I couldn't get a test after pmps last night as she went hiding again. I really think something else is going on here, because she has never hid like this before. I think she is in pain, but yet her numbers dont seem to be reflecting it. She still hasnt had any yellows in a long time. We are going to vet today, so hopefully we get some answers. I hope they are able to find out what the small bump is on her lip, which could be causing pain. She ate good this morning however, and I did add fortiflora to help her eat. In other news..civie and drooler have thrown up a few times since yesterday. Civie Putter has a sensitive tummy, and drooler threw up water mostly after drinking about a half bowl this am. Im off of course today, and will try to get a +3 and +5 before we leave today.

Back from vet. She has a melanoma that has to come off. She also has gingivitis and needs at least 3 extractions, one is pretty bad. The growth on her bottom lip isnt a worry and she said its a ceruminous cyst. She aspirated it and it drained, but might come back. The melanoma is in the right inguinal area(groin), and is 1cm. At first she wasnt too worried about it, once she confirmed it wasnt mammary related, and said that if it were a dog, it would mean a problem, but after consulting her medical journal she said that she was wrong, and that cats can have the same issue and could be serious. She aspirated it and studied the slide for a long time before deciding it had to come off soon. Once we decided to remove it and set a date, she looked at her labs from April, and decided to draw more blood for more labs, to see if her kidneys are better or worse. If worse, then she doesnt want to subject her to the additional time needed for a dental(combo). The mass removal would take 30 min. but adding the dental would mean another 90 min. If we skipped the x-ray, that would shave off 30 min. She will get the lab results tomorrow and let me know if she thinks we should just do the removal, and that 1 extraction and some cleaning, which would make a big difference, and probably help her bg numbers. If her kidneys are ok, then we will do a full dental and removal of mass. She just doesnt want to risk not being able to keep her warm, etc. for an extended length of time. Her appointment is for next Friday, regardless of combo or not..the mass has to go. Im going to take Friday and Saturday, and maybe Sunday too, so I can be here to monitor her. She also said I can probably skip her insulin that morning, but her numbers will rise, but shes not too concerned, given her lower numbers the past 2 months. Oh..and after all that prodding and sticking today, her bg was 252 when she got home.

Sending all my healing thoughts to Chi Chi. I hope the melanoma hasn't spread.

Skipping the insulin in the morning is fine - that's typical with a dental, or any other occasion where there will be anesthesia. Anesthesia can lower blood sugar significantly, and you will likely end up skipping that night as well.

There is a good link about dentals in the New to the Group sticky, bottom section of single topic links. Dentals can make a huge difference in regulation if there are problems, which it sounds like there are. Has she had a dental before?

No Julie, she hasnt. The vet also thinks she will probably do even better afterwards. She is pretty optimistic about the mass not being malignant. She said at first that she didnt think I should give her anymore insulin, but I know better..I told her she goes higher without it. Ill read the sticky. Thanks

@tiffmaxee I will ask her about what she uses tomorrow when she calls me. Is there anything I should ask for or refuse? I know when she did my dog Mistys surgery I asked about isoflurane, and she said they didnt use it, but the one they use is similar. That was awhile back though and maybe they have it. I know there is some controversy about ketomine.

Paws crossed for good b/w results and the green light for surgery. :bighug: For Neko's last dental, the physical showed only tartar but it wasn't until the X-rays that a dissolved root and abscess down to the jawline was discovered. Dental X-rays show so much more. I hope the vet will have time to fit those into the operation time. One of the newer (in the US) anesthesia induction drugs is alfaxolone, which is what Neko had. It's been in usage in Canada and Europe for a while, and seems to be gentler on the kitties.

Thanks for the vines and well wishes Liz, Lori, Amy, Elise, Julie ,Wendy, Rhiannon and Tricia! Wendy, it all depends on her lab results tomorrow as to whether she gets x-ray. We can hope that a cleaning and the one extraction will be enough for now if not, and not need another dental down the road. But for now we are being cautious and prioritizing.. just need to have that mass removed first. She said that Chi Chi has some resorptive lesions., and/or periodontal disease. That's gotta be painful I would imagine. Tricia, Im trying to stay positive, and the Dr. didn't seem too worried, so that helps. Maybe she is just trying not to worry me?

Oh my, Laura. Just checking in. Several of my work dogs have had melanomas removed. No problems with them. I send so many buckets of wishes the same hold true for Chi Chi. And lots of light the b/w give the green light for her dental.
