Yesterday, Pumbaa dropped to 94 at the +4 AM point, which I would have missed had I not been totally anal-retentive about testing him. The numbers we don't catch because we didn't test sometimes tell a huge story, and we can only speculate via later numbers about what actually occurred. Had I not tested him yesterday morning at +4, I would have wondered what drove him up to 301 at +7. And I wouldn't have realized that he bounced off the 94, then cleared that bounce in the same cycle. Way to go, Pumbaa!!!!!! *Smooch!*
Pumbaa's nadir has been all over the place lately. I don't know why. But it sure makes it hard to try and catch it. Like today...was his nadir really at +9? Or did he drop a lot after his +6 and the +9 was back on the rise?
And why did he go up at +3 today, and not just keep going up? Historically, anytime he's gone up at +3, his numbers haven't gone lower after that during the cycle. He's a total mystery to me.
Anyway, I did increase him to 2.25U this morning, from a Fat 2.00U. Not a drastic increase, but hopefully enough to nudge him into more blue and green numbers, without dives and tremendous bounces.
Unfortunately, the lower Pumbaa's numbers are, the better he feels. And that means he does everything in his power to avoid testing and shooting.
I find myself constantly having to outsmart him, and that's embarrassing!
Tonight, he refused to come anywhere near the kitchen during PMPS/food/injection time. I shook the Parmesan bottle and sprinkled some on his food. He just sat in the dining room, watching me, warily. I pretended to walk out of the kitchen to do something else, and he ran into my bedroom and hid under Beck's bed. I pulled the manual can opener out of the drawer and pretended like I was opening tuna. Pumbaa went into the hallway, but as soon as he saw me, he ran under Beck's bed again. I pulled out the big guns, and got out the bag of Stella & Chewy's, which caused civvie Larry to come running! I sprinkled some Stella & Chewy's on Larry's food and Pumbaa's food, and Pumbaa, once again, came into the hallway, but ran as soon as he saw me, and hid under Beck's bed once again. I think he flipped me the bird at this point!
"I'm more intelligent than this cat," I tried to convince myself! (So much for IQ test results from my younger years. These only compare you to other humans, not to cats or dogs. Useless tests! Hahahaha!)
I finally figured out that as long as I was in the kitchen, Pumbaa wasn't coming near me because it meant more poking. So, I went to the guest room to clean the litter box, and sure enough, as soon as Pumbaa heard me take the lid off of the litter box, he raced down the hallway for the kitchen. He had eaten a couple of bites of food before I caught him to test him, and had to quickly catch him again after putting away the testing supplies, and put him over his Stella & Chewy's enhanced food dish so that I could inject him. Hah! Proving once again that I can outsmart a cat. But it keeps getting harder! haha_smiley
To get serious once again, it bothers me that Pumbaa tries so hard to avoid injection time. He seldom flinches when I insert the needle, but frequently stops eating and flounces off once I have injected the Lantus. Then I have to try to catch him and entice him to eat more to offset the insulin. I used to rub the injection site after shooting him, but discovered that this was a big NO-NO (thanks to Chippendale's), and stopped this practice about a month ago. My routine for the shooting times is to fill the syringe, put the pen away, take out the food bowls and can of food, test Pumbaa, then fill the bowls and mix with water, and feed, allowing the Lantus time to warm up in the syringe before shooting Pumbaa. I know that some have poo-pooed that Lantus stings when injected other than in very large doses, but I know how Pumbaa reacts. This is one reason I would consider switching to Levemir.
Tonight might be interesting, considering Pumbaa has been in the blues for half of the day so far and his PMPS was 148. No dangerous green dives tonight, little guy, okay? You keep your numbers up in the blues and I won't poke you constantly. Deal?
