Good Afternoon all,

Last night got a pretty high number +5 = 387 and higher AMPS = 426
I think I’ve made a bad shot last evening or the insulin came right out after the injection.
Would you please tell me how to handle this situation?
Most of the time, when I've made an injection on Jessica’s side chest or flank areas, she tends to lay down on her side and sleep on the floor. Would that be possible that the insulin will squeeze right out from the injection site? How to prevent that from happening?
As the dosage becomes larger and larger, I’m worry some of the insulin get squeeze out inadvertently.
Thanks

The higher gauge the needle, the finer the puncture; if you're not using a 31 gauge needle, you might see if you do better with those.

The only times I've had issues with subcutaneous injections coming back out were in a setting of dehydration. In that case, it was sub-Q fluids and I gently pinched the skin together at the puncture site. The dehydration kept the skin from snapping back. Is Jessica at all dehydrated? Gently pull up the scruff and release; if it stays pulled up, she may be moderately dehydrated.

Thank you, BJM.

I'm using BD Ultra Fine 31G needle, length 8mm.
I re-use Drinkwell Platinum Fountain and she quite happy to drink from the fountain, although she sometime like to drink from the faucet.
I pulled her scruff and it returns to her original position. So, dehydration is not the issue.
Now, I try to keep her on upright position at least for a few minutes so as to let the puncture to seal.

Sometimes when I injected, I would rub his fur afterwards and my hand would smell like new band aids (the same smell as the insulin). His fur would be dry, but still smell. Not sure why. I am still pretty new to this, so I don't have any real answers, but wanted to let you know I feel your pain. Everytime this happened to me I was stressed all day worrying I hadn't gotten the correct dosage in. I know you should never give more, even if you think it didn't all go in.

I actually get B12 shots weekly and sometimes a little drop comes out afterwards. Maybe it's the same with the insulin?

be sure not to rub the injection area (ever!) ...depress plunger slowly and make sure you didn't go all the way through the skin....and put light pressure on injection area for about 10 seconds after you give her the shot :-D

Hi Mary,
Yes, It really painful to the BG up and down. I also give Jessica B12 injection each (25U). Since the volume is quite large, I usually choose the scruff area and hope it won't come out.
As Kat mentioned, don't rub on the injection area.

Hi Kat,

If I put light pressure on injection area about 10 seconds after I give the shot, Would that be a chance that the insulin being squeezed out?

Thanks

I'm not sure Frankie. Let me ask one of my fellow members to take a look at your question, and ask them to post their opinion...

I don't think the insulin is being squeezed out when she lays down.
If you are worried about it, you could try a longer needle. I use the 1/2" needles because J.D. is a bigger cat and I want to get the insulin under the skin which has layers of fat on it. I think I am saying this correctly. I just inject, and then hold the syringe there with the plunger depressed for a full second before taking the needle out.
