Glad to see Jude is back down in the lagoon!

Hope everyone has had a good Tuesday!!

The air conditioning salesman came today to give me some bids on new heat pump units. They give me three: "economy," "good," "better." Economy=$7K; Good=$11K; Better=$14K 🤯😵‍💫 And that's for a relatively small home. I've decided to opt for the repairs and cross fingers and all five cats' paws that we'll be able to eek out a year or two more with this unit.

HVAC pricing is ridiculous  They know how much of a necessity it is here in the south. I'm fortunate to have family in the business and have learned to fix much of it myself. Anything wrong with the current system or just getting older?

It's older and is needing some repairs. I posted about it yesterday.

The item I mention in yesterday's post that is "impacted" with cat hair is the evaporative coil. They will need to remove it to clean. There are some other items that need repair as well, all to the tune of $1700.
Oh jeez Mary. I’m sorry to hear about all the expense and stress over the cat hair issue on your system.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
I hope they can do the repairs and your system will survive for a while longer 🫂🐾😻

Thanks, Staci! Yearly maintenance is apparently the key with a lot of cat hair in the house.

Unfortunately I think you’re right.
Even with a maintenance contract, it seems we are always having work done.
But it does help.
We have an HVAC contract as well as one with our plumber.
And both of them seem to be here for one reason or another a few times a year.
Sigh, the “joys” of homeownership.
We have had to replace our AC system 2 times in 20 years 😱

Two times in 20 years--that's a lot. As expensive as they are, you think that they'd last longer. It seems that's the way it is with a lot of big ticket items for the home. I can't remember now how many appliances I've replaced in the last fourteen years of living at my house. At least four refrigerators. Three stoves. Three dishwashers. Three microwaves. Two washers and dryers. One thing I'll share with you that I learned about new ac units, and I learned this from someone who teaches HVAC technology at our local technical college, is that the newer units are using a new type of refrigerant, and the guy told me that they are having a lot of problems with that refrigerant: it's not working well in the units, it's expensive, and it's in short supply. He's the one who recommended that I repair the old unit rather than purchase a new one. He said if it were him, he'd wait until they get the kinks ironed out with this new refrigerant issue.
