Good morning!

Well, we tried a combo of foods this morning to see what she prefers. She definitely does not want the Chicken/Herring, nor the Beef. She did eat the Tuna (Friskies 6%) and after dumping the other stuff, I gave her .80oz of 3% Turkey and Giblets and she ate most of it.

My worry for today: I made an appointment for her today to have her anal sacs emptied. Shortly after making the appointment, I get a call telling me that Shasta has a "Sedate" sticker on her file. I told the lady that I did not want her sedated for a 20 second procedure...not with her heart problems. Shasta has had her sacs emptied a few times before (I had to scruff her) and yeah, she wasn't nice (who would be?) but the previous vet got the job done without sedating her. I feel that this new vet does not have Shasta's best interest in mind, and while I know she's looking out for her safety and her staff's safety, come on honey...squeeze her sacs and let us go home. :YMSIGH:

Wish us luck! ~Deborah & the very unsuspecting Shasta

Re: 7/30 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219

Oh dear, poor Shasta. Good luck with that today.

Seems like you really don't want to go either, you've made it yesterday in your subject line

Re: 7/30 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219

hahaha...dang it! I really don't want it to be today...I start back to work tomorrow...haha!!! Ok, it's fixed!!!

Thank you!

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219

Good luck today, Deborah - i hope they can help Shasta with her anal glands without having to sedate her, and that you'll have some extra special treats for the poor dear when you get back home! I'll be sending calming vines!

Thank you, Jane! We need all the help we can get! Hope you have a great day/night!!

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219; +2=163

One thought you can share with the vet is to use an Elizabethan collar (one of those cone things) if the vet is afraid that Shasta will bite. For future reference, you might try Rescue Remedy. There's a non-alcohol version available for pets that doesn't contain alcohol and it has a calming effect.

That's a sizable drop at +2. How about getting a +3 test.

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219; +2=163

Hi guys .. well that flat yellow cycle from yesterday is looking pretty good for today! Nice drop into the blues by +2 .. I'm hoping you can get her sacs taken care of without sedation .. Stand firm, you are the paying customer! have a great day guys!

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219; +2=163

Thanks for the reassurance! We need it! I've been talking myself into a pleasant mood because I don't want to go in there with a cranky attitude. :-x

Sienne, I will look into the Rescue Remedy. I haven't heard of it, but I will certainly ask. It always comes down to her heart problems. :YMSIGH:

Her +3 is 105 and we're about to head off to the vets...so there goes any hope for greens in the AM cycle!!! haha!

We'll be back in an hour or so...I hope! ;-)

~Deborah

p.s. Oh, my other favorite comment from this morning's call from the vet's office:
them: "You haven't fed her, have you?"
me: "Yes, she ate breakfast."
them: "Oh, well, we really prefer her not to eat. So if there's any food down, if you'd take it up. Thanks."
me: "Ok." (while thinking...sure, let me give my diabetic cat her insulin injection and deny her food. Then maybe she'll go into a hypoglycemic state and she'd be so much easier to work with?!!!!)

Time to load up the beast! BYE!!!

Paws crossed for a good vetty visit. Sending calming vines to Shasta.

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219; +2=163; +3=105

 Well, that was...her ugliest vet visit to date!

This is what my cat looked like ->
This is what I looked like -> :YMSIGH:

To start with, we sat waiting for 30 minutes. I know things get backed up in any office, but when you know you have an anxious cat and then you make us sit for 30 minutes...be prepared. The vet did allow me to scruff her...not that it mattered. She was PISSED! Growling, hissing, twisting, etc. etc. Her anal sacs were difficult to empty...very thick and very hard, but the vet felt good about what she was able to do. Shasta is now resting on her couch. She's still pretty grumpy, but she did let me do an ear poke at +5.5 and it was 166.

My vet was asking how she was doing. I told her that I had changed her diet to wet food only (low carb, high protein) and that I had started home testing her BG. She was very impressed and asked if I had medical training...nurse of some sort? I laughed...music! She asked me about her numbers...what's the lowest Shasta has been. I told her 39 (even though I knew it was a bit lower) and she was VERY CONCERNED!

She told me to never let her get that low. In fact, I should never let her get below 50-60. She likes for cats to stay between 150-250. :?: :?: :?: :?:
I understand, that is a "safe" range where I can go to work/sleep/shopping/etc. and not worry...but isn't that still HIGH?!

She said that it may be that Shasta is going into remission and maybe I should be taking her off of insulin. She also thought that Shasta was still on 1.5u of Lantus. Tells you how much I keep her in the loop. At the end, she said it was nice meeting us, finally, in person (versus the few phone calls we have had.) Guess she forgot the other 2 times we have been in to see her...in person. :-|

Off to work in my classroom for a few hours...with no AC. Thanks for listening to me whine.

Re: 7/31 Shasta AMPS=239; +1=219; +2=163; +3=105; +5.5=166

Yup -- 150 - 250 is high. But, in fairness, most people don't home test so in order for the vet to keep the cat within a margin of safety, that's what they aim for. Your vet would probably tell you that you test too much (LOL -- my vet tells me that all the time. I tell her we will have to agree to disagree.) For a vet to hear a number below 50, they envision this going on for hours. You know how to manage the numbers with food so it's a matter of maybe 30 - 60 min. that your cat is in the lower ranges. The other way that vet's think is based on fructosamine results. The range on a fructosamine test is such that if your cat is in normal BG range (50 - 120), the results of the test would come back as "prolonged hypoglycemia."

BTW, Rescue Remedy is a plant extract. It's not a pharmaceutical. You might want to print out the info and run it past your vet but I think it should be safe.

I just kept laughing to myself, thinking that you all on FDMB have helped me SOOO much more and have been information savvy and supportive and wonderful! She's a nice lady, but it all just made me laugh. I think I've poked a hole in Shasta's left ear. I'm thinking about getting her a pair of earrings and let her be the blingiest cat in FL! :-D

I'll check out the Rescue Remedy after I grab a snack! Thanks again for the info and reassurance.

Poor Shasta! I'm sure she'll feel better for getting that gunk cleaned out. Her numbers are pretty good for all that extra stress. Maybe she burned off a little BG? That's what Zener's anal glands were like too so we had to start going more often. Looks like every 2 months for him. We feel the same way about LL. If we hadn't found this place, I'm pretty sure Zener wouldn't be alive, let alone thriving. It's amazing. I'm glad you've made the transition to trusting people here instead of the vet. There is just no way that any vet, even the most knowledgeable and best intentioned, could provide the assistance and information you get in LL, 24/7. Have you tried the Neosporin oinment with pain relief? That helped Zener's ears a lot. Plus we eventually tried the right ear and amazingly enough, it bled too!

Today's recap

+9=210

PMPS=306

She has slept most of the evening. Waking only to snack and get poked. She has received a few extra treats today (chicken) to help her get over the trauma that was anal sac emptying!

Liz - I'm not sure we can handle every 2 months. She might need it, but I think they'd start locking us out!!!!
I have found that I use her right ear one day, and her left ear the next!!!! Sometimes, though, I have to switch it up because she moves around too much! (not in a nasty way, just trying to decide how to lie down on my lap.)

Thank you all for your help, advice and friendliness! Shasta and I appreciate it! (well, Shasta may not appreciate the advice to poke her ear...but she'll get over it!) :-D

Wish us luck for tomorrow. My first day back to work... 11 hours away from my girl! I may have to try to sneak home at some point to check on her! Good night!

Deborah & the very sassy Shasta
