7/30 Alex AMPS 440 ,+4-249

Sigh...last night Alex had a PS of 246 which was really unusual for him(good unusual), but of course it was followed by early drops. He was in the green by +4 which meant I had to start giving him MC food to keep him from crashing while I was sleeping because I shoot at midnight. This is probably responsible for his high number now. Or at least partially responsible. I'm still not sure if he feels so great either. He's really got a good appetite but he always sits in a not quite 'meatloaf' position. By that, I mean his front paws are out in front of him like "The Sphinx"...but he's done that for a long time. So I don't know if it's an ongoing thing from his little kidney stone or what? When I've given him bupe for a couple of days to see if he's in pain, it hasn't really made any difference as far as his numbers go (or his personality to tell the truth). He may feel okay and it might just be me projecting.... :?

So, now I'm wondering if maybe it would help him if I got him back on a more normal shooting schedule. This schedule is great for me now...but I'm wondering if maybe the weird times and my having to MC and HC him because I need to sleep are affecting his ps numbers? Does this sound at all plausible? I've heard that with Lantus and Levemir, when a cat eats has nothing to do with the numbers, but maybe with Alex it does? And maybe I'm 'grasping' but I'm just so sick of these red ps numbers.... :YMSIGH:

Aside from that, Alex seems to be okay. Aside from ALL OF THAT ( ). All p's are basically in order and the little man is getting ready to take a snooze after his AM? shot and snack.

Happy Friday everyone

Re: 7/30 Alex AMPS 440 OUCH

no advice here just a hug for you and Alex. I hope his #'s improve. Maybe put advice in your subject line to get more experienced eyes on it.

Re: 7/30 Alex AMPS 440 OUCH

I have only ever fed twice a day, which was at shot time when Max was getting insulin...so I can't help you on that one. But I would think that moving his shot time to a point that is at least a few hours before you normally go to sleep would be good. I had Max on a 6:15am/pm schedule because of work, but it helped in the evenings because I was usually up for at least 3 hours after his shot, sometimes 4. If I needed to, I could stay up a little later to see that some LC brought him up to a safe zone if he had dropped too low. And then I could sleep easy the rest of the night (what I'd have left anyway) without worrying. On the other hand, I was frequently up at night with my son at that point too, so if I needed to check him again later, I'd be up to do it without setting an alarm.

Really tho, only you know your daily schedule and your sleep habits/needs...

Here's a wondering out loud sort of thing...when he drops into the greens, he usually bounces, right? But you don't know if it is from the MC/HC food, or just because of a panicky liver. So, what about trying just giving him some Karo when he goes green, and not giving food? The Karo is supposed to get into the system faster, and pass out faster, right? So in theory, that wouldn't cause him to have a bounce at the next ps...maybe? If it brings his numbers up faster, maybe his liver won't notice so much and panic so hard? And if it passes out faster, then it shouldn't be affecting his next ps reading. Or I could totally be barking up a tree on that one. It's just a thought.

And Max does the "Sphinx" thing too, but he's definitely feeling fine. Usually he has his head up and is staring at me or watching activity in the room when he does it. What exactly is 'meatloafing'?

Gut-level reaction? Yeah, regular is better. But ask someone who knows something!

Just wanted to say hi.

You mean feeding and shooting together? That kind of regular? The way I do it now, I feed Alex and then shoot like 3 hours later. Yeah I'm gonna talk about getting back to a "more" normal schedule...

Hi Kathy, how are ya'?

Thanks, Mindy!

No Actually Karo will spike him up very much higher and make him bounce harder. I try to avoid it if I can. It would be best if I could just see where he would go without giving anything other than LC when he's at 60, but like I said...I'm afraid he'll crash when I'm asleep.

'Meatloafing' is sitting like a sphinx but with all paws underneath so that kitty looks like a little meatloaf ;-)

Thanks for your response and concern and hope you had a great weekend...I'm sure that you won't see this until Monday.

I think it would help if you can shoot at a time when you can be awake for several hours after the shot. If you keep fighting against your normal sleep schedule you'll just get more and more tired. It might be easier for you to feed the early part of the curve too, to help prevent those big drops. JMHO.

I think so too. If I was benefitting from this schedule it would be one thing, but all I'm doing is becoming sleep deprived and screwing up my kitty:(
