Fluffy anymore is very annoyed at getting a shot. At first I thought it was the longer needles that he was protesting. I switched to the very short needle and he still protesting. Growling and wanting to bite me. He doesn't bite hard just enough to know he's not happy. In addition, he has been pouncing on some of the other cats! That's not like him! He's a gentle boy! Why is this happening????

My SS is currently updated. However, I will be super busy today with planning funeral arrangements and all that entails these events. I will do my best to keep posting but I will be where there is no internet service. And cell service is very spotty.

I am not really sure why. Either Fluffy is not feeling well in general or something else is going. Don't get upset at me for asking, but is Fluffy on any other medications, including appetite stimulants? He doesn't, right? (Pretty sure but thought I would ask.) Are there any other strange cats around that are outside your house that Fluffy has seen/can see? Is he eating normally, using the litter box normally, etc.? Any changes that you've noticed there? Now, as to the insulin, Lantus can sting, but we don't usually see cats react to it until they get into higher doses. It's possible he is sensitive to the insulin. I'm not sure this accounts for pouncing on other cats though. Usually they just flinch when the shots are given. I'm just throwing possibilities out there. @tiffmaxee do you have any additional thoughts on this?

I had that same problem with Ti-Mousse when I started with Lantus in 2019. He is a very gentle cat and he was hiding, biting and growling at every shot time. Lantus can sting at higher doses and Ti-Mousse was only on 3u but I guess some cats may be more sensitive than others and feel the sting sooner. After two weeks on Lantus, I decided to try Levemir. As soon as I switched no more problems; he was a little scared at the beginning but when he realized it was not hurting anymore, Ti-Mousse was my happy kitty again and he never complained after at shot time!!

Maybe Lantus is hurting Fluffy!

Lantus seems to sting for some cats, usually high doses but I guess it could happen in any dose. You might want to try Levemir instead which is also a depot insulin and doesn’t sting. Some cats even do better on it although I am not sure why.
I just read the above so maybe I am on to something.

This is what I am thinking too, Scarlette, which is why I suggested it, but wanted some others experience as well. My cat was on over 40 units of Lantus and never reacted — we later switched to Levemir, which I loved — but every cat is different!

I hesitated to even mention this because I know that you received the Lantus from DCIN. If you explain what’s going on with Fluffy, do you think they will be willing to help you out with it? @Chris & China (GA) I am sorry, Scarlette, that this has been happening with Fluffy.

Thank you everybody for your thoughts, so let me respond to the questions. Fluffy is currently not on any medication other than Lantus and since he is getting 3.75U, maybe this is why he's behaving as mentioned above because of the high dose.

As far as the Levemir goes, that is the insulin of my choice but the vet would not write me a prescription for Levemir stating that it was discontinued in 2014. As far as DCIN goes they approve Levemir and they would provide Levemir if I had a prescription but I do not have the funds to go to a new vet [vet #3] to get the Levemir prescription and that is if they would even give it to me.

I have already seen two vets since Fluffy's diagnosis and the second vet would not even give me a prescription for anything but Vetsulin and DCIN does not cover vetsulin.

Levemir has not been discontinued. Plenty of people are using it here. That’s actually not a high dose. We have cats on 20 units and beyond. Vetsulin is for dogs and no longer recommended for cats. You can research this and will see.

I know, Scarlette, I am sorry. Levemir, of course, has not been discontinued. We have many members currently using Levemir. I used it myself in 2021.

Can't believe your vet is not more informed! Levemir was not discontinued in 2014, it is the FlexPen which was discontinued and replaced by the FlexTouch...! https://www.empr.com/home/news/leve...inuation,additional product will be available.
Here is an article comparing both Lantus and Levemir and it mentions "stinging". http://www.diabetesclinic.ca/en/diab/2treat/lantus_vs_levemir.htm
I really hope your vet will change his mind and give you a prescription for your little Fluffy! :bighug:
