Re: 7/5 Jinx AMPS 412, +3 366

Hi Joe

I see Jinx is bouncing from his lows night before last. I think you should let him clear the bounce and if he doesn't come down, take his dose back up. You'll know he's clearing if he gets down into low yellow, blue, or green. If he only goes to blue, then he needs to have his dose go back up. You can always ask for one of us to look and see if it's a good idea to take him back up if he clears and you aren't sure.

You and I are in the same boat right now; Gracie gave me a hint that she was clearing a bounce just like Jinx did for you the night before last. Gracie's cycles are different than Jinx's since he is on lantus but
when Jinx's +2 was so much less than his PS on the night of Jul 3, I wouldn't have waited until +5 to get another test. I probably would have checked him at +3 or +3.5 to see how fast the drop was continuing.

Likewise, when Gracie was dropping on me yesterday, we should have checked her earlier but we got our wires crossed as to who was doing what (bad beans).

Hopefully, he'll come down tonight.

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173

Really appreciate the advice, Marje. And I really regretted not checking him sooner that night considering his drop at +2. I won't do that again.

Well, he sure surprised me with his PMPS tonight. He definitely throws me some curve balls. Will check him at +1.5 just in case. Thanks again for the help and I hope Gracie and company are doing well!

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235

Wasn't expecting 235 at +1.5. I'm hoping he didn't go real low today. I know it's probably hard to say but I'd appreciate any thoughts on that. If I can't leave the house with a +3 at 366 then I'm in trouble...

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235

That could just be a food spike. Some cats get a pretty good spike so it's possible he might come back down...but hopefully not so fast.

Was the +3 right before you left and did you do an in the door test? It's usually a good idea to get a test right before you leave and as soon as you walk in even if you'll be testing again in an hour.

How is Jinx doing? Are you still giving him fluids, bupe, ondansetron? Is he sting his normal diet?

Mike and I have been working on a very detailed video on how to do subqs at home. We are making it mostly for FDMB members but hope it will help anyone who needs it.

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235, +3 252

The +3 was right before I left but I didn't test him when I came in. This unpredictability concerns me because when I go back to work, I'll only be able to get +2's and then nothing until 9 hours later.

Jinx is doing really well. His appetite is good and he seems happy. And I'm still giving him the bupe and the ondansetron. I was really concerned that I couldn't find the sub-q bolus so I didn't give him fluids again until today. But I got the scale in today and weighed him before and after fluids so I'll weigh him around the same time tomorrow to try to get a better indication of whether he's absorbed all the fluids. I gave him 100mL tonight and I don't feel a bolus. Although, he only likes to be touched or petted when he wants to so it's not very easy to check.

Can't remember if I asked this before but do you think it's pretty safe to give him 100mL every other day? Provided I may not be 100% certain he's absorbed all the fluids. I do think he needs at least every other day because his poo today was like petrified wood. Initially, I thought it could be the metronidazole but I think there's a better chance he's dehydrated.

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235, +3 252

Well gosh..headed back up! This is what I was wanting you to look for....bounces that clef but don't quite get him where he needs to be.

Typically, if a cat is dehydrated, it's best to give fluids daily, if possible.

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235, +3 252

I take that back... I'm pretty sure I feel the bolus. Should it feel like a small bump/mound? Not real pronounced but you definitely notice it's there?

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235, +3 252

In that case, I don't feel anything squishy. I'll keep checking though. If I'm not certain that he's absorbed all the fluids, is it always best to err on the side of caution and not give him any? How serious is a fluid overdose?

And as far as him clearing his bounce but not getting to where to needs to be... Do you recommend a dosecrease in the morning? Thanks again for everything, Marje. Hope you get some rest tonight.

Re: 7/5 Jinx PMPS 173, +1.5 235, +3 252

You can over hydrate a cat and it can be serious if there are any underlying heart issues so if you are in doubt, do it EOD.

If he doesn't do much of anything else tonight and gives you a high PS, I'd take him back up...but prepared that he'll come back down fast at some point and may not be on the higher dose long.

Ok..I'm off to bed so I can get up in a bit with grace.

Do I ever understand that! *LOL*

Every time I think I have figured out a Pumbaa-pattern, he changes direction, like a quarterback who was fed the defensive patterns of the opposing team.

As I have been reminded time and time again, this is a dance, not a marathon. And the FD kitties are leading the dance, and it is up to us humans to figure them out and follow their steps, while at the same time, we are trying to predict their steps (with our charts and our insulin doses). Insane, isn't it?

Hang in there, Joe. You aren't alone in your confusion!
