i have heard of a possible link between glucosamine and increased insulin resistance in cats. however, i have not read anything conclusive (for cats).

that said, i have noticed a slight rise in alex's numbers when i give her cosequin. to help with that i divide her dose... giving her half the dose at amps and half at pmps times. cosequin is also one of the supplements that i'll give for 2 months and then withhold for one month... in case there's anything to this link between glucosamine and increased insulin resistance, but i may be over-reacting.

most caregivers who give cosequin to their kitties do not report any noticeable difference/increase in their kitty's blood glucose levels.

fwiw, i agree with marje. i'm not seeing insulin resistance on angie's spreadsheet.

Re: 7/8 Angie pmps=131 glucosamine and insulin resistance?

Thanks very much Jill.

I thought diabetes was insulin resistance and the pancreas had to produce more insulin to keep up. Is it also underproduction of insulin?

Re: 7/8 Angie pmps=131 +3=88

Thanks Jill. That was a great article. I try to read scientific articles - but don't end up understanding everything! :-D
